DNR collects 300 dead wild birds, suspects avian flu infection as cause of death

13 February 2025 at 20:06

More than 300 dead wild birds have been discovered in five Michigan counties, including Allegan, Shiawasee, Ingham, Eaton and Washtenaw.

Mark Mills, southwest region manager of the wildlife division for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, says the recent cold snap froze lakes  — which forced waterfowl to gather in larger numbers where there is open water.

“When you concentrate wildlife just like when you concentrate people in a smaller area you see a greater level of disease transmission typically so I think it’s really connected to these birds being clumped up together.”

DNR staff have been collecting the dead birds — mostly Canada geese — for testing of highly pathogenic avian influenza, easily spread and often fatal in birds.

Mills says the DNR doesn’t expect serious impacts to Michigan’s duck, goose or swan populations statewide, although concentrated areas may see more die-off, like the 1,500-acre refuge at the Fennville Farm Unit in the Allegan State Game Area.

“The unit collected 70-something carcasses, and we estimate there’s over 6,000 birds there right now, so we’re talking a very low percentage of the geese that are present even at that one location.”

He asks anyone who finds six or more dead birds in one location to please report it to the DNR via the agency’s website or by calling the Wildlife Disease Laboratory at 517-336-5030.

Detroit drug initiative to combat violence, overdoses coming to Muskegon

27 December 2024 at 13:00

A federal program called Operation Overdrive used to combat drug-related violence and overdoses in Detroit is now coming to Muskegon.

The Drug Enforcement Administration uses crime statistics and health data to identify hot spots of drug-related violence and overdose deaths in order to devote law enforcement resources where they will have the most impact: communities where criminal networks are causing the most harm.

“What the data did reveal is that second to Detroit per capita is Muskegon, where you have these overdose deaths and this gun violence,” said, Officer Brian McNeal, public information officer for the DEA’s Detroit Field Division, which is bringing Operation Overdrive Phase III to Muskegon.

“The DEA’s primary mission when you boil it all down and remove all the fancy terminology is to keep people safe, and this is just another tool,” he added.

The original Operation Overdrive launched in 2022 included Detroit and Flint, partnering local law enforcement with federal resources.

“We work with them to identify who are the bad actors, what are the neighborhoods in your city or region,” McNeal said. “You’re the boots on the ground so you’re seeing those things.”

McNeal says Operation Overdrive has helped arrest major drug players in multiple states and gotten illegal guns off the streets used in crimes ranging from robbery to murder.

The project also highlights outreach and awareness initiatives to combat drug overdoses and poisonings in the community.

26 December 2024 at 14:00

A new professional men’s soccer team in Grand Rapids will be part of Major League Soccer NEXT Pro, team owners announced this month.

No team name, colors or logo have been revealed yet for the West Michigan Soccer team, but co-owner Dave Van Andel announced its competition league.

“We want to announce that Grand Rapids will have its own professional men’s soccer team in the MLS NEXT Pro.”

The West Michigan Soccer team co-owned by the Van Andel and Devos families will play its home games at that 8,500-seat Amway Stadium on Winter Ave. NW in Grand Rapids near the downtown YMCA, with construction starting next year.

MLS NEXT Pro is a men’s professional soccer league in the U.S. and Canada launched in 2022 now in its third season with 29 teams and growing.

Its president, Charles Altchek, says the league is building toward the future, focused on professional development of talent from players and coaches to business and sports leaders to the cities the clubs play in.

“Here in Grand Rapids, we are seeing this in action with the next generation of Van Andels and Devoses leading this team. Jesse, Aaron, Kyle and Christian Van Andel and Cole Devos, we look forward to working with you to build a world-class professional soccer club.”

Christian Van Andel added, now that the league is in place, it’s time to start meeting with local clubs, coaches, and players to grow excitement.

“Our goal is to begin building a following starting today so that at our first match, we have a packed Amway Stadium.”

The team is set to play that first match in the 2027 season.

23 December 2024 at 11:00

A Kent County Sheriff’s deputy is accused of stealing personal property inside the county jail.

Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker issued charges of larceny in a building last week against sheriff’s deputy Saul Sepulveda.

A media release from the Sheriff’s Office states an investigation began after reports money was missing from a wallet in the lost-and-found at the Kent County Correctional Facility.

The investigation revealed a corrections officer had taken money and gift cards from the wallet, and the case was turned over to the Prosecutor’s Office.

The release stated: “This behavior will not be tolerated at the Kent County Sheriff’s Office. The KCSO members remain dedicated to serving and protecting the residents of Kent County with integrity.”

Larceny in a building is a felony, punishable by a maximum of four years and a $5,000 fine.

Sepulveda is set to be arraigned on the charges in court Monday in Grand Rapids.
