The Progressive Underground Pick of the Week: ‘The Package’ by De La Soul

15 December 2025 at 14:31

This week we are rocking with the legendary De La Soul, who just dropped a new album called “Cabin In The Sky.” It is part of Mass Appeal’s Legend Has It series, which links up classic rap crews with new projects for a new era.

De La steps back into the spotlight missing a core voice. Trugoy the Dove, also known as Dave, passed two years ago, but he is here posthumously alongside Pos and Mase, trading verses with a who’s who from progressive hip hop and beyond: Nas, Killer Mike, Black Thought, Q-Tip, Yukimi from Little Dragon and more, with production from heavyweights like Pete Rock and DJ Premier.

The cut we are about to get into is classic De La: laid-back, witty, conversational and groove-centered. Here is De La Soul with “The Package” off “Cabin In The Sky” and it is my Pick of the Week.

That was “The Package” from De La Soul, the lead single from their new album “Cabin In The Sky.”

If progressive hip hop like this moves you, lock in with The Progressive Underground every Saturday at 6 p.m. on 101.9 WDET and online at wdet.org.

The Progressive Underground Pick of the Week: ‘Disarray’ by Lianne La Havas

8 December 2025 at 14:27

This week we are locking in with UK singer, songwriter and guitarist Lianne La Havas, who has carved out her own lane in alternative soul and folk, drawing on influences that range from Nina Simone to Lauryn Hill.

She first turned heads in the early 2010s with a mostly acoustic, intimate blend of folk and soul. Now she returns after a five year break with a single that puts everything back in focus. This track is built on sparse, airy guitar and that unmistakable voice, delivering emotional weight without a lot of extra production. It is stripped down, honest and vulnerable in a way that feels almost conversational.

Here is Lianne La Havas with “Disarray” and it is my Pick of the Week.

That was Lianne La Havas with “Disarray,” her first new material in five years and an early signal of what is coming on her next album.

If you are into raw, acoustic soul like this, tune in to The Progressive Underground every Saturday at 6 p.m. on 101.9 WDET and online at wdet.org

The Progressive Underground Pick of the Week: ‘Ladida’ by Rochelle Jordan

1 December 2025 at 23:04

This week we tap in with British-Canadian vocalist and songwriter Rochelle Jordan, who has been quietly carving out her own lane as one of electronic music’s most distinctive voices. She just dropped her third album, the sleek and sophisticated “Through The Wall,” a 17-track ride that moves through deep house, future soul, rhythmic R&B and hazy dream-pop textures.

Across the record she gives a masterclass in restraint. She does not belt; she glides, letting breath, phrasing and tone do the heavy lifting. That approach is on full display on the cut we are about to get into.

Here is Rochelle Jordan with “Ladida” from “Through The Wall” – our Pick of the Week.

That was Rochelle Jordan with “Ladida,” taken from her latest full-length, “Through The Wall.”

If you are into lush, melodic electronic grooves like this, lock in with The Progressive Underground every Saturday at 6 p.m. on 101.9 WDET and online at wdet.org.

Thanks for listening, and we’ll catch you next time.

The Progressive Underground Pick of the Week: ‘take it’ by keiyaA

24 November 2025 at 16:44

What’s up, Detroit. Chris Campbell here with The Progressive Underground Pick of the Week. This one comes from Chicago native now Brooklyn-based artist keiyaA, who broke through with her 2020 debut “Forever, Ya Girl.”

She returns five years later with a widescreen sophomore statement, the 19-track “hooke’s law,” an immersive blend of future soul, jazz, and psychedelia. The cut we’re about to bump captures the album’s off-center groove design with dizzy drum patterns, sly beat switches, and elastic time.

Here’s keiyaA with “take it,” and it’s my Pick of the Week.

That was keiyaA with “take it,” from her new album “hooke’s law.”

If future soul and psychedelic textures hit your ear, lock in every Saturday evening at 6 p.m. for The Progressive Underground. We move through soul, nu-jazz, deep house, electronica, B-sides, and rare groove with a Detroit-centered, global lens.

The Progressive Underground Pick of the Week: ‘All Over Me’ by Yukimi

17 November 2025 at 16:07

Hey, what’s going on, Detroit. Chris Campbell here with The Progressive Underground Pick of the Week. This week’s feature comes from Swedish vocalist Yukimi, best known as the frontwoman and creative engine of the Gothenberg-based band Little Dragon.

Fresh off her solo debut “For You,” Yukimi follows up with a new EP titled “Yume,” which means dream in Japanese. It’s a genre-bending collection weaving together jazz, soul, electronic pop, hip hop, roots, and psychedelia across four immersive tracks.

We’re tuning into one of its standouts, a song that moves through love, loss, and renewal. Here’s Yukimi with “All Over Me,” and it’s my Pick of the Week.

That was Yukimi with “All Over Me,” from her recently released EP “Yume,” out now on Ninja Tune Records.

If you’re drawn to the deeper shades of acoustic soul and left-of-center sound, join us every Saturday evening at 6 p.m. for The Progressive Underground. We explore soul, nu-jazz, deep house, electronica, B-sides, and rare groove through a Detroit-centered, global lens.

The Progressive Underground Pick of the Week: ‘You Are’ by Jimpster

10 November 2025 at 21:48

What’s up, Detroit. Chris Campbell here with The Progressive Underground Pick of the Week.

This one comes from British electronic mainstay Jimpster, known offstage as Jamie Odell. He grew up in a musical household. His father is Roger Odell, the drummer from jazz-funk outfit Shakatak, and those early sessions around synths and tape machines set Jamie on his path.

Jimpster became a keys-first producer who could move a crowd and a studio with equal skill. He co-founded Freerange Records, carved a lane in deep house, and kept stretching into nu-jazz, ambient, and left-field electronica. The live-band approach in his sets gave the music extra lift and helped make him a go-to remixer for names like Coldcut, Kirk Degiorgio, Lamb, and Airto Moreira.

We dive back into his breakthrough album, “Messages from the Hub” with the cut “You Are.” Lush pads, a patient groove, and a melody that sneaks up on you makes it my Pick of the Week.

Catch Jimpster performing live alongside Detroit’s Sillygirlcarmen and Bruce Bailey on Saturday, Nov. 15 at the TV Lounge.

If ethereal electronica and nu-jazz hit your sweet spot, lock in every Saturday at 6 p.m. on 101.9 WDET and at wdet.org. We take a full-spectrum trip through electronica, nu-jazz, deep house, nu-funk, B-sides, and rare grooves.

The Progressive Underground Pick of the Week: ‘The Deal’ by St. Panther

6 November 2025 at 16:55

Hey Detroit, Chris Campbell here from the Progressive Underground dropping in for our Pick of the Week.

For this week’s pick, we spotlight Mexican and Colombian artist, producer, singer, rapper, and multi-instrumentalist Dani Bojorges-Giraldo, otherwise known as St. Panther.

Based in Los Angeles, they glide between soul, R&B, jazz, hip-hop, and alt-pop. The forthcoming album is “Strange World,” due any day now. For this single, the influence is clear and intentional, channeling D’Angelo’s “Untitled (How Does It Feel)” into a modern torch song that smolders and slow burns musically.

So let’s check it out, here’s St. Panther with “The Deal,” and it’s my Pick of the Week.

That was St. Panther with “The Deal,” from the upcoming album “Strange World.”

If that pocket pulled you in, lock in with us every Saturday evening at 6 p.m. on 101.9 WDET for The Progressive Underground. We dive into future soul, nu-jazz, B-sides, and deep grooves from across the musical spectrum.

The Progressive Underground Pick of the Week: ‘KTYWS’ by SAULT

16 July 2025 at 16:49

Chris Campbell here with The Progressive Underground, bringing you this week’s Pick of the Week — and let me tell you, this one is spiritual electricity.

We’re tapping into the genre-defying brilliance of SAULT, the elusive UK collective led by producer Inflo and powerhouse vocalist Cleo Sol — who also happen to be husband and wife. Since bursting onto the scene in 2019, SAULT has released a staggering 11 albums in just a few short years, each one digging deeper into the soul of Black music and culture with a defiant edge and minimal media presence. No press tours. No interviews. Just message and music.

This year, they hit us with their 12th studio release, simply titled “10.” And true to form, it’s a kaleidoscopic ride — an audacious fusion of R&B, punk, gospel, funk, soul, rock, and pop, delivered in SAULT’s signature raw-yet-refined aesthetic.

The track we’re about to get into is called “KTYWS,” an acronym for “Know That You Will Survive.” And it’s exactly what it sounds like — a sonic affirmation. This one rides a thick groove with gritty basslines, layered vocals, and a rebellious spirit that hits somewhere between a sermon and a rallying cry. It’s healing music. It’s resistance music. It’s survival music.

Let’s get into it, SAULT with “KTYWS,” my Pick of the Week.

That was SAULT with “KTYWS,” a defiant, groove-laced proclamation from a group that refuses to play by the industry’s rules. No names in lights, no faces on magazine covers, just deep, soul-drenched music that hits where it matters.

If that moved you like it moved me, then lock in with The Progressive Underground every Saturday night at 6 p.m. on 101.9 WDET. We dig for the bold, the brilliant, and the next wave of future classics, from nu-jazz to deep house, b-sides to broken beat.

For The Progressive Underground, I’m Chris Campbell. Stay elevated, and we’ll catch you next time.

The Progressive Underground Pick of the Week: ‘20/20’ by Ideeyah

7 July 2025 at 16:19

This is Chris Campbell from The Progressive Underground with your Pick of the Week. And trust me, this one hits deep.

This week, we spotlight Detroit’s own Ideeyah, whose latest EP on Theo Parrish’s Sound Signature label is nothing short of a spiritual sonic experience.

Produced by rising star Meftah, the project marks a bold evolution in Ideeyah’s artistry — blending ethereal vocals, spoken word reflections, and lush, transcendent production that feels like praise and meditation all in one.

One of the standout tracks is called “20/20,” a soulful, introspective groove that moves the body and stirs the spirit, and it’s my Pick of the Week.

That was Ideeyah with “20/20” off her new EP, Sweet Chariot.

If this resonated with you, pull up every Saturday at 6 p.m. for The Progressive Underground, where we explore the future of soul, nu-jazz, b-sides, and deep grooves from across the spectrum.

The Progressive Underground Pick of the Week: ‘1AM (Extended Groove Mix)’ by SiloamPool

1 July 2025 at 16:03

This is Chris Campbell from The Progressive Underground, and it’s time for my Pick of the Week.

Now this one right here? It’s for the ballroom crowd, the steppers, the late-night soul seekers. We’re diving into “1AM (Extended Groove Mix)” from Detroit’s own SiloamPool, a singer-songwriter with a voice as smooth as silk and a pen dipped in jazz and R&B.

Raised on a musical diet of Nina Simone, Earth, Wind & Fire, Al Jarreau, Dee Dee Bridgewater, and Gino Vannelli, Siloam once had plans to wear a white coat in the medical field. But after taking a few music theory and vocal courses at the University of Michigan, she caught the bug, and the stage called her name.

After a stint on the road with gospel and R&B legend Fred Hammond, she stepped out solo and hasn’t looked back. Her latest single, co-written with Markovich Drummond and produced by Sidney Howard of Mama, There Goes That Band! fame, is a lush, late-night groove layered with a slow-burn intro and vocals that slide in like velvet.

It’s sensual. It’s soulful. It’s midnight magic turned all the way up.
Let’s get into it. This is Siloam Pool with “1AM (Extended Groove Mix),”  my Pick of the Week.

That was SiloamPool with “1AM (Extended Groove Mix)” — a smooth-as-satin cut built for those moonlit dance floors and backroom lounges.

If you love groove-heavy joints like this, catch me every Saturday evening at 6 p.m. on The Progressive Underground, where we bump future soul, nu-jazz, b-sides and rare grooves.

For The Progressive Underground, I’m Chris Campbell.  Stay soulful and uplifted and we’ll see you next time.
