In The Groove: Detroiters will forever miss the voice & rhythm of Frankie Beverly

11 September 2024 at 20:55

Yet again giving our flowers to a talent we lost, a major one for Detroit, because I can’t think of an artist who wasn’t from here that was so beloved, adopted and adored by the Motor City.

Yes, I’m talking about Frankie Beverly, who died Tuesday at the age of 77. It was Marvin Gaye who took Beverly under his wing and helped him sign a deal with Capitol Records in 1977. I played some of that early material when it was Frankie Beverly’s Raw Soul (of course it became Frankie Beverly & Maze, which was Marvin Gaye’s suggestion). A true giant, who provided the ultimate summer soundtrack to cruising on Jefferson Avenue and a whole bunch of Belle Isle bangers. Rest in rhythm forever, Frankie!

On top of that, I continue my obsession with Tall Black Guy and his wonderful world of edits, new music from Bilal, Buddy, Demuja and more.

Check the playlist below and listen to the episode for two weeks after it airs using the player above.

In The Groove: Ezra Collective, Claude Fontaine + a fond farewell for Sergio Mendes and Herbie Flowers

9 September 2024 at 20:55

Today it’s first-time spins from Porridge Radio, Claude Fontaine, Supergrass, Special Interest, RAH & the Ruffcats, plus a special spotlight on Ezra Collective.

I also give a fond farewell for the man responsible with helping to bring Brazilian rhythms to America — the one and only Sergio Mendes — as well as an ultimate secret weapon on the bass, Herbie Flowers, who played on more than 500 hit records in his lifetime. Massive losses for the music community, but two figures that left everything they had on the stage and on the record. Rest in rhythm to Sergio and Herbie.

In The Groove: Panda Bear and Bullion are a beautiful pairing, Antibalas grabs your attention

5 September 2024 at 21:53

Thank you to everyone that called the station to say they love Antibalas as much as me. They are true Afrobeat kings keeping the spirit of Fela Kuti and Tony Allen alive.

A random thread of today’s show is Panda Bear of Animal Collective and his many gigs lending a voice to other peoples projects like Sonic Boom and Bullion, who released the excellent album Affection earlier this year on Michigan-grown label Ghostly International. In The Groove: Kasan Belgrave performs live on WDET ahead of 2024 Detroit Jazz Festival

28 August 2024 at 21:34

Gearing up for 2024 Detroit Jazz Fest — my favorite festival in all of Detroit — with a live in-studio performance from saxophonist Kasan Belgrave and his band (Michael Abbo on bass, Jordan Anderson on piano, Kaleb Robinson on drums). Kasan is the son of Marcus Belgrave, one of the most iconic jazz musicians and educators to come out of Detroit and an internationally recognized talent.

There’s some really powerful legacy there for sure, but Kasan is stepping out and doing his own thing on his debut album, Dual Citizen, due out later this year. During his session on In The Groove, he performed two songs from the upcoming record. Kasan’s session was absolutely incredible — I’m still buzzing from it!

You can experience it for yourself when Kasan and his band will perform on Monday at 2 p.m. ET on the Carhartt Stage at the Detroit Jazz Festival. Check out the full schedule here.

In The Groove: New ways to listen to old Prince, a spotlight on Rich Ruth + new music from Loma

26 August 2024 at 20:18

When I say a “new way to listen to old Prince,” I mean these are technically edits made by producers and deejays who didn’t have permission to remix the song. But hey, they sound great! And the art of the remix is a real thing that we must respect.

On top of that, a celebration of Chicago house music icon Frankie Knuckles. I noticed that the city of Chicago honored him with his own day. Made me wonder if we should do that with some of our local legends? Waajeed Day? K-Hand Day? Carl Craig Day? J Dilla Day? If these days do already exist, please send me a note and correct me.

Plus new music from Rich Ruth — who put on an insanely good show at Third Man Records here in the Cass Corridor over the weekend — Nilüfer Yanya, Cornelius, Loma and more.

Check the playlist below and listen to the episode for two weeks after it airs using the player above.

In The Groove: Portishead and their game-changing ‘Dummy’ debut album 30 years later

22 August 2024 at 22:28

It’s the type of show I dream of doing — the celebration of an album that has meant so much to me over the years and its 30th anniversary.

This time, it’s all about the trip hop classic Dummy by Portishead, released on this very day back in 1994. The otherworldly voice of Beth Gibbons (who has some of her solo work played on the show today, too), the production duo of Adrian Utley and Geoff Barrow (his new Beak> album gets a spin, too).

It’s like down tempo lightning in a bottle.

I bought this CD blind when I was still in high school at a now-closed record store in Royal Oak called Wendell’s. The cover sucked me. I took it home, turned it up and my world was forever changed.

Portishead Dummy
Portishead’s debut studio album ‘Dummy,’ released in August 1994.

And I said that on air today — “anyone hearing this for the first time? Is it changing your life like it did mine?” And I got an email from Josh in Sarnia, Ontario who wrote in, “This is the first time I’ve heard Portishead! Gorgeous.”

That made my whole damn week. Thank you for listening and enjoying one of my favorite albums with me!

There’s some other trip-hop building blocks in the playlist today including Massive Attack, Tranquility Bass and, I’d argue, you can hear the influence on Digable Planets’ “Black Ego,” too (they’ll be in town this week with the Roots). Plus new stuff from SAHRA, Astrid Sonne, Adrianne Lenker and more.

Check the playlist below and listen to the episode for two weeks after it airs using the player above.
