In The Groove: Resavoir finds the space between genres in latest album ‘Themes for Dreams’

3 April 2026 at 18:40

Chicago-based artist Will Miller aka Resavoir  joined In The Groove to talk about his evolving sound and recent work, including his 2023 album “Horizon.” The project, created with guitarist Matt Gold, grew out of years of friendship and a shared love of Brazilian music, drawing inspiration from artists like Luiz Bonfá and Milton Nascimento. The record also features guitarist Mei Semones, whose distinctive style adds another layer to the album’s acoustic textures.

Before stepping into his solo work, Miller spent much of his 20s touring and recording with the band Whitney, contributing to ttheir sound across multiple releases. Now, with his latest album “Themes for Dreams,” he’s embracing a more genre-less approach. “That’s sort of musical terrain that I’ve always been interested in occupying,” Miller says, “just taking the inspiration as it comes and not trying to box it into any one thing.” While often labeled jazz, the record leans into something more atmospheric, echoing Brian Eno.

That approach carries into the concept behind “Themes for Dreams,” which was inspired by the idea of music designed to aid sleep and guide listeners into a dreamlike state, similar to Glenn Gould’s interpretations of Bach’s “Goldberg Variations.” “It’s meant to sort of guide you into the nether world of dreaming,” Miller explains, embracing both active and passive listening experiences.

The Technicolors talk new music, creative process, and Michigan roots

20 March 2026 at 19:25

With their latest release, “Heavy Pulp,” The Technicolors add grit to the sweetness, giving their sound weight, texture, and something to hold onto.

Electric guitars drift in and out of focus, anchored by steady rhythms and tension that keep each track from settling too comfortably. Frontman Brennan Smiley’s vocals balance restraint and release, while the production feels both polished and intentionally worn in. From start to finish, the record is full of substance beneath the surface, revealing new layers with each listen.

Phoenix indie rock band The Technicolors joined In The Groove to talk about their latest record, their evolving creative process, and their connection to Michigan ahead of their upcoming show.

Smiley says “Heavy Pulp” was built on collaboration and focus. “It was good to have a set amount of time where we could all be together… just get in the studio and be a band,” he said. That approach marked a shift from their previous album, which he called “a pandemic Frankenstein,” pieced together across different sessions and circumstances.

This time around, the band leaned into being fully present. From implementing a “no phone in the studio” mindset to avoiding direct musical references during writing, their process was intentionally stripped back. “It just changes the level of presence,” Smiley explained. “You get more ideas, that’s what you’re there to do.”

That sense of experimentation also came from looking beyond traditional influences. Instead of drawing directly from other artists, Smiley found inspiration in unexpected places. “I actually wasn’t really listening to a ton of music. I was really into Radiolab podcasts, they feel like little movies with just sound,” he said, pointing to the band’s ongoing interest in cinematic textures and atmosphere.

Still, the foundation of The Technicolors’ sound can be traced back to classic influences. Smiley cited Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and The Beatles as formative artists, adding, “That was kind of my teenage guitar-player starter pack.” He also highlighted The Dark Side of the Moon as a lasting inspiration: “It’s still maybe my all-time favorite album; it just kept on giving.”

With family ties to the Detroit area and a long-awaited return to Michigan, the band is especially excited to reconnect with audiences. “It’s been a minute since we’ve played in Michigan… we’re excited to come back,” Smiley said. The Technicolors will be performing at The Blind Pig in Ann Arbor on March 20

In The Groove: Steve Okonski on his new track ‘Easy’ and making jazz approachable

4 March 2026 at 18:56

Performer and pianist Steve Okonski joined In The Groove to talk about the improvisation, groove, and approachability that define his trio’s music.

Okonski first gained attention as the pianist for Durand Jones & the Indications before launching his own project, “Entrance Music” last year on Colemine Records. The album was recorded spontaneously with Aaron Frazer on drums, Michael “Ish” Montgomery on bass, and Terry Cole producing. “We’d come in with no ideas and just play… Out of that half-hour of music that became the album, I sifted through hours of recordings to make it,” Okonski explains.

His newest track, “Easy,” mixes that same improvisation with modern sound. “You can hear the flow and motifs from 90s hip hop and instrumental music,” Okonski says, “but it also has this jazz sensibility—it’s accessible and something anyone can get into.”

Okonski sees his music as a gentle introduction to jazz for listeners new and old. “People tell me they don’t like jazz, but when they hear our albums or “Easy,” they really connect. It’s a way for people to start exploring jazz on their own,” he says. Tracks like “October,” the opener from “Entrance Music,” capture the trio’s sound, emotional without being heavy. In Okonski’s words, “Music can be gentle without being weak. The music speaks for itself.”

In The Groove: Bridget Everett on music, joy and bringing her wild show to Detroit

28 February 2026 at 02:17

Performer and comedian Bridget Everett joined In The Groove ahead of her Detroit appearance to talk about the music, freedom and emotional release that define her genre-blurring live shows.

Everett says Detroit audiences have always stood out to her, even if she can’t quite explain why. “You can’t really put your finger on it,” she says. “I walked away feeling really loved and loving it.” That sense of connection, she explains, is what she hopes audiences feel during her performances, a chance to let go and have fun together.

On Monday, Everett brings her live show to The Fillmore Detroit for a one-night performance.

Everett first built her reputation performing in New York’s underground cabaret scene before expanding her audience on tour with comedian Amy Schumer, who encouraged her to bring her boundary-pushing performances to new cities. Everett describes her show as a mix of rock concerts, cabaret and stand-up comedy, driven by unpredictability and inviting audiences to let loose. “Being flexible with what people expect a performer to do is thrilling,” she says, adding that the goal is to create a space where audiences can simply have fun.

Music has always been central to her work. Performing songs like Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run,” she says, “there’s a different feeling when you are singing a song and living inside of it,” describing the unexpected sense of freedom she found performing it live. Growing up in Kansas, discovering artists like Joan Jett helped shape the fearless energy she brings to the stage today.

Her current tour balances chaos with quieter moments, including a performance of Elton John’s “Someone Saved My Life Tonight,” which serves as the emotional centerpiece of the night. “You have a couple bangers, and then you have a tender moment,” Everett says. “It’s as much for them as it is for me.”
