Today’s In the Groove opened with new music from Hot Chip. Their song “Random Violence” is from the upcoming album, A Long Way From Kansas, due out in January. It blended quite well with music from Nation of Language and LCD Soundsystem (who share a member with Hot Chip).

Highlights from the rest of the show included Michael Kiwanuka’s “Summer Clothes,” Worldpeace DMT’s “Ivy,” Dummy’s “April Limousine,” Slow Pulp’s “Yellow and Green,” and two tracks from Mei Semones (who is performing next March at the Ark in Ann Arbor, her old stomping grounds) — “Dumb Feeling” and “Howl” — before closing with Matthew Herbert and Momoko Gill’s “Need to Run (K – Lone Remix).”

Today’s show featured a special interview with John Cameron Mitchell, the writer, director and original star of Hedwig and the Angry Inch. The conversation explored his musical influences from Detroit punk band Death to David Bowie, Little Richard and Bad Brains.

Mitchell comes to Detroit tomorrow as part of the film’s 25th anniversary movie tour. The evening features a restored 4K screening of “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” an in-person conversation and audience Q&A with Mitchell, plus a special acoustic performance.

On top of that, new music from Wishy, Dummy, Allison de Groot and Rich Ruth and Nightbus.
