A Brownstown resident is dead and a Rockwood resident was hospitalized after a boat crash that happened early Sunday morning on the Detroit River, the Grosse Ile Police Department tells us.

The United States Coast Guard received a distress report about the crash near Celeron Island just before 3 a.m. The Coast Guard notified Grosse Ile PD, the Wayne County Sheriff's Office, and TowBoatUSGibraltar of the incident. We're told the boat departed the marina around 2:30 a.m.

Responding units found a 37-foot white Rinker vessel that had on the Habitat Shoals, southeast of the island. We're told the vessel was 80 percent out of the water when first responders arrived.

Investigators say that the owner of the vessel the Rockwood resident was injured and taken to a local hospital. The lone passenger in the boat the Brownstown resident was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities are working to determine the cause of the crash, including whether or not alcohol or drugs were contributing factors.

The Village of Holly has issued a Boil Water Advisory after a recent water main break.

The advisory went in place at 5 p.m. EST on Saturday, after a high-pressure water main break happened on Quick Road, west of North Holly Rd. We're told that water customers in the immediate area of Quick Rd. will have no water until the break is restored.

"Water should be brought to a rolling boil for at least one minute and allowed to cool before use. Bottled water may also be used," said police chief Jerry Narsh in a press release. "Tap water may continue to be used for bathing, showering, laundry, and general cleaning. Care should be taken to avoid swallowing the water while bathing or showering."

The village will notified residents when the advisory is lifted, with no timeline given as the Village Department of Public Works addresses the issue.

An auto worker was killed in a workplace accident at a Stellantis parts facility earlier this weekend, according to United Auto Workers and confirmed by Stellantis.

It happened Saturday morning at Stellantis Mopar Division, Center Line National Parts facility. The UAW identified the worker killed as James Brasher, a 30-year UAW member and laborer working on a renovation project when the incident occurred.

UAW President Shawn Fain and UAW Vice President Rich Boyer released the statement below regarding the incident:

A member of our union went to work today expecting to complete his shift and return home to his loved ones, but sadly, that will not happen.The UAW will investigate and demand details from the company of exactly how this tragedy occurred to ensure this kind of accident never happens again.Our entire UAW family mourns with James Brashers family and will support them every possible way we can. Stellantis released the statement below regarding the incident:

"Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family, friends and coworkers of an employee who was involved in a fatal workplace accident on Aug. 1 at the Centerline location, leased by Stellantis. The safety of our employees is our top priority. We are continuing to work with authorities to thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident. Out of respect for the family, we will not confirm the identity of the employee. The building, which previously housed Mopars administrative functions, is currently unoccupied as the company has relocated those operations to Auburn Hills."

Ahead of the 2026 MLB Trade Deadline, The Detroit Tigers have traded Tarik Skubal to the Los Angeles Dodgers for outfielder Zyhir Hope, and right-handed pitchers River Ryan and Brady Smith, first reported by ESPN and confirmed by the team on Sunday afternoon.

Through 15 starts this season, the left-hander has posted an Earned Run Average of 2.79, racking up 116 strikeouts in 96.2 innings pitched and posting a WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched) of 0.910. Skubal posted a FanGraphs WAR (Wins Above Replacement) of 2.6, behind only Casey Mize (2.9) among 2026 Tigers pitchers. Skubal missed a month of the season after undergoing arthroscopic surgery to remove loose bodies from his left elbow.

In his last start, Skubal pitched 6.2 innings, striking out six batters and giving up three earned runs on four hits. He received two standing ovations from the Comerica Park; one after striking out Taylor Ward in the first inning for his 1000th career strikeout and one when he was taken out in the seventh inning.

Looking at the trio of prospects, outfielder Zyhir Hope is ranked No. 25 in all of baseball and No. 5 in the Dodgers' system. Playing with the AA Tulsa Drillers, Hope has posted a .293 batting average, a .369 on-base percentage, a .530 slugging percentage, adding up to an OPS of .899. Hope has recorded 109 hits in 94 games, including 23 home runs and 87 RBIs to go along with 18 stolen bases. Hope is a career .281 hitter (305-for-1086) with a .384 on-base percentage, a .478 slugging percentage and an .862 OPS covering the last four seasons starting in 2023.  He has 62 doubles, 48 homers and 212 RBI in 294 minor league games.

Ryan and Smith are rated No. 7 and No. 17 in the Dodgers system, respectively. Ryan (No. 68 overall prospect in MLB), who missed all of 2025 after undergoing Tommy John surgery the year prior, has started 8 games in 2026 for AAA Oklahoma City Baseball Club, posting an 4.46 ERA while striking out 43 batters in 36 1/3 innings pitched and posting a WHIP of 1.29. From 2022-24, Ryan posted a combined 3.02 ERA with 230 strikeouts and 84 walks across 53 games (49 starts).

Splitting time between the Ottawa Tower Buzzers (A) and the Great Lake Loons (A+) this season, Smith has started 21 games, posting a 4.36 ERA while allowing just 62 hits in 74 1/3 innings pitched while racking up 104 strikeouts and posting a WHIP of 1.20. The 21-year-old has made 21 starts this season (19 with Ontario, two with Great Lakes).

Skubal won a landmark salary arbitration hearing this off-season against the Tigers, being awarded a $32 million salary, the highest mark in arbitration history, surpassing Juan Soto's $31 million in 2024. He is set to become a free agent following this season.

Skubal has won the last two American League Cy Young awards, given to the best pitcher in the AL. He's the first pitcher to win the AL Cy Young in consecutive seasons since Pedro Martinez in 1999 and 2000. He also was named an All Star in 2024 and 2025. In six playoff appearances, Skubal has posted a 2.04 ERA and 56 strikeouts.

Hailing from Seattle University, Skubal was drated by the Tigers in the ninth round of the 2018 MLB Draft. Making his major league debut in 2020, Skubal has been one of the best pitchers in baseball the last few seasons, posting a career ERA of 3.05 through 148 starts, racking up 300 more strikeouts (987) than hits (680).

As of Friday, July 31, the Tigers have a 52-58 record, placing them six games back from leading the American League Central and three games back from a Wild Card spot. The Tigers have been one of the best teams in baseball since June 1 (26-16, third-best record in baseball), but put themselves in a big hole after posting a 6-22 record in the month of May.

The trade deadline is 6 p.m. EST on Monday, August 3.

A Livonia man has been charged with four counts of Criminal Sexual Conduct after prosecutors say he assaulted an 11-year-old girl last month.

The Oakland County Sheriff's Office began investigating 31-year-old Jeremiah Michael Bishop on June 18, after the victim's grandfather reported allegations of sexual abuse involving his daughter's boyfriend.

Detectives were able to interview the victim's mother, who said her daughter had provided investigators with text messages where the suspect admits to the abuse.

The child disclosed "multiple incidents of abuse" in a recent forensic interview at Care House. He was arrested at his mother's residence last week.

Bishop was in court on Friday, July 24, where he was charged with four counts of Criminal Sexual Conduct in the Second Degree (victim under 13). The judge issued a cash surety bond of $850,000 with GPS tether provision. Bishop is set to appear in court again next month; if convicted, he faces up to 60 years in prison.

"Nothing is more important than protecting our children. The allegations that this 31-year-old man sexually assaulted a 11-year-old child are horrific. Anyone who preys on a child must be held fully accountable. We will do everything in our power to protect children and pursue justice for victims," Sheriff Michael J. Bouchard said in a press release.

The University of Michigan will pay outgoing athletic director Warde Manuel more than $7 million as part of a separation agreement between the two parties.

According to the agreement which was obtained via Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request by 7 News Detroit the University will pay Manuel a lump sum of $7,143,346 within 21 days of his resignation on Dec. 31.

Michigan will also contribute $108,000 towards Manuel's retirement account, waiving the policy requirement of 20 years of service towards the university. Per the deal, Manuel also gets the same access to sports tickets and golf course access as other former athletic directors.

A few other notes from the separation agreement:

Manuel agreed to a non-compete as part of the deal, which means he can't work in the athletic department of any Big Ten schools in 2027 or 2028 Manuel's representation will get $82,000 in legal fees from the university The agreement is not an admission of liability on the university's part.

Last week, the university announced that Warde would step down at the end of 2026. The Chicago law firm Jenner & Block has been investigating Michigan athletics since December, when head football coach Sherrone Moore was fired for having a romantic relationship with his assistant. The results of the investigation have not been made available to the public, but Michigan released it's own findings along with this statement.

"Maintaining the confidentiality of the investigation protects the privacy of the members of our community who participated, promotes the willingness of witnesses to participate in any future investigations by allaying concerns relating to privacy or risk of retaliation, preserves investigative integrity, and protects the attorney-client privilege that covers the investigation," Michigan said in the FAQs section of the findings, as to why a report has not been made available.

On December 10 last year, Moore was fired "for cause" from the Head Football Coach position at the University of Michigan, following allegations of an inappropriate relationship with his former staffer Paige Shiver. Prosecutors say just hours after losing his job, Moore broke into her home and threatened to harm himself. Moore pleaded no contest to misdemeanor charges back in April, following a deal that dismissed more serious charges.

Police say that Romanieo Jr. was last seen departing his family's residence in the Eagle Pond apartment complex area in Walled Lake, Michigan. According to his family, the boy is known to take walks for personal space and exercise, frequently taking routes toward the local Dollar General and the fresh supermarket.

A 23-year-old Waterford Township man was shot and killed at a block party in Pontiac on Saturday night, the Oakland County Sheriff's Office tells us.

The shooting happened at a home in the 80 block of Mariva Street, as police got multiple calls from the block party with about 100 people in attendance.

Deputies waded through the crowd and found the victim, who had been shot once in the head. He was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

At the scene, a 23-year-old Pontiac man came to police and admitted to the shooting, saying that he is a licensed CPL holder. Deputies saw the handgun protruding his waist band and took him into custody.

The suspect is currently lodged in the Oakland County Jail, awaiting trial.

An 80-year-old Shelby Township man is dead after crashing an off-road vehicle in Holly earlier this weekend.

The crash happened at the Holly Oaks ORV Park, with the Oakland County Sheriff's Office saying the crash happened sometime between 11:45 a.m. and 2:16 p.m. on Saturday, July 25.

Investigators say that the man was operating a 2022 Can-Am Outlander while riding on the park's trail system near the top of a hill. We're told that as he went down the hill, he lost control of the ORV, before being thrown from the vehicle and overthrowing it.

The man, who was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials do not believe alcohol or drugs played a factor in the crash.

"It remains unknown how much time elapsed between the crash and when it was discovered and reported by another park patron," said an Oakland County Sheriff's Office spokesperson in a press release. "The investigation remains ongoing."

A Detroit father has been charged with multiple counts of child abuse after prosecutors say he took his 1-year-old daughter to a party, left her to swim with neighbors, and crashed his motorcycle with his daughter hitting her head in the crash.

Investigators allege that Kabamba Kyalangalilwa, 35, took his daughter to a party at a home in the 12800 block of Braile Street in Detroit on Sunday, June 28, around 11:30 a.m. After arriving at the party, prosecutors say the man took his daughter to a neighboring home and asked residents he did not know to allow her to swim with their children. He then left the child at the stranger's home and went back to the party.

Prosecutors claim that five hours later, an intoxicated Kyaloangalilwa picked up his daughter and put her on his motorcycle, unsecured. We're told that he proceeded to speed away on the bike before losing control, causing both him and the 1-year-old to fall off the side of the motorcycle.

The infant hit her head on a curb and was hospitalized to treat lacerations to her head, face and legs. When police got to the scene, the man tried to speed away before abandoning the crashed bike and fleeing on foot before ultimately being arrested.

The 35-year-old has been charged with the following:

1 count of Second Degree Child Abuse 1 count of Child Abandonment 1 count of Fourth Degree Child Abuse 1 count of Operating while License Suspended, Revoked or Denied 1 count of reckless driving

Kyaloangalilwa was arraigned earlier this month. Bond was initially set at $100,000 cash/surety before it was lowered to $25,000 paired with a GPS tether and a 9 p.m.-6 a.m. curfew. He's set to appear in court again next month.

"I do not recall in all of my years as a prosecutor and judge ever seeing a set of facts like this. The alleged conduct of this defendant was way beyond atrocious and horrendous. This poor baby deserved the appropriate care, dedication, and simple human decency. It is miraculous that she is still among the living," said Prosecutor Kym Worthy in a press release on the charges.

Two people were hospitalized after a fire broke out at a motel in Warren late Wednesday night, the city's fire department tells us.

First responders got the scene of the motel in the 2300 block of Dequindre road, near Nine Mile, around 11 p.m.

Firefighters were met with heavy smoke, and found a man inside before removing him from the building as they fought the fire. The man was transported to a nearby hospital, where he is in crticial condition.

Fire officials say they found a second person, a woman, who suffered injuries after jumping out the window from a second-story walkway. She was transported to the hospital, but she's expected t make a full recovery.

The cause of the fire, which firefighters contained to the room that it started in, is being investigated at this time. Investigators say the fire doesn't appear to be suspecious.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services said the number of people with confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis jumped to 5,002 as of Friday morning.

That's up by 690 cases from Thursday, July 16, and more than four times the amount of reported cases since last week.

MDHHS also reported that 102 people have been hospitalized with symptoms from cyclosporiasis.

State health officials have released updated recommendations for cyclosporiasis, saying that early results indicate that lettuce or salad greens may be the possible source. According to the Michigan Department of Health, no specific type of produce, grower or supplier has been identified as the source, and other food items cannot be completely ruled out.

Below are the recent recommendations from the MDHHS:

Focus on lettuce and salad greens

Purchase whole heads: Buy whole heads of lettuce rather than pre-washed, bagged lettuce or pre-mixed salad kits. Discard outer layers: Before preparation, throw away the outer two to three layers of leaves. Wash inner leaves: Thoroughly wash the remaining inner leaves under clean running water. Prioritize cooking: For any greens that can be cooked, cooking to a temperature of at least 158 F (70 C) is the safest option, as the parasite is resistant to routine chemical disinfection and washing alone cannot guarantee its removal.

Previous outbreaks

1 person is dead and two others have been hospitalized after a shooting on the freeway overnight, Michigan State Police tells us.

The shooting happened just before 1 a.m. Wednesday on eastbound I-96 near Bentler.

Investigators say that this appears to be an isolated incident, meaning there is no known threat to the public.

The eastbound lanes in that area were closed for more than four hours, but that area of the freeway has since been reopened as MSP investigates the shooting.

An MSP spokesperson said that the victims in this shooting drove themselves to the Detroit Police Department's Sixth Precinct. A 7 News Detroit crew saw a car with bullet holes in front of the precinct, but the spokesperson could not confirm that that car was the car in question

A Detroit man has been charged with murder after prosecutors say he shot and killed a contracted custodian outside a Detroit elementary school earlier this month.

The shooting happened on Thursday, July 2, around 5:15 p.m. in the parking lot of Chrysler Elementary School. Police say three men got into an argument and that escalated into a physical fight. According to Detroit Public Schools Community District, no students or staff were on the school campus at the time of the shooting.

Kevin Flagg, 43, has been charged after prosecutors say he shot and killed Devin Burns, a 25-year-old from Detroit.

The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office says Flagg has been charged with one count of of Second-Degree Murder, one count of Manslaughter Statutory Short Form, and two counts of Felony Firearm.

Flagg appeared in court last week, with bond initially set at $250,000 cash/surety bond before being reduced to $150,000 in a follow-up court appearance.

Flagg is due in court again two more times later this month.

Police in Wayne County are searching for at least one suspect who they say fired shots at them on the freeway, with one suspect already in custody.

"Please avoid the area of Peerless and Damman due to a developing law enforcement situation," said the Harper Woods Department of Public Safety on social media. "If you live in the area, please remain in your homes. We will update when possible."

Westbound Interstate 94 at Allard was closed for about an hour after officers were shot at by carjacking suspects, authorities tell us.

We're told that the shots were fired at officers around 9:45 a.m. on I-94 and Allard/Vernier, near Harper Woods. A police spokesperson tells us that no one was hit in this incident.

We're told that one person is in custody, and at the time, that police are still looking for three suspects: two men and a woman. Police set up a perimeter and tracked the suspects connected to the shooting with K9 officers. Later in the day, Sheriff Washington told reporters they were now searching for one suspect, and possibly another.

The crash happened just before 3 a.m. this morning, as authorities responded to a single-vehicle rollover crash on eastbound I-94, near M-10.

MSP says that serious injuries have been reported from this crash, but it's unclear how many people have been injured at this time.

The freeway was re-opened around 8 a.m.

A man is dead after police say he was shot at Downriver Marina over the weekend.

Police responded to reports of shots fired at the marina, located in the 11200 block of US Turnpike, around 7 a.m. on Sunday.

Authorities tell us the man a 54-year-old Marina resident was shot and died at the hospital.

Investigators say that the suspects were last seen fleeing the marina, heading westbound on S. Huron River Drive.

Police are looking into what led up to this shooting, which is being investigated as a homicide. Anyone with additional information is asked to contact the Monroe County Sheriff's Office Detective Bureau at 734-240-7738 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAKUP, where you can remain anonymous.

With the 22nd pick of the first round of the 2026 MLB Draft, the Detroit Tigers selected right-handed Coastal Carolina pitcher Cameron Flukey.

Appearing in 44 games and starting 34 across three seasons with the Chanticleers, Flukey posted an earned run average of 4.08, giving up 150 hits and 60 walks in 180.2 innings pitched and racking up 232 strikeouts. As a sophomore last season, Flukey helped lead Coastal Carolina to a College World Series appearance, earning a first team All-American nod and posting a 7-2 record with a 3.09 ERA. He was out for two months this past season after suffering a stress fracture in his ribs.
