In The Groove Song of the Week: Friko’s ‘Something Worth Waiting For’

I’m seeing more examples of indie bands (whatever that means today) finding their way to an audience by presenting a solid cover. Australian group Royel Otis is one that stands out, with their solid, true-to-form cover of the Cranberries’ “Linger.”

Chicago indie rockers Friko are another example, first arriving to my ears via their forceful cover of Radiohead’s “Weird Fishes,” which, admittedly, is a ballsy one to cover (but they nailed it).

It got me hooked enough that I started digging into the brand new sophomore album, “Something Worth Waiting For,” and have completely fallen in love with the title track.

It starts out like a blurry vision; like an acoustic guitar and a distant voice are just barely making their way out of a dusty vinyl groove off in the distance, before blossoming into this massive anthemic swell of waiting for the good thing even though you might not measure up yourself.

“So I’m waiting for something more
Something worth waiting for
I wanna see you and me
Waking up, glad to be
So I’m waiting for something more
Something worth waiting for”

This is exactly what you love to see from an artist on their sophomore release. More space, bigger sound, the growth they always dreamed up after praying that anyone would even care about the debut in the first place. Luckily for Friko, they’re continuing to carve out a space for themselves and their new stadium-ready sound.

For anyone looking to check them out in Detroit, they’ll be playing at The Loving Touch on Oct. 17.

MI Local: Sounds Like Detroit preview with KTCHN

This week, I’m excited to introduce more listeners to one of the four artists set to perform on Aug. 13 at Batch Brewing for our annual Sounds Like Detroit Showcase. KTCHN composes and performs transcendent and dreamily epic jazz-adjacent suites adorned with celestial vocals and enchanting melodic motifs with their piano at the center of it all.

KTCHN is otherwise known as Kazza, a Detroit-based interdisciplinary artist, musician. and educator. On the show, we talked about their experience working as a pianist, vocalist, composer, producer, and visual artist. We also spoke about Kazza’s key influences, including many prog-inclined artists like Hiatus Kaiyote and more, along with their formative experiences growing up in a musical family and what it inspired the song that won them a spot at Sounds Like Detroit, a 7-miute epic titled “Willow,” which featured a full ensemble.

Stay tuned to MI Local, because in the coming weeks I’ll be welcoming all of the artists on the lineup to the studio, including Aisha Ellis, Michelle Held, and Jubilee Jackson. Get your tickets now, and join me at Batch Brewing on Aug.13 to celebrate these talented local artists!

Also on the show this week, new groovy sounds from local indie-pop artist Jacob Sigman, and mystic-folk vibes coming out of Ann Arbor from Naomi Wolfe! We also belatedly spun a bit of a patriotic-themed ballad for America’s 250th, from the northwest Michigan based Americana maven, May Erlewine! All that, and a few updates on shows you can catch around the region.

Thanks for listening!

MI Local: Carmel Liburdi, Mark Jewett, Jackamo and Sounds Like Detroit

Before I tell you all about the special guests we had performing live in-studio during this week’s MI Local, I have to tell you about Sounds Like Detroit!

WDET’s annual Sounds Like Detroit Showcase will be on Thursday, Aug. 13, at Batch Brewing, featuring KTCHN (jazz), Aisha Ellis (jazz/neo-soul), Jubilee Jackson (hip-hop/R&B), and Michelle Held (folk).

These are artists that WDET listeners selected by vote, based on their video submissions to NPR’s Tiny Desk Contest. Tickets are available now. Join me at Batch Brewing to see all four artists perform: let’s celebrate local music together!

NOW, back to this week’s show! We heard new tracks from local artists like The Sad Hour (goth-rock), just in time for “Summerween,” as well as a new track from jazz composer/bandleader Austin Di Pietro.

My in-studio guests included Carmel Liburdi, Mark Jewett, and the sister duo known as Jackamo.

Mark Jewett is a Plymouth based singer-songwriter who blends everything from tender folk to driving power-pop, while Jackamo lean toward Americana-rock sweetened with dazzling harmonies. Jewett will lead the group, The Strategic Advisors, on Thursday, July 9, at The Ark in Ann Arbor, with Jackamo opening. Both of these artists also performed live on the show this week!

Carmel Liburdi is a Detroit-based indie-folk singer-songwriter with a wide range of influences, including some DIY punk energy, but leaning toward sweet melodies with charming turns of phrase. Carmel released a new song this week and WDET listeners got to hear it for the first time last night! After we chatted with Carmel about their upcoming shows, we were also treated to a live performance.

Thanks for listening! And see you on Aug. 13 at Batch Brewing!

In The Groove Song of the Week: ‘If You Change’ by Widowspeak

I’m a sucker for a sweet sentiment wrapped up in a flannel-toned, 90’s alternative rock song that sounds like it could be the intro music for a family-friendly teen drama from 1995.

If that sounds hyper-specific, know that it’s a subset of music that’s very popular right now, thanks to Waxahatchee, Kevin Morby, Kurt Vile , Courtney Barnett and others. It’s rooted in bands chasing that sound of Big Star and Lemonheads; of big guitars with a bit of fuzz and layers of jangle on top. It’s full but non-threatening.

It’s music for soft, emotional lumberjacks. Or if you want to be boring about it, a contemporary take on college radio from 30 years ago.

No one is doing it better in my book than Widowspeak, the husband-and-wife duo of Molly Hamilton and Robert Earl Thomas. They’re now based in Brooklyn but originally from Washington. (You can hear that geography in their music.) They released their seventh album “Roses” on Captured Tracks on June 5.

Their excellent new single “If You Change” is everything I just described and more; a lovely little piece of dream pop with just a splash of alt-country. And the sentiment! Listen to these lyrics:

If you change, don’t change too much
‘Cause I really loved this one

It goes deeper than what I first suspected — a sweet little love song about liking someone as they are, even as they grow old together. According to vocalist-songwriter Molly Hamilton, it’s more than that, writing that she “thought about the fear of change, and when things (situations, objects) feel stuck in time because of a fear of ruining them. You always hear “mint condition” as though it is as an asset, but it also means that thing hasn’t been used, lived with, loved. It never gets to fulfill its destiny.”

Even without that lyrical depth, the song is an absolute banger that’s been stuck in my head for days.

The Metro: Behind some of Motown’s biggest hits was a woman the label never properly credited

When Sylvia Moy auditioned for Motown as a singer it opened a lane for her as a songwriter. But she would eventually discover that that lane would be littered with barriers.

Moy persevered, building a career at Motown as a songwriter and producer on some of the label’s biggest tracks. She also played a role in developing Stevie Wonder’s career as he began to notch multiple hit songs.

Moy, however, was not given credit for her efforts, and for many years, the scale of her impact remained unknown.

Dr. Margena Christian wrote “It’s No Wonder: The Life and Times of Motown’s Legendary Songwriter Sylvia Moy.”

Dr. Margena Christian wrote about Moy’s career in her new book  “It’s No Wonder: The Life and Times of Motown’s Legendary Songwriter Sylvia Moy.” In it, she chronicles Moy’s early life, and her struggle to receive credit for her contributions to Motown and music history.
