A man has died after crashing a vehicle into a guard rail early Sunday morning, the Oakland County Sheriff's Office tells us.

We're told the crash happened around 2:30 a.m., on M-59 near Livernois Road.

Investigators say that the man, identified by police as 35-year-old Troy resident Cody Trebush, was driving at a high rate of speed and didn't properly navigate a curve, leaving the roadway and striking the guardrail.

Trebush, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say that excessive speed was a factor in the crash, but aren't sure if drugs or alcohol factored into the incident.

Police in Romulus are searching for a driver who hit a bicyclist, leaving the victim with critical injuries before taking off from the scene Friday evening.

The bicyclist, a 55-year-old Romulus resident, was hit by the vehicle round 6:35 p.m. on Wickham Road near Merriman Road, police said. The driver continued going southbound on Wickham.

The victim was rushed to the hospital with injuries that police say are critical.

Police are looking for the driver of a dark gray 2025 Ford Escape with Wisconsin license plate 4019AFT.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Romulus Police Department at 734-941-8400.

An arrest has been made after a person set fire inside Huntington Place in Detroit last week, officials say.

According to the Detroit Fire Department, the suspect walked into Huntington Place just before 9 a.m. on April 26. He then used water bottles filled with gasoline and doused the carpet with it before setting it on fire.

The fire did minimal damage and officials responded quickly and extinguished the fire. The fire did not impact guests, staff or any events.

The fire department said a vigilant person who saw the suspect contacted authorities after seeing the story about the incident on the news.

The persons identity is being withheld at this time since there hasnt been an arraignment yet.

Drivers along I-94 in metro Detroit this weekend should prepare for headaches as there will be several closures and traffic shifts in the area.

The Restore I-94 project is continuing and it means more lane closures and some spots of the freeway being closed completely. The three-year project will repair about 13 miles of the freeway between Detroit Metro Airport and the Dearborn-Detroit border.

Crews will also be closing I-94 this Saturday and Sunday for 15-minute periods, and crews will be blocking a lane on both directions of I-94 from I-275 to Michigan Avenue to build up the shoulders for future traffic.

Were going to take you down to two lanes from now and for pretty much three years, said Diane Cross, a spokesperson with the Michigan Department of Transportation.

Cross calls the work being done critical on roadway untouched for decades between I-275 and US-12. It will be taken down to two lanes, and Merriman and Middlebelt service drives will be down to one lane.

In late July, it's expected that there will be a traffic shift to begin reconstruction on one side of I-94. Construction will divert eastbound traffic onto the westbound side.

We will start tearing up the eastbound side and start rebuilding that, Cross said. Seems like a long way away, but we got a lot of work to do.

The Southeast Michigan National Association of Letter Carriers is gearing up for the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive this weekend.

The nationwide Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive is Saturday, May 9, 2026.

On Thursday, the association held a kickoff event at Batch Brewing Company in Detroit with Mayor Mary Sheffield.

The Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive has reportedly collected more than 1.94 billion pounds of food over the course of its 30-year run across the country.

People are invited to leave non-perishable food donations in a bag by their mailbox this Saturday. A letter carrier will pick it up and get it to where it needs to be. Items in non-breakable containers, like soup, cereals, cereal bars, etc, are encouraged.

The Southeast Michigan National Association of Letter Carriers said the donations will go directly to local food pantries.

The Allen Park police chief issued an apology letter on Friday over a failure to activate the tornado siren for the community on April 15.

Your outrage is entirely justified. In moments of crisis, you rely on our systems to provide life-saving information, and on Wednesday, those systems remained silent when you needed them most, wrote Allen Park Chief of Police Eron Feltz on the department's official Facebook page.

He said hundreds have reached out to the city and police department.

The Detroit Tigers are rewarding rookie infielder Kevin McGonigle with a massive contract extension.

The team announced Wednesday that they have agreed to terms with McGonigle on an eight-year, $150 million guaranteed contract extension that will officially start next season.

Running from the 2027-2034 seasons, the deal includes McGonigle's final five seasons of club control plus his first three years of free agency, and includes contract escalators for the final three seasons that could bring the total value to $160 million.

The salary guarantee breakdowns are:

2027 - $1 million 2028 - $7 million 2029 - $16 million 2023 - $21 million 2031 - $22 million 2032-34 - $23 million

The 21-year-old made the Detroit Tigers team coming out of Spring Training and was ranked as the No. 2 overall prospect in all of baseball.

This season, he is batting .311 with a .909 OPS in 61 at-bats. He has 19 hits, one home run, 8 RBIs and 12 runs scored.

A Detroit firefighter is charged in a crash that left an 85-year-old woman dead in Roseville while he was off duty Thursday night.

The crash happened on Groesbeck Highway near Martin Road.

Investigators say 26-year-old Travis Turner was speeding and under the influence when he hit another vehicle.

Eleanor Johnson of Oak Park, 85, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Turner and his passenger, his girlfriend, were both injured.

Turner is charged with operating while intoxicated causing death and possessing a weapon while under the influence. He was given a $100,000 bond. He is required to wear a GPS tether if he's released.

Turner has a probable cause hearing scheduled for April 22 and a preliminary examination on April 29.

Turner is on leave without pay.

The Detroit Fire Department released a statement:

"We are aware of a tragic crash that occurred last night involving one of our members, who was off duty at the time and driving a personal vehicle in another jurisdiction. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim and her loved ones during this incredibly difficult time."This incident is being investigated by the appropriate law enforcement agency, and we are fully cooperating with that investigation."The member involved has been placed on leave without pay pending the outcome of this investigation. Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido released a statement:

Every time someone drinks and gets behind the wheel, they are making a conscious choice to put lives at risk. The allegations are that this defendant was legally intoxicated when the crash occurred and a woman is now deceased. There is no way to bring her back. However, my office will work to see that justice is achieved.

It is officially game on for the WNBA: the league announced Thursday that Detroit has been approved for an expansion team by the board of governors.

The team has yet to be named but is slated to tip off at Little Caesars Arena in 2029.

A man stabbed an officer inside the lobby of the Livonia Police Department on Friday morning, police confirm to 7 News Detroit.

According to police, the man walked into the police station on Farmington Road around 9:07 a.m., waving around a knife and saying he wanted to kill everyone.

Police say officers attempted to de-escalate the situation before deploying a taser. Once the suspect fell during one of the taser attempts, he reportedly stabbed one of the officers while they were trying to take him into custody.

According to police, the suspect also kicked one of the officers who had his gun drawn, and it accidentally discharged, but didn't strike anyone.

Both the officer and suspect were transported to the hospital. Police say the officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Police tell 7 News Detroit the suspect was also involved in an assault in Westland around 8:50 a.m. before arriving at the Livonia police station.

The investigation is ongoing.

The first-ever two-day hot sauce festival is coming to Detroit this summer, presented by the Masonic Temple and 2 Dogs Hot Sauce.

The festival will take place at the Masonic Temple on Aug. 1 and 2, and people attending can sample a variety of hot sauces, plus enjoy spicy challenges, games, live music and hands-on classes.

According to the 2 Dogs Hot Sauce website, the company was created in Ferndale by Brian Jones and his collaborator, Todd Larson. The company is gluten-free and vegan-friendly.

Detroit fire crews were on the scene of a massive fire at the historic Maccabees Building on the campus of Wayne State University on Wednesday afternoon.

No injuries reported after fire at Maccabees Building at Wayne State University

While the investigation is ongoing, Wayne State officials say an air handling unit outside on the 11th floor ignited in an electrical fire. No one was injured. Officials say the fire happened on a faculty floor.

Officials say the building mostly suffered water damage, but the electrical damage has not yet been assessed. They say they will walk through the building to determine the full extent of any damage.

The building will remain closed while the damage survey is underway. Once that is complete, undamaged parts of the building will be reopened.

Video showed a massive plume of smoke coming from the building, located along Woodward Avenue just north of Warren Avenue, as well as flames coming out of windows.

Wayne State University sent out an alert that said the building had been evacuated because of the fire.

"I was in the library doing my English work and my mom texted me 'are you OK? Are you OK? Theres a fire going on,'" freshman student Derrik St. James said.

As of 1:58 p.m., WSU reported the fire in the building was out and contained to the 11th floor. According to the university, there are no known injuries at this time. Crews arrived at the scene within two minutes of the call coming in.

Businesses were open at the time the fire broke out. Freshman student Maria Witcher says she was in the middle of the lunch rush at Shield's Pizza, which is located on the ground floor of the Maccabee's Building.

"I had tables in here. I literally had their soup and salad in my hand. As I go to serve it, a homeless man comes and yells 'Oh, my God! Theres a fire. Your building's on fire. I hope you all know that,'" Witcher said.

Witcher says police came in shortly after and evacuated the employees.

"It was a whole bunch of smoke. It was black smoke everywhere. The building, I thought, the whole top was on fire," Witcher said as she described the fire.

Shield's Pizza and other businesses have since been given the all clear to continue business as usual. The WSU welcome center also remains open.

Woodward Avenue has reopened at Warren.

According to Historic Detroit, the 14-story building was designed by Albert Kahn and is also the former home of WXYZ, which started broadcasting from the building in 1948.

Wayne State University purchased the building in 2002, and in an update in 2025, said that as part of campus enhancement, academic programs would be moved from the building and will instead house administrative departments.

The Jewish Federation of Detroit is fast-tracking $1 million in emergency security funding following the attack at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield Township last week.

The organization says the funding will help provide immediate grants to expand armed guards and safety resources at temples, schools, camps and other Jewish institutions in metro Detroit.

Eligible institutions can receive grants matching up to four times their investment.

A suspect who was armed and barricaded inside a home in Bloomfield Township Thursday evening was taken into custody, police say.

Law enforcement responded to the incident and asked people to avoid Quarton Road between Franklin and Inkster roads. The Oakland County Sheriffs Office and Oakland County SWAT assisted Bloomfield Township police.

South Hills Middle School was used as a staging area for authorities.

Shortly after 10 p.m., police provided an update and said the suspect was taken into custody. There were no injuries reported.

Police say the area has been secured.

Its unclear at this time what led up to the incident.

A measles outbreak has been identified in Washtenaw County after a third person was diagnosed with the disease linked to an original case.

According to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, a measles outbreak is defined as three or more related cases of measles.

The three linked cases have been reported since March 12, all in the county, after an adult was diagnosed with measles on March 11. A day later, a second case was identified in the county, tied to the first case.

At this time, there are no new public exposure sites to report in Michigan, according to the state. The initial case was associated with travel, and the additional cases linked to the outbreak demonstrate how quickly measles can spread to people who are not immune.

According to health officials, anyone at the above locations during the specific times and dates should monitor themselves for symptoms of measles for 21 days after the exposure. Officials said vaccination rates in Michigan have continued to drop over the past year, leaving more kids and young adults vulnerable to the virus, which can cause hospitalization, brain swelling, pneumonia and even death.

Temple Israel shared photographs on social media on Thursday showing the devastation inside the building in the aftermath of the March 12 attack in West Bloomfield Township.

The images, taken by Emily Elconin, show charred pictures and walls in the hallway, broken glass and debris, and food still sitting out on kids' tables.

The Oakland County sheriff and local faith leaders held a press conference on Thursday afternoon about moving forward as a community and putting a stop to antisemitism.

"It seems like to me that anti-Semitism and anti-Semitic behavior has become normalized. Not here, not with us, not with our team, and not with law enforcement in Oakland County, but across the country, it's been allowed and that's unacceptable ... you see kids at colleges getting yelled at and bullied and even physically assaulted simply because they're Jewish. We as a community, we as a nation have to stand up. I don't care what party you're in. I don't care what job you're in, whether it's in public or private venue, we have to stand up and say no," said Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard.

Sheriff Bouchard also addressed the response of law enforcement on March 12, saying more than 600 officers arrived to help.

"We're even getting complaints we sent too many people. Let me be clear, if we've got people in risk, we're sending whoever we need to send, and we're gonna take care of the situation and the threat, period. And if you think we sent too many people, turn off the TV. We're gonna send what we need to send to stop the threat, protect the people, and make sure the situation is made safe," said Sheriff Bouchard.

Oakland Hills Country Club will officially open its new clubhouse in April after a historic rebuild.

Construction began in December 2023, following a massive fire that destroyed the historic clubhouse in February 2022.

According to officials at the club, construction on what was called the "Next 100 Project" will be finished on schedule and on budget, just as Michigan golf season begins.

Other aspects of the Next 100 Project opened last summer with a modernized driving range and a new greens and grounds facility for both of its courses.

Later this month, the new golf shopw ill open, and on Easter Sunday, Oakland Hills will welcome members for the first time, with more than 1,600 people expected for brunch, followed by a grand opening celebration.

Club officials said the new clubhouse is designed after the old clubhouse, with a 10-pillared veranda steps from the No. 1 and No. 10 holes on the South Course. Inside and out, architectural details follow elements from Howard C. Crane's original design.

Walking the fairways of the South Course and seeing the clubhouse in the distance once again reminds us how special it is to have one of the finest amphitheaters for golf anywhere in the world, PGA Emeritus Professional Steve Brady said in a statement.

Oakland Hills' 110-year legacy and championship history are proudly on display throughout the two-story building, which includes member locker rooms, dining areas, lounges, and a grand ballroom, all offering expansive views of the acclaimed South Course.

The club underwent a two-year restoration on its famed South Course and reopened the course in the summer of 2021.

Oakland Hills has been the site of 17 golf championships, including six U.S. Opens and three PGA Championships, plus the 2004 Ryder Cup. It's last major was the 2008 PGA Championship, and it most recently hosted the 2024 U.S. Junior Amateur.

In the future, it's set to host seven future USGA Championships, the first being the 2029 U.S. Women's Amateur. Others include the 2034 and 2051 U.S. Open and the 2031 and 2042 U.S. Women's Open.

Two people are dead, and one person has been arrested after a police chase and crash in Clinton Township that police tell us happened over the weekend.

Around 2:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 14, authorities attempted to pull over a car driving at a high rate of speed on southbound Gratiot Avenue near Quinn Road. We're told the driver of that car started going faster when police lights were activated.

After a pursuit, the driver of the car ultimately crashed into another vehicle at the intersection of Gratiot Avenue and 14 Mile.

We're told that two people in the other vehicle were killed in the crash. One of those people was a 25-year-old Southfield man; the other has not been formally identified.

After the crash, the driver of the car that police say caused the incident, a 54-year-old Sterling Heights man, was arrested, with an arraignment pending.

During a Friday evening press conference with multiple law enforcement agencies about the attack at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield Township, a timeline of events and new details were released, including that the suspect shot and killed himself during a gunfight with security.

The FBI confirmed the suspect was 41-year-old Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, a Dearborn Heights resident. Ghazali had no previous criminal history, no registered weapons and had not been involved with any previous FBI investigations, said Jennifer Runyan, special agent in charge of the FBI Detroit Field Office.

Ghazali then became trapped since the vehicle was jammed in the hallway.12:22 p.m. Second guard engages suspect in gunfight from front of the vehicle. Then, the vehicles engine compartment caught fire. Ghazali then shot himself in the head.

Runyan says commercial-grade fireworks were found in the bed of the pickup truck as well as several jugs of flammable liquid that's believed to be gasoline. Some of that was consumed in the fire.

Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard says 605 law enforcement officers responded to the scene from 42 different agencies.

He says a total of 63 law enforcement officers were sent to the hospital from smoke inhalation. First responders continued to pour into the building despite the fire to make sure there was no threat and to evacuate the innocent.

Bouchard says training within the last month at Temple Israel was a coincidence, despite some questioning the timing.

Were training all the time as agencies with our partners, our houses of worship, our schools. That was one of those trainings. There was no credible intelligence that it was about to get hit, the sheriff said.

To the partners across the state, federal agencies and more, "thank you for your invaluable assistance during one of the darkest days in West Bloomfield Township's history," West Bloomfield Township Police Chief Dale Young said.

Officials said there are no new known threats to the community.
