'He was my best friend.' Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer issues statement on father's passing

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced that her father, Richard Whitmer, passed away on Monday evening.

Richard Whitmer, who graduated from Western Michigan University and earned his law degree from the University of Michigan, served in state government in Michigan, including as Commerce Secretary to Governor Bill Milliken. He also worked as CEO of Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Michigan.

The governor issued the following statement about the passing of her father:

"My beloved father passed away last night. He held a lot of impressive positions in his long life. He led major non-profits, sat on statewide boards, and served in the cabinet of one of my predecessors, Governor Milliken. But for me, he was just dad.He was the one who always saw my potential and believed in me, from the first speech I gave in fifth grade to my States of the State as governor. He was always there, whether in the back of the classroom or in the front row of the House Chamber, cheering me on.He was the one who picked me up when I was down or told me to get my act together when I screwed up. When my grades were slacking in high school, he inspired me to live up to my potential. Because of his encouragement, I did.He was the one who suggested I consider public service. As a student at MSU who dreamt of a life in sports broadcasting, he was the one who told me to check out an internship at the capital to see how state government really worked. I havent looked back since. My siblings and I have a ton of beautiful memories and hilarious stories about our dad. And I was thrilled that my girls got to make their own memories with him too. I got to see my dad become a proud, doting grandfather. He was always quick to laugh, happy to offer advice, and proud most of all that his children and grandchildren had grown up with those fundamental Michigan values of kindness, respect, and humor that he taught us and lived up to every day of his life.He was my best friend, most trusted counselor, and next-door neighbor until I moved into the Governors Residence. I would not be where I am and who I am without my dad. Today, Im sad, but Im grateful too. Im grateful for the time we got to spend together, for the things he taught me, and the stories Ill carry with me forever."

Hundreds of Oakland County Jack and Jill of America volunteers help families in need with Forgotten Harvest

Nearly 200 mothers, fathers and children with the Oakland County Chapter of Jack and Jill of America rolled up their sleeves at Forgotten Harvest in Oak Park on Saturday.

From 9 a.m.-1 p.m., all the volunteers were on hand packing healthy food for families facing hunger across metro Detroit.

This year's theme, "Learning while we Serve", paired hands-on volunteer work with lessons on nutrition, food deserts and food equity, helping young people understand not just how to serve, but why it matters.

"The great thing about this service project is we're going to spend a lot of time teaching the children about food insecurity," said Johanne Pearson, the President of Jack and Jill Oakland County. "We want them to understand what it is, how it impacts our community, and what they can do, that they have the personal power to make a difference in doing service."

Every Jack and Jill chapter across America picks a day to honor Dr. King's call to serve others, and celebrates Jack and Jill of America's 88th Founders Day.

The chapter is also asking the community to support healthy food donations to Forgotten Harvest's Community Choice Market.

Full list of snow emergencies declared in metro Detroit as winter storm arrives

With snowfall underway on Sunday morning, snow emergencies have been declared this weekend across metro Detroit.

Temperatures are expected to drop to the mid single digits Sunday morning, then warm up into the teens with wind chills still in the single digits or near zero. Snowfall totals will range from 1-3" north, to around 7" south of Detroit.

Could the World Economic Forum come to Detroit in the future?

After more than five decades of being hosted in Switzerland, the World Economic Forum could be looking for a new home in the future, and Detroit is potentially one of the spots.

Larry Fink, the chairman and CEO at BlackRock, who is also the interim co-chair of the World Economic Forum, spoke at the opening sequence of the meeting earlier this week.

"For 56 years, the World Economic Forum has been synonymous with Davos. And thats likely to remain true for a while," Fink said. "But you should also see WEF start doing something new: showing upand listeningin the places where the modern world is actually built. Davos, yes. But also places like Detroit and Dublinand cities like Jakarta and Buenos Aires."

The annual meeting of the WEF brings in some of the biggest companies and leaders in the world. According to Fink's speech, this year's WEF had nearly 1,000 CEOs and board chairs, as well as 65 heads of state and government, representing 40% of the world's population.

"Were here for something bigger than ourselves and the organizations we represent. We believe economic progress should be shared. We believe prosperity should reach further than it has. And we believe institutions like WEF still matter in making that happen," Fink said.

A global event like the WEF would be a massive event for the City of Detroit. In March 1994, Detroit hosted a G-7 Jobs Conference with the U.S., Canada, the EU, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom.

According to a document from the Clinton Presidential Library, the conference took place March 14-15 at several locations in Detroit, including The Westin Hotel, then-COBO Hall and the Fox Theatre.

In the document from the library, one of the talking points described why it was important that the conference was held in Detroit.

"It is significant that the conference is being held in Detroit, in the heart of the industrial Midwest. The Midwest suffered many of the maladies now experienced by other industrial nations, and has learned how to produce better for the emerging export market. The region is coming back by reviving its manufacturing base. The American auto industry -- long buffeted by trade -- is thriving, putting employees back to work and making top quality cars in state-of-the-art factories," the document reads.

The city reported a water main break on South Dearborn on Thursday evening. The city reported another break near Hanna and Oakwood, but the Melvindale mayor clarified on Friday that it was actually a leaky valve and not a break.

"It kept getting deeper and deeper and deeper," said Carolyn Thompson, who lives on South Dearborn Street. She was one of the first residents to call the city when she saw water flooding the street.

"It was just all of a sudden there, so I called the water department right away and told them we have a river out here," she said.

Mother and son will go to trial in murder of Detroit teen London Thomas

A mother and son have been bound overfor trial in connection with the murder of Detroit teen London Thomas, a judge ruled Friday.

Watch Brett Kast's video report: Mother and son will go to trial in murder of Detroit teen London Thomas

Last October, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy charged 23-year-old Jalen Pendergrass of Inkster and 49-year-old Charla Pendergrass of Clawson in connection with Thomas' killing. In her Friday ruling from the bench following the preliminary hearing, Judge Sabrina Johnson bound both defendants over on charges of First Degree Murder, Felony Murder, Unlawful Imprisonment, and Tampering with Evidence.

In October, Jalen was remanded to jail, and Charla was given a $5 million cash bond.

"Just so happy and praise for this moment because it's long overdue," Thomas' father, Cedric Salisbury, said at the time. "We all knew that they did something, and we're just happy that the light has been shone, and thankful."

Prosecutors say that Thomas was Jalen Pendergrass' girlfriend.

"I want justice for my granddaughter. I want them to get the maximum penalty they can get for my granddaughter, " said Jestina Martin, Thomas' grandmother.

On April 5, prosecutors say Thomas was reported missing to the Inkster Police Department. She was last seen around 4 a.m. when she was allegedly dropped off at Jalen Pendergrass' house.

Inkster police, Detroit police, the FBI and Michigan State Police began investigating, and on April 26, Thomas' body was found in an SUV in Southfield that had reportedly been parked there for two weeks.

Prosecutors said that a male friend of Charla Pendergrass contacted Inkster police on April 26. He told prosecutors that Charla Pendergrass called him and asked him to transport a sealed plastic bin.

Police say that he received and placed the bin in an SUV on Millard Street in Southfield on April 11, the same SUV where Thomas' body was found.

"This is a case where the evidence, I believe, will be abundant that both defendants but in particular Ms. Charla Pendergrass engaged in an extended campaign to lie to the police, lie to law enforcement to cover up her actions," said Dominic Degrazia, Wayne County assistant prosecuting attorney.

"The evidence shows that Defendants Jaylen and Charla Pendergrass allegedly committed the homicide of Ms. London Thomas," prosecutors said when the charges were announced.

I am proud of the excellent work that has been done in this case. It has taken countless hours of investigation, and diligent work by the Michigan State Police, the Detroit Police Department, and the FBI. As a result of that work, we have been able to charge and bring the perpetrators of this cruel and deadly crime to justice, Worthy said in a statement.

Jalen Pendergrass was arrested and charged in connection to a previous case, and Charla Pendergrass was previously arrested on charges of lying to a peace officer, but those charges were later dismissed.

"Hopefully, they did a thorough investigation, and maybe that's why it took so long, and we can move forward and wrap this up so my daughter can rest in peace now," Salisbury said.

"I don't sleep good at night since this happened 'cause I've been praying for justice," Martin said. "I miss her so much. I miss talking to my grandbaby because she always called me and was like grandma I love you, and I miss her. I got her pictured all over my house."

Their attorneys say both maintain their innocence and are expected to plead not guilty.

While it seems so many have wrested judgment and already arrived at the conclusion that he (Jalen) is responsible and that hes the killer, I hope people will let the evidence play itself out and respect the process," Jalen Pendergrass' attorney Adam Clements said.

"Sounds like the same recycled case from April when they couldn't prove anything then and I don't believe they will be able to prove anything now," Carla's attorney Terry L. Johnson said. "We've gone through this twice. We started out in this court, it was dismissed. We went out to Romulus, it was dismissed. And this case, we believe, at the end of the day, our clients will be shown to a jury to be not guilty."

Domestic violence call escalates into 3-hour + shooting spree in Port Huron, suspect found dead

A domestic violence call in Port Huron escalated into a three-hour shooting spree Thursday evening, leaving one person dead and at least one family displaced.

Watch Ruta Ulcinaite's video report: Domestic violence call escalates into 3-hour shooting spree in Port Huron

Port Huron police responded to a domestic violence call around 7:20 p.m. Thursday in the area of 26th Street and Nern Street on the city's south side. When officers arrived, they were met with gunfire from an 18-year-old suspect. St. Clair County Sheriff's Office assisted along with other agencies.

"We do believe that at some point he was aiming towards our officers," said Assistant Chief Jeremy Young of the Port Huron Police Department. ''They're trying to investigate and next thing you know, they're they're taking shots and they're running for cover. So things escalated very quickly."

Approximately 20 gunshots were fired over the course of about three hours. No officers were injured and none returned fire.

The suspect, now identified by police as Taquan Henderson, forced his way into a neighboring apartment unit after the initial domestic incident.

"He actually kicked through the wall to be able to gain access into their apartment," said Vanessa Hollopeter, whose family lives in the neighboring complex where Henderson continued shooting.

Police say Henderson continued shooting blindly out a front window of the second apartment. Hollopeter's family ran out of their home but not before nearly being struck by gunfire.

"Our youngest cousin, who's eight, had just left about 20 minutes before this happened. And our other youngest cousin that lives there literally had one come inches within in her face," Hollopeter said through tears.

Neighbors were put on shelter in place until the shooting ended.

"We were terrified. You know, turned off all the lights," said Kathy Pearson, who lives nearby.

Police found Henderson hours later with a self-inflicted gunshot wound via drone. He was pronounced dead.

Hollopeter's family is now displaced and living in a hotel after their home became a crime scene. She says the incident affected the entire community. A fundraiser has now been set up to help the family into other housing and get family members into counseling.

"This was so unfortunate on just even a community level and the families that are involved. And I think everybody's still trying to process and everybody's emotions are high, but this was traumatizing," Hollopeter said.

Port Huron police are continuing to investigate.
