In The Groove Pick of the Week: ‘You got time and I got money’ by Smerz

This is a love song that is absolutely stuck to my ribs.

If Smerz is new to you, know that it’s new to me, too — and probably a lot of other American listeners. Smerz is a Norwegian electronic music duo (Catharina Stoltenberg, Henriette Motzfeldt) based in Copenhagen, Denmark, and Oslo, Norway.

And this woozy, understated anthem is so damn good, I’ve already listened to it three times today (and counting). The lyrics are sensual with a dash of adolescent sweetness and a bit funny, too (“baby, can I see you naked / even though I love how you dress”).

Smerz have a new album, “Big City Life,” out on May 23 via Escho (which also puts out music from Astrid Sonne, who is in heavy rotation on In The Groove, too).

Listen to the In The Groove song of the week below.

Essential vinyl shops to visit in metro Detroit this Record Store Day

Each year, Record Store Day keeps getting bigger than the year before.

Since 2007, when a group of indie record shops decided they should have their own day, it’s become an international celebration of the brick-and-mortar shops that end up playing critical roles in cultural scenes — not just in Detroit — but well beyond.

Consider it a vinyl holiday. It’s a massive economic boon for those indie shops. Musicians make it easy — releasing new material, rare b-sides, re-issues of albums you never thought would be pressed again, you name it. In the shops themselves, in-store performances have become a standard.

The list of releases this year is massive. You can scope out the full list here.

WDET is doing its part to showcase the incredible independent record stores in and around the Motor City by offering an exclusive RSD member drawing!

Anyone who makes a gift to WDET via wdet.org/give on April 11 or April 12 will be automatically entered into the drawing to receive a swag bag filled with gift certificates from participating record stores, Third Man Records vinyl and more.*

And if you’re curious what record shops you should check out, we’ve made a list. And we’d love to see this list grow, so if you don’t see your favorite record store listed, drop us a line and let us know what we should add. We happily will extend it!

Listen: Ryan Patrick Hooper talks Record Store Day, WDET member drawing

Here’s a few of our favorites, plus picks we received from you:

*You must make a donation through wdet.org/give between 12 a.m. on April 11 and 11:59 p.m. on April 12 to be entered into the drawing. Winner will be notified on Monday, April 14, via telephone. For full WDET contest rules, visit wdet.org/rules

In The Groove: Daniel Villarreal performs live on WDET

What a dream to have percussionist and bandleader Daniel Villarreal live on WDET during In The Groove.

I was first introduced to Villarreal’s music via a friend in Chicago, where Villarreal and his band call home. After popping on my headphones, going for a long walk and listening to Villarreal’s excellent ‘Panamá 77’ album, I was hooked. The plot on how I could get him to Detroit to perform began!

Thankfully, our friends at Moondog Café solved that issue, booking Villarreal for a live set at their new venue.

And ahead of that performance in Detroit, Villarreal brought the band by the studio to perform a handful of tracks, including “Traveling With” (from his 2023 effort ‘Lados B’), the unreleased song “Bakers Dozen,” “Sunset Cliffs” (another ‘Lados B’ cut) plus “I Didn’t Expect That” from ‘Panamá 77.’

You’ll also hear an interview with Villarreal about his time playing in punk bands in Panama and how that translates to the abstract jazz he plays today.

Hear the performance and interview using the audio player above.

In The Groove Pick of the Week: ‘Jealous Boy’ by The Bug Club

Since I first heard The Bug Club not too long ago, I’ve been completely in love with their fast-and-loose sense of humor paired with great songwriting and guitar riffs (like, way above average tasty wasters — they used to be a blues group, so it makes sense).

They’ve got a new album coming out this year called “Very Human Features” on Sub Pop. And on our first taste of it — the single “Jealous Boy”— it’s very human stuff. Definitely a bit more mature and honest and from the heart than some of their other stuff, which doesn’t take anything away from previous works (like last year’s excellent “On The Intricate Inner Workings Of The System,” also via Sub Pop) but is certainly exciting to listen to some evolution from the duo.

On “Jealous Boy,” guitarist Sam Willmett and bassist Tilly Harris go back-to-back on vocals, and it makes for a splendid earworm.

Listen to the In The Groove song of the week below. Bug Club’s new album, “Very Human Features,” will be out this June via Sub Pop.

In The Groove: Beth Gibbons heading to Detroit, Bug Club get jealous, Karen Nyame KG stays hot

Obsession of the week is no doubt “Jealous Boy” by Bug Club, who are quickly becoming one of my favorite bands of the past couple years. They’re getting ready to drop a new album later this year, so they’ll be in heavy rotation no doubt. Karen Nyame KG’s excellent remix of Joshua Idehen’s “Tactics for Survival” stopped me dead in my tracks, too. Heavy on Portishead and their former lead singer Beth Gibbons, who will be bringing her solo record (and some Portishead selections) to the Masonic Cathedral Theatre on April 7. Enjoy!
