We waited 16 years for The Cure’s latest album — and it was well worth the wait. Fans and critics alike praised “Songs of a Lost World,” and it’s been in heavy rotation on In The Groove since its release.

Now, The Cure are extending the life of their latest release with a massive collection of remixes called “Remixes of a Lost World” (out June 13 via Fiction) from folks like Paul Oakenfold, Deftones lead singer Chino Moreno, Mogwai, Twilight Sad and Four Tet, who I’ll focus on today.

I love the way that Four Tet’s remix of “Alone” slowly lets this build, eventually bringing in Robert Smith’s vocals half-way through and keeping that wonderfully distorted guitar in the mix, like this wonderfully crunchy entity hovering above all the clean, warm chord changes.

Four Tet’s remix of “Alone” is one of the first tastes of this remix project and I wouldn’t be surprised if it turns out to be one of the best.

Starting off the show with brand new music from Madison McFerrin, who is getting ready to release her sophomore album “SCORPIO” in June. Plus a dose of J-Pop (Japanese pop) from Lamp and Mei Semones, and The Cure just announced a massive remix album with folks like Four Tet, Mogwai, Paul Oakenfold and others interpreting their songs from last year’s “Songs Of A Lost World” album.

Went hard on Mogwai today and their excellent new album “The Bad Fire” (plus some throwbacks from their catalog) ahead of their tour stop at St. Andrew’s Hall in Detroit.

Twenty years ago, I saw them at the same venue! I was underage, sneaking beers and a buddy got kicked out, but I managed to stay and finish the show. It was one of the best live shows I’ve ever seen and a completely cemented musical memory that I’ll never forget, so I’m really looking forward to that tonight.

If Smerz is new to you, know that it’s new to me, too — and probably a lot of other American listeners. Smerz is a Norwegian electronic music duo (Catharina Stoltenberg, Henriette Motzfeldt) based in Copenhagen, Denmark, and Oslo, Norway. 

And this woozy, understated anthem is so damn good, I’ve already listened to it three times today (and counting). The lyrics are sensual with a dash of adolescent sweetness and a bit funny, too (“baby, can I see you naked / even though I love how you dress”).

Each year, Record Store Day keeps getting bigger than the year before.

Since 2007, when a group of indie record shops decided they should have their own day, it’s become an international celebration of the brick-and-mortar shops that end up playing critical roles in cultural scenes — not just in Detroit — but well beyond.

Consider it a vinyl holiday. It’s a massive economic boon for those indie shops. Musicians make it easy — releasing new material, rare b-sides, re-issues of albums you never thought would be pressed again, you name it. In the shops themselves, in-store performances have become a standard.

What a dream to have percussionist and bandleader Daniel Villarreal live on WDET during In The Groove.

I was first introduced to Villarreal’s music via a friend in Chicago, where Villarreal and his band call home. After popping on my headphones, going for a long walk and listening to Villarreal’s excellent ‘Panamá 77’ album, I was hooked. The plot on how I could get him to Detroit to perform began!

Thankfully, our friends at Moondog Café solved that issue, booking Villarreal for a live set at their new venue.

And ahead of that performance in Detroit, Villarreal brought the band by the studio to perform a handful of tracks, including “Traveling With” (from his 2023 effort ‘Lados B’), the unreleased song “Bakers Dozen,” “Sunset Cliffs” (another ‘Lados B’ cut) plus “I Didn’t Expect That” from ‘Panamá 77.’

You’ll also hear an interview with Villarreal about his time playing in punk bands in Panama and how that translates to the abstract jazz he plays today.

Since I first heard The Bug Club not too long ago, I’ve been completely in love with their fast-and-loose sense of humor paired with great songwriting and guitar riffs (like, way above average tasty wasters — they used to be a blues group, so it makes sense).

They’ve got a new album coming out this year called “Very Human Features” on Sub Pop. And on our first taste of it — the single “Jealous Boy”— it’s very human stuff. Definitely a bit more mature and honest and from the heart than some of their other stuff, which doesn’t take anything away from previous works (like last year’s excellent “On The Intricate Inner Workings Of The System,” also via Sub Pop) but is certainly exciting to listen to some evolution from the duo.

On “Jealous Boy,” guitarist Sam Willmett and bassist Tilly Harris go back-to-back on vocals, and it makes for a splendid earworm.

They’re getting ready to drop a new album later this year, so they’ll be in heavy rotation no doubt. A major opera star is under the spotlight at the Detroit Opera this weekend. 

Anthony Roth Costanzo is a decorated counter-tenor singer who will play the lead in “Rinaldo.” The 18th century opera by Handel is getting a contemporary update, told through the lens of a child’s fantasy in a contemporary pediatric ward. 

It follows a trend at Detroit Opera to find new ways to present old operas. The last two shows of “Rinaldo” are on Friday and Sunday. 

WDET’s Ryan Patrick Hooper (host of In The Groove weekdays noon to 3 p.m.) spoke with Costanzo about the story behind “Rinaldo” and the power of opera in 2025.
