Faith Cabalum, a Rochester High School graduate and recent Michigan State University graduate, won first place in the Multimedia Narrative Video Storytelling Competition of the 2024-2025 Hearst Journalism Awards Program.
Cabalum received the award for her film “Over the Years: a film about the human perspective of aging.”
Cabalum graduated from MSU School of Journalism in December 2024 and is currently a freelance video editor for Bleacher Report. While a MSU student, she worked as a video intern for MSU football.
With her award, she receives a $3,000 scholarship and qualifies for the Hearst National Multimedia Championship in June. Her film has also placed in more than 16 other film festivals around the world, according to a news release.
The Hearst Journalism Awards Program supports college-level journalism education by awarding scholarships to outstanding students and providing matching grants to their schools. For more information, visit www.hearstawards.org.

Karen Philbrick of Oxford was named as the Chief People and Culture Executive for the Detroit Zoological Society (DZS), a nonprofit that operates the Detroit Zoo and Belle Isle Nature Center.
Philbrick previously served as vice president of human resources at Troy-based Populus Group, where she supported more than 300 full-time employees and 5,000 contingent workers across the United States.
In the newly created role as Chief People and Culture Executive at DZS, Philbrick will lead the human resources team and oversee and assess the organization’s culture, leadership practices and development systems to attract, retain and develop talent.
Philbrick holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Central Michigan University and a Senior Professional in Human Resources certification from the HR Certification Institute. Philbrick is in the process of obtaining a Master of Science in human resources management, strategy and leadership from Michigan State University.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced appointments to state boards and commissions Jan. 9, that include three Oakland County residents.
• Deidre Lambert-Bounds of Troy, co-owner of Ignite Social Media, LLC and Carusele Media, was reappointed to the Michigan Gaming Control Board, to represent Independents for a term, Jan. 9, 2025-Dec. 31, 2028.
Lambert-Bounds serves on the executive boards of the Sphinx Organization, International Women’s Forum, and the Michigan Partnership for Equity and Opportunity. Bounds attended Wayne State University.
The Michigan Gaming Control Board provides Detroit commercial casinos gaming operations licensing and regulation and licenses and regulates online gaming and sports betting operators.
• Jonathan Bischoff of Lake Orion, chief operating officer at New Horizons Rehabilitation Services, Inc. was appointed to the Michigan Council for Rehabilitation Services as a member who represents community rehabilitation program service providers for a term, Jan. 9, 2025-Dec. 31, 2026. Bischoff succeeds Brent Mikulski, who resigned.
Bischoff has worked as a vocational rehabilitation specialist for Michigan Rehabilitation Services and is also a certified rehabilitation counselor and a licensed professional counselor.
Bischoff holds an associate’s degree in accounting from Baker College, a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism from Michigan State University, and a Master of Arts in rehabilitation counseling from Michigan State University.
The Michigan Council for Rehabilitation Services reviews, analyzes, and advises Michigan’s rehabilitation programs and services.
• Jayne DeBoer-Rowse, a registered nurse at the Oakland County Health Department, was reappointed to represent a registered nurse for the Public Health Advisory Council for a term, Jan. 9, 2025-Nov. 1, 2028.
DeBoer-Rowse earned an Associate of Applied Science in nursing, criminal justice, and law enforcement from Oakland Community College and a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from the University of Michigan.
The Public Health Advisory Council serves in an advisory capacity to the governor and the director of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.
