Oakland Literacy Council names Laurie Weeks as executive director

Laurie Weeks of Rochester Hills has been named executive director of Oakland Literacy Council, effective January 2025.

Weeks succeeds Lisa Machesky, the former executive director since 2015. During Machesky’s tenure, adult learning programs expanded from basic reading and English language learning (ESL) to include math, GED, digital literacy, and workforce training, according to a news release.

Weeks joined Oakland Literacy Council in 2015 as a volunteer tutor and joined the staff in 2018. Most recently, she has been serving as program director. Previously she was a journalist for the Cleveland Plain Dealer and Dow Jones News Service. She also taught composition and served as a writing and ESL tutor at Oakland Community College.

Weeks has a Master of Fine Arts in Writing from Spalding University and a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of Michigan.

Oakland Literacy Council provides basic literacy, numeracy, English language, and GED instruction to Oakland County adults. The office was relocated to downtown Pontiac in 2023.

Multiple students attended the awards program in Frankenmuth, Oct. 11, while the rest of the students cheered virtually from the classroom, according to a news release from Farmington Public Schools.

Keep Michigan Beautiful, Inc. (KMB), a Keep America Beautiful affiliate, is a non-profit, educational public service organization with a goal to promote beautification, recycling, and anti-littering. KMB hosts an annual awards program that recognizes programs, projects, and activities that substantially contribute to all aspects of beautification.

Mrs. Harris’s class started the process for the award last year when the students began their persuasive essay unit. The students started off writing essays on why their ideas needed to be implemented and requesting permission to implement them.

The students approached local coffee shop owners to deliver the essays and ask if they could decorate coffee sleeves with uplifting messages. They also wrote letters to their principal requesting permission for flash mobs during school arrival and dismissal, and requesting permission to deliver daily announcements to encourage students to use kind words and actions. They also requested approval to paint a mural in the lunchroom.
