A Detroit educator recently told a congressional committee he is “terrified” at what a second Trump term as president could bring for America’s public schools. Rodney Fresh, a high school social studies teacher in Detroit, said parts of the Republican agenda appear to call for dismantling the public education system.

States are required to conduct regular voter list maintenance to ensure the rolls are accurate. But a new Michigan State University study suggests the state’s process may disproportionately target underrepresented and lower-income communities. Purging voter rolls typically means removing inactive voters, or those who have died or relocated.

The battle between social conservatives and Michigan libraries to remove certain books from the shelves is becoming increasingly political as the November elections draw near. A Michigan Library Association poll shows more than three-quarters of Michiganders oppose censorship of library books but the public filed 47 complaints in 2023. Debbie Mikula, executive director of the association, said in most cases, such bans would violate the First Amendment.
