The nine finalists have been announced for the North American Car, Truck and Utility Vehicle of Year (NACTOY) awards.

Those awards will be announced at the 2025 Detroit Auto Show. We will stream the results of the awards live as they are announced at the Auto Show.

These vehicles were voted on 50 automotive journalists across the U.S. and Canada. Jurors will evaluate the finalist vehicles in the coming weeks before the Auto Show announcement.

The live larvae of a rare fruit fly was intercepted by U.S. Customs and Border Protection earlier this year, according to the department's Office of Public Affairs.

The larvae was seized off of a traveler arriving from Italy with fresh caper flowers who customs says refused to answer agriculture questions back in June and was referred for a baggage examination.

Officials identified the larvae as a caper fruit fly. Customs says it's only been seized one other time, 20 years ago, in Tampa, Florida.

Authorities say that the larvae belongs to a family of flies that includes the Mediterranean fruit fly, Oriental fruit fly, melon fly, and Mexican fruit fly, considered to be the most dangerous pests in the world.

After a dominant 2024 season, Tigers starting pitcher Tarik Skubal has won the AL Cy Young award, Major League Baseball announced on Wednesday evening. Skubal received all 30 first-place votes.

The left-handed pitcher led all American League pitchers in earned run average (2.39), wins (18) and strikeouts (228), considered the Triple Crown of pitching. Skubal started 31 games for the Tigers this past season, posting an 18-4 record while throwing 192.0 innings and posting a WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched). In his age-28 season, Skubal also earned his first All-Star appearance earlier this summer, being one of two Tigers invited to the Midsummer classic (Riley Greene).

Skubal led all Tigers in Fangraphs Wins Above Replacement (6.4), a key piece on a Detroit team that made an improbable run. On August 11, the Tigers were eight games under .500 (55-63) and had a 0.2 percent chance of making the playoffs on Fangraphs. From there, the Gritty Tigers got hot, winning 31 of their final 44 games to earn a Wild Card spot in the Playoffs.

Once in the postseason, Skubal and the 6-seed Tigers proceeded to sweep the 3-seed Houston Astros in the Wild Card round before falling to the Cleveland Guardians in the American League Divisional Series in five games. In his first postseason, Skubal pitched in three games, posting a 1-1 record while recording a 2.37 ERA, allowing 13 hits and five runs and striking out 20 batters.

Skubal is the third Tigers player to win the award this century, joining Justin Verlander (2011) and Max Scherzer (2013). He's the fifth player to win the award in franchise history, along with Willie Hernndez (1984) and Denny McLain (1968 & 1969)

Hailing from Seattle University, Skubal was drafted by the Tigers in the ninth round of the 2018 MLB June Amateur Draft. Skubal made his Major League debut in the COVID-19-shortened 2020 season. In five seasons, Skubal has posted a 41-31 record, a 3.37 ERA, and 648 strikeouts in 571.1 innings pitched.

Skubal is set to make $11,200,000 in 2025, and barring a new contract with the Tigers, he's set to become a free agent in 2027 when he turns 30.

All non-national Detroit Tigers games for the 2025 season will be broadcast on Fanduel Sports Network Detroit, the team and Diamond Sports Group announced.

This is part of a new linear and digital rights agreement, where Diamond will continue to be the exclusive local broadcast partner for the Detroit Tigers.

Last month, Diamond Sports Group, which owns the regional sports network, said it will drop several MLB teams who have contracts for the 2025 season, including the Tigers. This meant that the Tigers were technically without a broadcast partner for a little over six weeks.

In other words, everything will function as it did last season: pre-game coverage, in-game broadcasts and post-game coverage will be carried on Fanduel Sports Network, previously known as Bally Sports Detroit. Pistons and Red Wings games are broadcast on the same network. No matter what, the play-by-play broadcast will be handled by Jason Benetti, who is employed by the Tigers.

Details about how much the Tigers and Diamond Sports Group are making as part of this partnership were not disclosed to the media.

"We are excited to renew our longstanding partnership with the Tigers and to continue delivering broadcasts to passionate fans across Michigan," said David Preschlack, CEO of Diamond, in a statement. "Through comprehensive linear and digital offerings, our renewed partnership ensures that Tigers games reach fans across a variety of platforms, keeping them connected to the team they love."

Gas prices in the state of Michigan are up nine cents this week after last week's lowest prices since February, according to the latest data from AAA Michigan.

Michigan drivers are paying an average of $3.13 per gallon for regular unleaded fuel. That price is 21 cents lower than this time last month, and 18 cents less than this time last year.

Drivers are paying an average of $46 for a 15-gallon tank of gasoline, a discount of about $12 from 2023's highest price last August.

"Michigan gas prices continue the up and down rollercoaster, with the state average rising nine cents from last week," said Adrienne Woodland, spokesperson, AAA-The Auto Club Group. "If demand continues to increase, alongside tight gasoline stocks, then pump prices may continue to increase."

The Detroit Lions will be without linebacker Alex Anzalone for the next 6-8 weeks after the defender broke his forearm in Sunday's win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, Head Coach Dan Campbell told the media after the victory.

Anzalone has been one of the Lions' captains since coming to Detroit in 2021. He's appeared in 55 games for the Lions over the past four seasons, and in eight games this season, Anzalone has made 51 tackles, six tackles for a loss, four quarterback hits, four passes defensed and 1.0 sacks, all while handling a lot of the communication for the defense.

Anzalone isn't the only Lions linebacker recovering from injuries. The Lions have been without Derrick Barnes for almost two months now, after undergoing surgery to repair MCL and PCL tears. It's unclear when Barnes will be able to return to the field for Detroit.

After Sunday's 52-6 win, the Lions improve to 9-1, their best record through 10 games since 1934. They head to Indianapolis to take on Anthony Richardson and the Colts a week from today.

A 43-year-old Erie woman was killed after being struck by three separate cars in Bedford Township, and the Monroe County Sheriff's Office is searching for the driver of the first vehicle that struck her.

This happened around Midnight on Sunday morning on Smith Road, west of Telegraph Road, in Bedford Township.

Authorities tell us Erika Todd was walking eastbound near the shoulder of Smith Road when she was struck by a vehicle of unknown make and model. The driver of that vehicle fled the scene, and Todd fell between the east and westbound lanes of travel.

Todd was struck twice more after that; once by the driver of a Honda Accord heading westbound, and once by Nissan Sentra heading eastbound.

The woman struck was pronounced dead at the scene, while the drivers and passenger involved in those two crashes were not injured and released by police.

Police say that alcohol and speed are unknown factors regarding the initial crash. That crash remains under investigation by the Monroe County Sheriff's Office Traffic Services Division.
