Officers injured when Detroit police sergeant opened fire on them released from hospital

Two Detroit police officers who were injured after a fellow officer opened fire on them during an incident on the city's east side on Monday afternoon have been released from the hospital.

Monday at 2:26 p.m., Sgt. Jacob Moss a 13-year veteran of the department and an SRT officer called 911 from a building at Davison and St. Aubin and said he wanted to talk to a negotiator, had a gun and was about to kill himself.

7 Investigators report: DPD Sgt. wanted fellow officers, negotiator to respond to scene before he opened fire DPD sgt. wanted fellow officers, negotiator to respond to scene before he opened fire

He told the operator that he wanted his fellow SRT officers to respond. The call lasted more than 30 minutes.

Moss was shooting in the air with a high-powered rifle, and the responding officers retreated to their vehicle.

That's when Moss walked to the back of the vehicle and opened fire, shooting it multiple times. One officer was shot in the leg and another in the thigh. They returned fire.

By the end, Moss was dead after opening fire on two responding officers, grazing one and striking another.

He had just returned to active duty status after being off medical leave.

During a Monday evening news conference, Chief James White said that the officer had a serious generative condition but had returned to full duty on Oct. 3. He was also in uniform when he was shot.

Sources say the sergeant told the 911 operator that the department did not care about what officers like him were going through, that he suffered back pain and felt like he was not supported.

Detroit Police Chief James White named new CEO of Detroit Wayne Integrated Health Network

Detroit Police Chief James White has been hired as the new CEO of the Detroit Wayne Integrated Health Network.

At Wednesday's DWIHN board meeting, all members present voted for him, except for one abstention.

"I am very humbled and honored for this board's trust in me. I look forward to this journey ahead. I know it will be challenging, but I'm excited. We have a good team here. I'm excited to roll up my sleeves and make an impact on mental health," White said at the meeting after he was appointed.

Last month, White confirmed that he was applying to be the new CEO. On Monday, the CEO search committee heard from White and another finalist and recommended the full board hire White.

Speaking to our Sarah Michals after the meeting, White talked about why he was interested in the role.

"Mental health has no boundaries and borders, as we've just seen in our own police department," White said, referencing the shooting of two officers by another officer having a mental episode. "It's a lot to be done in the world of mental health, and I'm excited to be part of it."

See more from his interview after the meeting in the video below DPD Chief James White speaks after being appointed new DWIHN CEO

In September, he told our Carolyn Clifford that he will step down from his role as chief if he got the job. It's not clear when White would officially step down from the department.

"Its an extremely important role at a critical time for Detroit and Wayne County. We continue to have a mental health crisis in our community that needs to be addressed at multiple levels," White said in a statement last month.

White was appointed chief on June 1, 2021, and was officially confirmed by Detroit City Council on Sept. 21, 2021. He took over after former Detroit Police Chief James Craig retired.

Before becoming chief, White had led the Michigan Department of Civil Rights, and returned to the department where he had been an assistant chief since 2009.

According to DPD, White joined the department in January 1996 and served in a variety of leadership positions during his tenure with the department.

He's a Detroit native and graduated from Wayne State University and Central Michigan University, where he became a licensed mental health counselor.

In July, DWIHN's board named Manny Singla as interim CEO after former CEO Eric Doeh announced he was stepping down in June. The organization then began a national search for a new CEO.

DWIHN provides health services for more than 120,000 people in Detroit and Wayne County.

White has been a huge advocate for deploying mental health experts to scenes, which is something Detroiters like Sandra Turner-Handy say must continue. She admits she fears losing momentum if White takes another role.

Change in leadership creates a problem of trust in relationship building, Turner-Handy said. "A lot of what goes on is from mental health challenges.

Slotkin opened with statements first, introducing herself as a third-generation Michigander.

She explained that her service to the community began on 9/11 when she knew her life was going to change. She said she got recruited by the CIA and worked for both a Democratic and Republican president.

I believe in my bones that we need a strong and growing middle class, she said as part of the focal point of her opening statement.

Slotkin said she was looking forward to the debate and hoped for a civil discussion.

Mike Rogers thanked Slotkin for being at the debate as part of his opening statement.

"Are you better off than you were four years ago?" Rogers asked, getting into the why behind his push to run. "The simple answer is absolutely not."

Rogers said he recently talked to a mom of four, who in tears, told him she had to go to a food pantry to feed her children.

The policies coming out of Washington D.C. have been crushing to our families, he said.

He also talked about auto workers across the state telling him EV mandates are killing their future and killing their jobs.

He said it's his goal to get busy on the very first day.

"I look forward to having your vote, I look forward to having a discussion here this evening," he said.

Question 1: How would your economic policies help working families in Michigan?

Mike Rogers, Elissa Slotkin debate economic policies for Michigan families

The first question focused on the economy and helping people throughout the State of Michigan. In fact, a study found that 81% of registered voters say the economy will be very important when it comes to their vote.

Rogers was first to answer the question and said that if he were a senator, there would be things they need to do very quickly and his experience would help.

He focused on what he said were the trillions of dollars in wasteful spending by the Biden Administration with support from Slotkin.

He said a few things need to be done: Energy independence, undoing the regulation and curtailing spending to get the economy back on track.

Slotkin responded and said the economy is the top issue she hears about on the campaign trail. She said there are three specific things she would do as a senator:

Bring supply chains and manufacturing back to the U.S. Attack costs that are major parts of the budget Focus on the tax policy that supports and promotes a strong middle-class

Rogers rebutted and said thats where he and Slotkin differ, saying that voting for increased taxes on the middle class doesnt help them. However, Slotkin responded and said that Rogers voted against middle-class tax cuts.

The most important thing we need to do is be honest and attack the biggest things in peoples budgets, she said.

Question 2: Are we investing too much in EVs and battery plants?

Elissa Slotkin and Mike Rogers debate on EV and battery plant investments

The second question focused on EV and battery plants and asked if the country is investing too much in them as America competes with China.

Slotkin responded saying the kind of car that people drive does not matter to her, adding that she lives on a farm off a dirt road and driving an EV is not something shes personally looking into in the near future. But, she said she wants Michigan residents to make the next generation of vehicles instead of China.

Right now, everyone knows China is eating our lunch on these kind of vehicles, she said. And America knows we have not always gotten it right when it comes to seeing that next generation of vehicles.

Slotkin said Michigan residents building the next generation of vehicles will save auto jobs. She said about 700 jobs in her district in the Lansing area were saved at a plant due to upgrades being made.

I dont care what you want to drive, but I want to build them, she said.

Rogers started his response by saying, What a candidate says and what they do in their office for the last five years (is) really, really important.

He said Slotkin has voted for an EV mandate several times.

Im telling you, its just ruining our car industry, Rogers said.

He said thousands of auto dealers wrote a letter to the Biden administration to let them know theyre killing the car business and to stop the EV mandates.

He said its wrong that Chinese technology is being promoted in America.

Lets go to hybrids. People are buying them. You dont have to mandate that they drive them, Rogers said.

In Slotkins rebuttal, she said there is no EV mandate and again said it does not matter to her what kind of car people drive. She said Rogers claims to care about American manufacturing but doesnt want to compete against China.

In his rebuttal, Rogers said 29,000 manufacturing jobs have been lost since Slotkin has been in office. He added that more jobs would be lost with EV mandates and that America can make more hybrid vehicles.

Question 3: As a United States senator, if elected, will you authorize more budget spending on two international conflicts where there is no cease-fire and no clear resolution in sight?

Elissa Slotkin and Mike Rogers debate international conflicts

A hot topic among many Michiganders has been the ongoing conflicts around the world, including both the Israel-Gaza War and the Russia-Ukraine War.

Rogers first answered the question by talking about the events of Oct. 7, 2023, when Hamas invaded Irasel, calling it the most brutal terrorist attack, maybe ever.

He said that a ceasefire cannot be reached until the Israeli hostages return home, and then a conversation can be had.

Hamas doesnt want that. They want to continue to fight in Israel, Rogers said.

He then turned his focus to Iran and the funding they have done to several groups in the Middle East.

When asked again if hed authorize more spending, he said hed make sure we support Israel and then do a lend-lease program with Ukraine.

Slotkin also focused much of her answer on Iran and talked about how she sees the need for America to be a world leader.

"Obviously whats going on in Israel is deeply, deeply painful. We need a ceasefire. We need a negotiated ceasefire where hostages come home where we go into a different phase of this conflict, she said. Iran has deeply complicated that by firing ballistic missiles.

On Ukraine, Slotkin said that the U.S. has a responsibility to defend democracy and arm the Ukrainians.

During the rebuttals, Rogers talked about how Slotkin worked on the Iran Nuclear Deal and was part of several bad decisions, while Slotkin focused on her service in the Middle East and mentioned Rogers vote to authorize a war in Iraq.

Question 4: How do you plan to address abortion and reproductive rights?

Michigan U.S. Senate Debate: Rogers, Slotkin on reproductive rights

Slotkin went first in this question round. She said she did not support overturning Roe.

For me, I am crystal clear: Mr. Rogers has voted for every bill, every ban, every restriction on abortion that came in front of him for 20 straight years, said Slotkin.

She accused Rogers of changing his position to not upset voters.

Do not trust him on this issue, she said.

Rogers said it is the most heart-wrenching decision a woman would ever have to make and that its a decision that is best made with her family, with her partner.

Rogers accused Slotkin of misrepresenting his positions on the issue.

The state of Michigan and the people of Michigan went to the polls and voted. They voted to make abortion legal and they put it a part of their constitution, our constitution. So I wont do anything when I go back to the United States Senate to undo the vote of the people and their position, he said.

Slotkin in her rebuttal talked about his voting record, calling it not a misrepresentation but the way he voted.

I am so sick of people who dont understand womens health, who dont understand reproductive rights, said Slotkin.

Rogers in his rebuttal reinforced that he will respect the vote of the people.

He then pivoted to talk about Title IV, accusing Slotkin of not protecting girls in sports because of her position on Title IV.

Question 5: How would you enhance border security and improve the legal immigration system?

Mike Rogers and Elissa Slotkin debate on border security and the legal immigration system

This question focused on border security and the legal immigration system, asking both candidates about the policies theyd propose to improve them.

Rogers said reinforcing the remain-in-Mexico policy should be at the top of the list, saying it absolutely has to happen.

He said people being able to stay in the U.S. when they apply leaves the border wide open and brings in criminals, drugs and human trafficking.

You can see the problems everywhere. Matter of fact, the sheriff of Oakland County was just talking about another series of raids by illegal immigrants last night in Oakland County, Rogers said.

He said the border and legal immigration is a problem we have to deal with. He ended saying the problem cant be addressed until the border is more secure.

Slotkin she has experience protecting the country in her previous work as a CIA officer and Pentagon official.

I have done more border legislation than any member of Congress, Democrat or Republican, in the state of Michigan because no ones proud of whats going on at the Southern border, Slotkin said.

She said whats happening at the border is a symptom of a broken immigration system.

Slotkin said every country needs to know who is crossing their borders, adding that more needs to be done in the U.S.

She said lawmakers from across the aisle in the Senate were working on a compromising bill that Rogers was against it.

They would rather have immigration and border as a political issue than actually do the real work and get things done, she said.

In Rogers rebuttal, he talked about the bill Slotkin mentioned that he voted against. He said he was against it in a bipartisan way and it was a terrible bill and millions of illegal immigrants would be allowed into the country.

That is nonsense. That is a nonstarter, he said.

Slotkin in her rebuttal said the people who work at the borders in Michigan endorsed the bill.

Do you know better than they do about how to secure a border? Slotkin said.

She said lawmakers should he working together to secure the border, and thats what Americans expect.

She said while working at the Pentagon, if she did not want to do something for political reasons, she would have been fired.

Question 6: Do you believe America needs stricter gun laws? Yes, or no? And why?Β

Rogers & Slotkin debate if the U.S. needs stricter gun laws

Slotkin was the first to respond about the need for stricter gun laws with a quick Yes.

She talked about how she grew up with guns, learning with her father, shooting skeet and target practice with her brothers, calling it part of Michigans culture.

This idea that we cant go after the No. 1 killer of children in America is broken, Slotkin said. While Mr. Rogers was off in Florida, I was representing this district, where we had not one, but two school shootings in my district Oxford High School and Michigan State University, she said.

Slotkin talked about having to explain PTSD to a 14-year-old who was in his classroom when another student opened fire.

To me, we have to, as Democrats and Republicans, gun owners and non-gun owners, go after the No. 1 killer of our children in our communities in our schools, by suicide, by accident, she said.

Rogers responded by saying that the country needs to enforce the gun laws that we currently have, and also deal with mental health issues happening in our schools.

This generation of Americans is under mental duress and distress like I have never seen before. It means that were going to have to come together on how we get ahead of these problems. Banning guns isnt going to do it, Rogers said.

He also said that the two shootings Slotkin mentioned were by handguns, while everyone always talks about the other kinds of guns.

We need to get at the root of the problem mental health. If we dont tackle this mental health issue, were going to be in trouble, he said.

During rebuttal, Slotkin once again reiterated that guns are the No. 1 killer of children in the country, and said her opponent, Rogers, doesnt want to do anything about it. She mentioned his 100% rating with the gun lobby and said he doesnt want to lose campaign donations.

Rogers responded by saying with Slotkins passion, she wouldve introduced a series of bills in Congress, but did not.

Ive been in law enforcement for a big chunk of my life. I was an FBI agent, I worked the streets. I understand what victims are and how we get at this problem. The way we do it is through constructive dialogue with these schools, with mental health, Rogers said.

You can watch their full responses in the video above.

Question 7: How would you improve Michigans K-12 education system?

Michigan U.S. Senate Debate: Rogers, Slotkin on improving Michigan K-12 education system

Rogers had the first shot at this question, saying he could spend an hour talking about this issue.

This to me may be the biggest civil rights issue of our generation, he said.

He said he supports reading programs with intensive tutoring to help students get to their grade level when it comes to their reading abilities.

Slotkin said its the responsibility of any leader to make sure the next generation gets educated.

To me, the federal government is responsible for a lot of funding to make sure that we get our schools fully funded, said Slotkin.

She also talked about low teacher pay.

I am a believer in public education Mr. Rogers and I may differ on this, she said.

She said one of Rogers biggest supporters is Betsy DeVos.

Rogers rebutted by saying he went to public schools and his dad was a shop teacher, and said Slotkin went to an elite private school.

He also accused Slotkin of talking about everything else besides the topic at hand, saying he didnt know how DeVos had anything to do with them trying to prove education for our kids.

You can watch their full responses in the video above.

Question 8 - This question was from Leena A. from Flushing. As health care costs continue to rise, many Americans struggle to meet basic medical needs What ideas would you support or propose to attain an affordable health care system while maintaining high-quality medical care.

Rogers & Slotkin debate the rising cost of healthcare

Slotkin was the first to respond, talking about how this is a personal issue for her. She said her mother passed away from ovarian cancer in 2011 and she didnt have health insurance. She said they found out about her diagnosis and helped her declare bankruptcy in the same week.

I dont have to imagine what I would do on this issue, I have done it, she said.

Slotkin talked about the work she has done to allow Medicare to negotiate drug prices, saying that before, Medicare was prohibited from doing that.

Why? Because people like Mike Rogers voted for it five times. He voted for it 5 times. How is it possible to vote against Medicare negotiation to bring down the price? she said.

Rogers then talked about how its also a personal issue for him, being diagnosed with cancer at the age of 19 and also dealing with his fathers kidney cancer.

During his response, Rogers discussed that the bill also still has expensive prices, and that the United States is supporting the rest of the world when it comes to research and development and cost of drugs.

We should not be paying for foreign governments' medicine when it comes to prescription drugs, Rogers said.

During the rebuttal, Slotkin called Rogers response rich and again reiterated his votes against Medicare negotiating drug prices.

Rogers said during his rebuttal to look at prices that have gone up in the last six years while Slotkin was in office.

You can watch their full responses in the video above.

Question 9: What legislation will you offer to strengthen social security?

Michigan U.S. Senate Debate: Rogers, Slotkin on social security

Rogers took the first shot at this question, saying its important to strengthen and protect social security going forward.

He talked about his parents and how they counted on it in retirement.

If we are ever going to solve social security, were going to have to have a bipartisan commission that actually sits down and goes through the numbers, said Rogers.

He said his opponent had five years to do something and accused her of doing nothing.

Slotkin opened her response to the question by saying the senior citizens of the state can know exactly what theyre going to get with Mike Rogers.

She said he voted to privatize or cut back Social Security and Medicare over a dozen times.

Look at it, its just an open record, she said.

We dont have to guess what Mike Rogers will do in the seat, he has shown us who he is over and over and over again.

She accused him of having donors swaying his vote.

Rogers fired back at Slotkin during his rebuttal, accusing her of dishonesty and telling her she should be ashamed of herself.

Im telling you whats happening right now, people are afraid for their future in this state, they cant afford groceries and you know who gave them all of that? My opponent in the last five years, she said.

He said he wants to go to Washington to fix it.

Slotkin doubled down on referencing Rogers voting record.

This is not trying to scare anyone other than to outline his record, she said. Just own your record, Mike, man.

You can watch their full responses in the video above.

Question 10: How would you address the increase in climate-related disasters?

Rogers & Slotkin debate addressing climate change

Climate change is something that has impacted the Great Lakes and Michigan, and we asked both candidates about it.

Slotkin said that while we havent been hit as bad as other places, were still seeing the changes in our state.

I believe in climate change and that its real and we need to do something about it, Slotkin said. For me, we also know were going to need more energy.

Slotkin said that shed take an all-of-the-above approach, investing in traditional sources, natural gas, wind, solar and nuclear.

All of those things help us maintain our independence but increase the amount of energy we know were going to need, she said.

Rogers also said that its an important issue for him as well, and that Slotkin has had an election-year conversion to being for all of the above.

I believe we can get there if were smart, Rogers said about addressing climate change.

He said there shouldnt be EV mandates, and that they should instead focus on modular nuclear reactors to try and get the electric grid ready.

He also said that hybrid vehicles, built in the State of Michigan, would help the climate and autoworkers.

If we do all of these things, we can get to a better climate, he said.

Slotkin, during her rebuttal, said that she and Rogers have different records and feelings on protecting the Great Lakes. She said its her No. 1 issue and that shes worked to pass many bills protecting them.

Rogers said that you can focus on protecting the Great Lakes and having a better electric grid, but not with big government mandates.

Question 11: How would you address the rising cost of higher education & would you forgive student loan debt?

Mike Rogers and Elissa Slotkin debate on the rising cost of higher education

This question focused on higher education and asked the candidates if theyre for or against forgiving student loan debt and howd theyd address lower the cost. According to the Education Data Initiative, 14% of Michigan residents have student loan debt, with the average amount being $35,790. The data shows nationwide, only 18 other states and the District of Columbia have higher college debt than Michigan.

Rogers said the cost is a huge problem for all generations but especially now. He said he doesnt think someone else should pay for a persons debt in school. However, he said he believes it can be worked off through working a job that the country needs.

We have a desperate need for school counselors. Lets make sure if you have that debt, you spend some time in a public school doing school counseling, you get relief on your student debt, he said.

Rogers said that joining the military could be another option for working to pay off student loan debt, adding that a military class hasnt been recruited in the last four years.

Lets not just do it by giving you a check. Lets find a way that you can give back to your country and then we can help you in that way, Rogers said.

Slotkin said student loans should be capped at 2.5%. She said students are taking out loans with interest in the double digits.

She talked about how generations are in massive debt. She said decades ago, the state was covering most of the cost of tuition and that has since reversed.

And theyre living under that debt for the rest of their lives, she said. I think that going to school is different than building a deck on your house. Its an investment in society.

She agreed with Rogers that there should be a way to get tuition reduced by serving in a job that is much needed for the country.

Question 12: With rising partisan divide, the spread of misinformation and growing incivility in political discourse, what specific steps would you take to encourage bipartisan cooperation, safeguard democracy, and promote respectful dialogue both in Congress and among your constituents?

Slotkin & Rogers address how they can encourage bipartisanship

Slotkin answered first, talking about her national security background where she said you work with people for years and it doesnt matter who they voted for.

For me, civility, decency and respect between parties is a positive thing. We want two healthy parties that debate the role of government in our lives, thts how it should be, Slotkin said.

She said that this period of instability starts with defending democracy and that every person must support the democracy we have.

She said she has a real problem with misinformation and disinformation, and she barricaded herself in her office on Jan. 6.

I think everyone has the responsibility to support free and fair elections, Slotkin said, adding that she will respect the winner.

During Rogers answer, he talked about his work as the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, working alongside a Democratic vice chair on several items.

That takes leadership, it takes effort, it takes a lot of work, he said.

During the rebuttal, Slotkin said that 2014 Mike Rogers was happy to be bipartisan, but 2024 Mike Rogers isnt.

He sits next to Mr. Trump as he spreads misinformation and disinformation. I want the 2014 Mike Rogers back, she said.

Rogers said that 2014 Mike Rogers is still here, but whats different is that gas prices, grocery prices, energy prices and more are up.

2 Detroit police officers shot on city's east side, suspect dead

Two Detroit police officers were shot on the city's east side on Monday afternoon, police confirmed to 7 News Detroit. The suspect is dead.

Detroit Police Chief James White confirmed later Monday afternoon that the suspect was a 45-year-old man who had been with the department for 13 years.

Hear the chief and the mayor talk about the incident in the video below: Police chief and mayor provide update after two officers were shot by another officer

According to White, dispatch received a call around 2:36 p.m. and officers arrived on scene quickly. The suspect was off-duty and was threatening to commit suicide, and was reportedly asking for what is known as suicide-by-cop.

"Tragically we are not immune to mental crises. Our officers deal with this every single day," White said.

White said that he was shooting in the air with a high-powered rifle, and the responding officers retreated to their vehicle.

That's when the suspect walked to the back of the vehicle and opened fire, shooting it multiple times. One officer was shot in the leg and another in the thigh. They returned fire, killing the suspect. Both officers are in stable condition.

White said the officer was part of the special response team,Β known as SRT, an elite unit that serves like the department's SWAT team.

Sources: Suspect in shooting of 2 Detroit cops was an active DPD officer Sources: Suspect in shooting of 2 Detroit cops was an active DPD officer

7 News Detroit is not naming the officer, but we have learned that he rose to the rank of sergeant. He had just returned to active duty status after being off medical leave.

White said that the officer had a serious generative condition but had returned to full duty on Oct. 3. He was also in uniform when he was shot.

White said that the suspect had the full support of his unit, and from what White understands, returning to the unit was a positive thing for him.

Sources say the sergeant told the 911 operator that the department did not care about what officers like him were going through, that he suffered back pain and felt like he was not supported.

When asked about that, White said that the officer said a lot of things when he was on scene, but some of it didn't line up as he was in a mental health crisis.

Second suspect arrested in connection to murder of Rochester Hills man by fake DTE workers

The Oakland County Sheriff's Office said the second suspect wanted in connection to the murder of a Rochester Hills man last week has been arrested.

In an update posted on social media on Monday afternoon, the sheriff's office said their fugitive apprehension team located the suspect traveling in Plymouth Township. He was taken into custody without incident.

I continue to be super proud of our team and their tireless efforts to pursue the suspects and take them off the street as quickly as possible, Sheriff Michael Bouchard said in a statement. I thank our local, state, and federal partners for all their work. We continue to work every detail and expect the defendants to be held fully accountable for their heinous actions.

The first suspect was arrested in Shreveport, Louisiana on Saturday.

The Oakland County Sheriff's Office announced via social media that Carlos Hernandez has been charged with murder, among other charges, in regards to this incident. According to a press release, Hernandez has been charged by prosecutors with felony murder and two counts of unlawful imprisonment. If convicted, Hernandez faces life in prison.

Warren police say two officers in a fully marked car were traveling southbound on Schoenherr when they struck a white Dodge Durango that was turning westbound onto Prospect from Schoenherr. At this point, officers have not said which driver is considered at fault.

Both the driver and the passenger of the Durango were pronounced deceased following the crash. They have been identified as 34-year-old Cedric Hayden and 33-year-old DeJuan Pettis. Family members tell 7 Action News the men had completed their morning shifts at Chrysler at the time of the accident.

"He was on his way home ... to his two daughters, he's got two daughters," said the cousin of Cedric Hayden.

Both officers were also injured in the crash. The officer in the passenger seat sustained critical injuries, including several broken bones and head trauma. He underwent extensive surgery Monday. The officer who was driving was also taken to the hospital in critical condition. Both remain hospitalized in stable condition.

Warren police are also attempting to squash rumors and speculation related to the crash. They say at no time were the "officers engaged in a pursuit of the white Dodge Durango or any other vehicle when the crash occurred" and that while a break-in at a business and vehicle pursuit did occur nearby a few hours after the crash, "investigators are confident that Hayden and Pettis were not suspects in any business break-ins currently under investigation by the Warren Police Department. Moreover, investigators are certain that the Dodge was legally registered to Pettis and thus was not considered or investigated as a stolen vehicle."

"I had the pleasure of knowing Declan, having visited with him and his sister, Georgia, in front of their home many times, especially on hot summer afternoons for a lemonade. He had great potential academically, athletically (as one of the top runners in the area) and socially as a part of the fabric and DNA of Northville," said Mayor Turnbull in the letter to the community.

Carter family photo, shared by City of Northville

Declan Carter, a sixth grader at Our Lady of Victory School in Northville, was the son of a Northville City Council leader, the mayor writes, encouraging the community to support the Carter family.

"It is up to us to keep Declans spirit and memory alive in our hearts and from this day forward, to always have the Carter family in our prayers. All of our Northville staff who are appointed and elected are like a family. A loss for one is felt by all, along with the rest of our close-knit community," he wrote.

We spoke to Mayor Turnbull directly on Friday. He tells us the Northville community is in mourning after the tragedy.

"Were emotional and it hurts a lot," he said. "Hug those around you, hug those that you love today, you never know what tomorrow will bring."

According to the Livingston County Sheriffs Office, the 12-year-old was killed after a tree fell on him at the Howell Nature Center Thursday afternoon.

Officials say the tree struck the 12-year-old boy in the head. Were told the boy was critically injured and later died at the hospital.

The boy was at the facility for an overnight field trip.

Sheriff Michael Murphy says chaperones were teaching the students how to make a fire when they heard loud cracking. Members of the group took off running when they heard the sound, and the 20-foot tall tree with a rotted trunk fell on the boy, hitting him on the head.

He was airlifted to Mott Children's Hospital by the University of Michigan's Survival Flight in critical condition before later passing away from his injuries.

I have no words other than it's a tragic accident that just makes absolutely no sense," Murphy said.

Residents fear it may have been an old, decaying tree that came down. Diane Casler lives in the area and says she sees many of those.

"It happens, but its periodically," she said. Theres some big old trees."

The school has released the following statement about the incident:

As you may have heard, one of our sixth-grade students was seriously injured today in an accident during the classs overnight field trip to the Howell Nature Center. The student has been airlifted to a local hospital for treatment. Our prayers are with the student and family as they navigate this very difficult situation. As this incident occurred in front of other students, the decision was made to cancel the rest of the field trip so students could return home to their families. All parents of students on the trip have been contacted. We have been working with the Archdiocese of Detroit Catholic Schools Department to coordinate counseling services for any of our students who may be impacted by this news, particularly those in the sixth grade. Please know I will pass along any updates the family is comfortable sharing. Beyond that, we ask you to join our school in respecting their need for privacy and sensitivity.

Howell Nature Center CEO Tina Bruce has released the following statement about the incident:

Our hearts break and we are deeply saddened by the incident that occurred here at Howell Nature Center. Our thoughts and prayers are with the child and their family during this difficult time. At this moment, we are gathering all the facts and working closely with the authorities and our staff to understand what happened today. We will provide more information as soon as it becomes available. Thank you for your understanding and patience.

Michigan Teamsters endorses Harris-Walz campaign in presidential race

The Michigan Teamsters union announced Wednesday evening that its endorsing the Harris-Walz campaign in the presidential race.

Michigan Teamsters President Kevin Moore sent out a letter pledging strong support for the Harris-Walz campaign.

It comes as the international Teamsters union declined to endorse a presidential candidate for the first time in nearly three decades.

Watch our full interview with Moore in the video player below: Full interview: Michigan Teamsters president shares why union is endorsing Harris-Walz

It says neither Democrat Kamala Harris nor Republican Donald Trump were able to make serious commitments to ensure the interests of working people are put before big business.

Moore told us why Michigan Teamsters is taking a stand.

In Michigan, we understand this is a blue wall state, Moore said. "Weve seen four years of Donald Trump. Its the same old rhetoric, and were not going back. And Tim Walz and Kamala Harris gave us a vision for all people, working class people, not just Teamsters, not just unions

The Michigan Republican Party says the international Teamsters' own internal polling speaks for itself, with members choosing Trump by a margin of nearly 2 to 1. The MIGOP sent us the following statement:

"The internal Teamsters' poll speaks volumes. Rank and file Teamsters prefer President Trump because of his dedication to pro-worker policies and understanding that the Teamsters are the backbone of our nation's economy. That's why 59% of Teamsters support President Trump and why they'll send him to victory in November!" - Team Trump Michigan Communications Director Victoria LaCivita

Farmington Hills man charged after allegedly firing shots at homes & officers in barricade situation

A Farmington Hills man has been charged after firing shots at police officers, police cars and homes in a barricade situation from over the weekend.

These charges stem from an incident that happened this past weekend (Sunday, Sept. 15), with officers responding to a domestic violence call in the area of Middlebelt and 12 Mile around noon. The caller said that she had been assaulted and her kids were still inside the house.

When officers arrived, they say Dejuan Evans, 32, pointed a rifle at them and shot towards them, hitting homes and police cars. Officials say Evans proceeded to barricade himself in the home with two young kids. The kids ultimately escaped before Evans was shot by an OCSO SWAT sniper. Law enforcement rendered medical aid on him before taking him into custody.

I commend the quick thinking of law enforcement in bringing this extremely dangerous situation to an end. My offices top priority is public safety, and we will prosecute individuals who threaten the safety of our community and the lives of others, including children and law enforcement officers, to the fullest extent of the law.
