WARREN – Jay’den Williams admits that his bedroom walls are getting littered with wrestling memorabilia and most of it is items he has earned.

The Roseville senior 165-pounder, ranked first in the state, brought home some more poster brackets and a medal to add to his growing collection Saturday at Warren Cousino High School.

Williams – who is 37-1 for the season and 186-4 for his stellar four-year career – recorded a 20-3, technical fall victory over Rochester Adams’ Dominic Beccari in the finals at the Division 1 Individual Regional.

“I have too many,” laughed Williams, a three-time state finalist and a sate champion as a junior. I don’t have room anymore. Let’s see – I have four from (Macomb County), four from districts, four from regionals and one from (the state finals).”

Williams was one of 14 regional winners Saturday at Cousino, as standout wrestlers tangled for some eight hours to determine state qualifiers. The top four individuals in each weight class advance to the MHSAA Division 1 state finals March 6-7 at Ford Field in Detroit.

Rochester Adams’ Deacon Morgan will be joining Williams and 55 others from the Cousino regional at the state finals in two weeks and he was impressive ripping through the field in the 144-pound weight class. Last year’s state runner-up has been ranked in the top three in the state and his aggressive fast-paced style helped him record a 19-3, technical fall victory over fellow state-ranked opponent Lucas Harper from Macomb Dakota. 

“I try my best to keep the pace. I just keep my head in the game and keep working and be relentless,” said Morgan. “I do keep up the pace and try to wear my opponent down.”

With last year’s state champion now in college, the door is open for Morgan this season.

“Last year I was second in the state, so the goal is still to win a state championship,” he added.

Rochester Stoney Creek produced one champion, as Jawad Bazzi outlasted Romeo four-sport star Owen Perry 7-3 in the finals at 150. Romeo produced five finalists and tied Adams for the lead with three champions.

Warren Mott had a pair of champions on the day. John Kaminski recorded a 13-5 major decision win over Dax Fegley of Troy in the 157-pound finals. Two weight classes later, Ethan Drozdowski emerged as the 175-pound champ when he defeated Fraser’s Mitchell Nash.

Romeo’s Tommy Jaynes’ quest for glory in the 190-pound division continued, as he added three more wins Saturday to give home 153 for his career and ended his day with a 17-2 technical fall win over Darnel Boyd of Roseville.

“This is the next step,” said Jaynes, a state runner-up last season who is 49-1 this season. “I just have to keep pushing, eating right and manage my nutrition. But I don have to thank God. He gives me the ability to be able to go out there and do this. I just need to keep working hard and remain focused on the goal.”

Adams’ Maxim Vostryakov (215) improved to 39-9 on the season and his major decision victory of 9-1 over Troy’s Selah Houston gave him his first individual regional title.  He came three days after his team captured its first regional title since 1999. Adams’ John David Quinlan (126) prevailed with a 9-5 victory over Romeo’s Ethan Miller in the finals match.

“Personally, for me, I’ve had blast this season. I love my teammates and I love the fact that we won a team regional and that I was able to get one as an individual, too,” said Vostryakov. “Last year I lost in the blood rounds and I’m excited to be able to win today and also win that team regional in the same week.”

Quinlan is also a big part of the Adams success story this year.

“All of this is a great feeling. This team is a close as a team I’ve been one and to win a individual regional here today and to win team regionals earlier this week is amazing. We had three winners today and Max (Vostryakov) clinched it against Romeo the other day for us to win the first regional match,” noted Quinlan. “We have a lot of very good wrestlers and I think we had seven qualify today (for the state finals).”

Landon Cooke of Utica pinned Dearborn Fordson’s Mehdi Beydoun in 4:00 with a broken hand to improve to 22-3. Cooke was injured over the Christmas break with a broken bone in his right hand and missed nearly a month of action.

“I think this title is big because this will help with my seeding at state,” said Cooke. “I missed quite a bit of time and sat out nearly a month because I broke (a bone in) my hand. I won the county meet and then the injury happened right after Christmas. This is my second tournament win, but it is the regional and that’s important. My goal is to try to get up there (on the podium) and be All-State, maybe even top three.”

Sterling Heights Stevenson 106-pounder Anthony Bertollini won his finals match via forfeit after his opponent, Tristan Ciaramitaro of Chippewa Valley, picked up a minor injury at the end of his semifinals victory and opted out. Detroit Cass Tech’s Cyrus Woodberry edged Dearborn Fordson’s Rasoul Charafeddine 4-3 in the 113-pound title bout, while Roseville’s Branden Halsey (132) defeated Fraser’s Connor Wilson 9-4 to win his division.

Romeo sophomore Nico Adamo pinned Fraser’s Zack Courtney in 3:48 to win his 120-pound weight class, while his older brother Valentin Adamo captured a thrilling, 3-1 overtime victory over Dakota’s Carl Nihranz to end the marathon day. Both wrestlers are ranked in the top 10 in the state.

“I just had to trust myself and keep pushing out there,” said Valentine Adamo. “Carl is one of my wrestling partners (outside of high school) and we’re friends. We train together a lot and we’ve wrestled each other a couple of times before. I knew it would be a close match.”

The younger Adamo captured his first regional title.

“This should help me with my seeding. I want to be All-State and I think winning regionals is a big step towards that,” said Nico Adamo. “I didn’t start off the season too well. I only finished seventh at the county meet. I would love to have that day back. But I think that motivated me because I am wrestling a lot better now.”

HAZEL PARK – Sometimes Julius Wilson wants the ball in his hands.

Whenever Macomb L’Anse Creuse North needed something to happen Monday, it was usually the 6-foot-2 senior guard making something happen. Whether it’s a bucket, assist, rebound or extra pass, Wilson came through in the clutch on numerous times against Orchard Lake St. Mary’s at the D Zone Showcase at Hazel Park High School.

Wilson finished the night with 12 points, nine rebounds, three steals and three assists in leading the Crusaders to a 47-40 victory over St. Mary’s, which won a Division 1 state title in 2024.

The win moved L’Anse Creuse North to 5-1 in December – not a bad start for a team that lost most of its players to graduation and transfer.   

“We don’t have a lot of guys back,” admitted Wilson. “We lost three starters to graduation and another transferred. Plus, we had some key guys off our bench that graduated, too. So, I need to step up and lead this team.”

Wilson’s defense, experience, passing and shot-making abilities was on display at Hazel Park. After his team fell behind 14-10 after the first quarter, Wilson spearheaded a team defensive effort that turned the four-point deficit into a 25-20 lead at the half.

Wilson made a multitude of hustle plays in the frame, and a pair of assists helped L’Anse Creuse North close the period with a 12-2 run. In fact, it was his quick dime that set up Preston Ellul with a wide open three-pointer from the corner with 1:30 left in the quarter that gave the Crusaders a 25-19 advantage.

“We do have a young team, but he does a good job leading us and we need him to play that way,” said L’Anse Creuse North coach Kurt Wilson, Julius’ grandfather. “But I do like the way we fought back as a team after not playing so well in the first quarter. We played with a lot more energy in the second quarter than we did in the first quarter.”

Although St. Mary’s was able to trim the LCN lead down to 25-22 with 7:38 left in the third quarter and again whittled the lead down to 29-28 with 2:16 left in the frame on a jumper from Bella Matyus, the young Eaglets could never regain the lead in the second half.

L’Anse Creuse North closed the third stanza with a 7-2 run where sophomore forward James Zipay scored six points in the spurt. Wilson also scored four points with an assist in the quarter.

In the fourth quarter, St. Mary’s did close it down to 36-32 with 7:14 to play on two free throws from Kareem Pruitt, but that was as close as the Eaglets would get. The Crusaders went on a 10-3 run with Wilson’s driving layup gave LCN its largest lead at 47-35 with 1:45 remaining in the contest.

Arber Ljajcaj, a 6-foot-8 junior forward, added eight points, six rebounds, three blocks and two assists, while Zipay twined 11 points and Ellul finished with eight points for the Crusaders.

L’Anse Creuse North finished 12-for-14 from the foul line (85.8) to overcome just shooting 40.5 percent from the floor (17-for-42). The Crusaders did outrebound OLSM 30-23.

“We didn’t bring back a whole lot, so I’m pleased with our 5-1 start,” said Coach Wilson. “We brought back Julius – he’s our only returning starter. We brought back Arber, but he was only just a sophomore last year and he is playing a lot more this season. We have mostly a new team. We do have some things to work on and things to clean up. But I do like the fact that we are winning and learning as we win.”

St. Mary’s lost its top seven players from last year, including graduation loses and transfers, and the Eaglets lack some toughness according to coach Todd Covert.

“It’s a work in progress losing a lot of kids and we had some guys come over from football (late) and they’re still getting acclimated and in (basketball) shape. But I think one thing we are lacking is toughness and I think that was one thing we struggled with today,” said Covert. “I can deal with the missed shots and things like that, but they were just reaching in at time to get a rebound and that doesn’t work. (L’Anse Creuse North) does have some great size and you need to be tough and go in there to get rebounds and we didn’t really do that.”

ROCHESTER – Nathan Schilkey believes playing Utica Eisenhower in hockey is like picking your poison.

The Eagles have pure goal scorers galore and it’s hard to just defensively key in on one.

On Saturday night, it was Schilkey’s turn to shine, as the senior forward netted the natural hat trick and the Eagles played well defensively in recording a 4-2 triumph over host Rochester United in a battle of top 10 teams at Suburban Ice Rochester.

Eisenhower is ranked seventh in Division 1 and Rochester United is ranked fifth in Division 2.   

“It’s tough that we had to (forfeit) those first five games, but we still have a lot of goals for this season,” said Schilkey, who did not play high school hockey last season. “Myself and Joey Zelenak played (AAA hockey) last season but we’ve known all of the Eisenhower guys since we were little and we decided to play with them this year as seniors. We feel like we have a very good team and a lot of guys who can put the puck into the back of the net.”

Eisenhower has not technically lost out on the ice. The Eagles (3-5-0) had their first five games – all convincing wins – stripped away due to the usage of two ineligible players on a not-so-well-known MHSAA rule.

Eisenhower has simply regrouped with three straight wins and this was the first victory over a fellow state-ranked opponent this season.

“What a great high school hockey game,” beamed Eisenhower coach David Erwin. “I mean a very large crown, the atmosphere, the band, and two very talented hockey teams. Rochester United can play. They came at us and gave us a great battle. In terms of competition, I think they are the best team we’ve played this season and we knew going in that they would be tough. They are the top team in (the Oakland Activities Association).

“I can honestly say that our boys have moved on (from the forfeits),” continued Erwin. “We have come back and won (three) straight hockey games and nothing has changed in terms of our goals. We know we haven’t lost on the ice. We still want to go 27-0 and be playing down in Plymouth (for the D-1 Final Four and USA Hockey Arena). That’s our goal. We are a little thinner right now with injuries, but we still are having guys stepping up and doing a great job.”

Eisenhower (3-5-0) never trailed and took a 1-0 lead with 10:44 left in the first period. Schilkey was left open near the net and sent the puck home following a feed from Sebastian Kolodziej.

Rochester United (10-2-0) netted an equalizer early in the second period when Nolan Hizer scored his 11th goal of the season off a breakaway pass from Dylan Turnbull with 14:31 still remaining in the frame.

Just over seven minutes later, Schilkey blasted in a wrist shot from distance off the power play with 7:07 left in the period, set up by Zelanak and Bode Farr.

The close affair saw Rochester United again tie it up with just 42 ticks remaining in the second when Zach Brennan scored his ninth of the campaign to make it 2-2. Nolan Hiser (20 assists) and Mason McCaughtry had the helpers on the game-tying goal.

Rochester United let its guard down and Eisenhower made the hosts pay.

Schilkey scored his third goal of the evening while being left alone in front of the net and tucking in the game-winner with only seven seconds remaining in the second period off feeds from Zelenak and Farr.

Eisenhower played tight defense throughout and eventually scored an insurance goal with 4:38 left in the contest. Ryan Dex made it 4-2 after picking up a steal and sending home his shot past Rochester United goaltender Levi Joler.

The Eagles picked up another strong outing from senior goaltender Connor Holmes, who recorded 29 saves in 31 chances for Eisenhower. Joler had 36 stops in 40 chances for Rochester United, which has still scored 54 goals offensively this season while conceding 29 goals.

“This was a great game, we just came up a little bit short,” admitted Rochester United assistant coach Zach Lietz, who filled in the press conference for head coach Tucker Penning. “We knew Eisenhower has three really good (goal scorers) and a very good goalie. They are a tough team, and we feel like we also have a very good team. It was a close game and knew it would be.

“I thought the atmosphere was great, and this is the type of game that we want to play in, win or lose,” continued Lietz. “It was a top 10 matchup and something that we prepared for and this was a great test for them tonight. Obviously, only one team can win and unfortunately it went their way tonight. But I thought both teams played well .Now, we are just looking forward to next week and try to get back to (winning) games.”

The loss was Rochester United’s second defeat and first against a Michigan team this season. United also lost to Toledo (Ohio) St. Francis de Sales last month and that team is ranked in the top five in Ohio rankings.

CLARKSTON – Jen Bunting added some track practice to the volleyball practices at Oxford during recent weeks.

No, the Wildcats did not head out literally out to track around the football field, but Oxford did endure some serious increase of running at practices down the stretch.

There was a reason – conditioning in case Oxford had to endure some five-set matches in the postseason.

“We won the (Oakland Activities Association) White (Division) at 8-0. We swept every team we faced in the league,” said Bunting. “The girls hated me in practice for the last 3-4 weeks because I made them run miles and miles and miles. But it’s proven me right. I knew we would have to play some five-game matches in the tournament and here we are with two straight that have gone five games. The kids weren’t used to that all season. So, I made them run a lot in practice.” 

Oxford has had to play some lengthy games in the postseason as Bunting predicted. Five days after defeating Clarkston in five sets to win the school’s first district since 2002, Oxford ended up outlasting Clinton Township Chippewa Valley 3-2 Tuesday night in the first of two Division 1 regional semifinals matches at Clarkston High School. The Wildcats rallied past Clinton Township Chippewa Valley 25-11, 21-25, 23-25, 25-12, 15-12 in a match that took nearly 2.5-hours to complete.

While junior Sienna Austin ended the marathon match with a tip kill right by the net, it was the play of junior outside hitter Brenna Mirovsky, who recently made an oral commitment to play at nearby NCAA Division I Oakland University, who took over in the fourth and fifth sets.

“Coach just told me to move around the ball. Their defense started moving back so this really helped the team and I started to get more hits,” said Mirovsky of the late-game surge. “And also getting our team hyped, it really helped our momentum go.”

Mirovsky had four straight kills and five kills over the final eight points in the fourth set to help Oxford (27-12-5) force a Game 5. In that fifth set, Mirovsky added three more kills, as the Wildcats came back from an early 2-1 deficit to quickly build a commanding 12-4 lead in the set.

After Chippewa Valley closed to within 14-12, the Wildcats closed it out to advance to the regional finals for the first time since the 1990s. The Wildcats were knocked out by Utica Ford in three sets in the 2002 season, the last time they even played a regional game but that was in the regional semifinals.

This time around, Oxford is trying to stick around for a while, as the Wildcats will play in the regional finals Thursday at 7 p.m. at Clarkston. Oxford will face Romeo in the regional finals – a game between two teams not listed as honorable mention in the polls.

Mirovsky finished with 16 kills to pace Oxford. Senior Jess Romine led the way with assists, senior Tara Swanson anchored the back line and led the team with digs, and Austin and senior Ellasyn Glaz also had strong games attacking and with kills for Oxford.

Oxford also focused on keeping the ball away from Chippewa Valley senior Reagan Lesley, who is the Big Reds’ all-time leaders in kills.

“We told the girls to do the best you can to keep the ball away from her (Lesley),” said Bunting. “We did a good job at times, especially in the last two sets. But (Chippewa Valley) played incredible defense tonight. We had some amazing hits where we thought stuff was going down, but they dug it up. This ended up being an amazing five-set game and we found a way to win it. It was a great match, they made us push for it, made us earn it.”

Lesley still had 15 kills and sophomore Ava Creech added 10 kills for Chippewa Valley (30-11-5). Senior Samantha Mondalek added 18 digs for the Big Reds, who had four sophomores and two freshmen gain minutes this season.

Chippewa Valley won its first district this season since 2014 and still has a relatively young team with just three seniors. The Big Reds were involved in a five-set thriller for the second consecutive game but just came up short.

“We weren’t going out without a fight, that’s for sure,” said Chippewa Valley coach Chris Hull. “This was a great match. We didn’t give them any easy points. We went out there to see what we can do and we were up 2-1 and then they tied it at 2-2. We made them earn it in the fifth. I’m proud of them. We played them tough.

“I have to give them a lot of credit. They double-blocked Reagan just the way they should. They had to make adjustments and we made some adjustments,” added Hull. “When we were able to get around the block, they were there to clean it up. It was a good defensive game for both of us. They happened to score a little bit more than we did in that fifth set and that was it.”

YALE – Defending state champion Detroit County Day keeps cruising through the Division 2 state tournament.

The top-ranked Yellowjackets took down honorable mention Marysville, 25-17, 25-15, 25-13 in a Division 2 regional semifinals match at Yale High School.

Elise Hiemstra led Country Day with 14 kills, three aces and seven digs, while Payton Woodruff dished out 37 assists to pace the Yellowjackets.

Demi McCoy added nine kills and seven digs, Leah Green chipped in with seven kills and six blocks, and Sici Guerrant followed with six kills, three aces and three blocks for Country Day (20-8-1). 

Marysville, the Macomb Area Conference White Division finished 31-14-1. The Vikings, which feature nine seniors, just couldn’t keep pace against the defending state champs.

Country Day will face fellow state-ranked and powerhouse North Branch Thursday at 7 p.m. for the regional championship.

North Branch (41-8-0) outlasted fellow state powerhouse Pontiac Notre Dame Prep 25-19, 25-27, 25-18, 25-10. The Bronchos have won 13 straight matches.

Notre Dame Prep finishes 31-15-2.

Aubree Deshetsky was unstoppable with 31 kills,18 digs and two aces to pace North Branch. Hannah Thomas added 10 kills, three blocks, and four aces.

Allysse Deshetsky collected nine kills and two aces, Haley Henry led the defense with 22 digs, while Kylie Doherty collected 39 assists for the Bronchos, who entered the state tournament ranked second in Division 2.

BIRMINGHAM – Oftentimes, high school football playoffs games can be decided on a couple of key plays.

Birmingham Groves picked up two major plays Friday night and a lot of little ones in recording a 36-22 Division 2 district finals triumph over visiting Warren Cousino.

Jeremiah Whitley had an 85-yard rushing touchdown and Dominic Taylor added a 62-yard pick-six to go along with a sack and eight tackles in leading the Falcons to their sixth district title in program history.

It was Taylor’s interception returned to the endzone that broke the camel’s back, as Cousino was trying to put together a game-tying drive. 

“So basically we have been going over that all week about there passes. We have a great scout team – the whole team played great defense. And I just baited him (the quarterback) on that interception,” said Taylor, one of just three returning starters this season. “I just stayed there in the middle, caught the ball here, brought the ball to my chest and took it to the house. That was a game-changer.

“We might have lost a lot of guys that graduated. But our seniors have been together since we were sophomores and we had to realize the great guys leave – great classes leave and we knew we had to step up as seniors,” added Taylor. “We’ve been playing football long enough to step up. We want to make a name for ourselves and we wanted to win another district championship and go even further this season.”

After starting 2-3, the Falcons (8-3) have now won six straight games.

Veteran Groves coach Brendan Flaherty saw his young team really start to mature by mid-season and the Falcons have taken flight this year into the regional finals.

“Judah Skobie got that huge block (on the long) touchdown run by Whitley and Dominic had that interception returned for a touchdown. You talk about guys making big plays,” smiled Flaherty. “This was a tight football game and we knew they had some players. They are a great team. It’s the second round of the playoffs and there’s no weak teams at this stage. They’re all good teams now. Cousino tested our mettle a little bit and they are well-coached and I have a ton of respect for what they’ve been able to do.

“But our guys have matured a lot this season. We did start 2-3,” continued Flaherty. “I just think that these guys mostly had new roles this season and it took some time. But we made plays tonight that we might not have early in the season. We had those two long scores, had some nice drives, tipped some passes (in the secondary) and just did a lot of the little things it takes to win a great football game.”

Groves racked up 350 total yards in the slugfest Friday – 310 on the ground and 40 through the air – and had three rushing touchdowns, one passing touchdown and one interception for another score in downing the high-powered Patriots, who came in averaging 33.1 points a game.

The Falcons never trailed and advanced to the regional finals for the second straight year and sixth time since 2016. Groves – which won regional championships in 2016, 2018, 2022 and 2024 – will visit fellow powerhouse Detroit King for the regional title next weekend.

Groves went ahead for good when Whitley scored on a 6-yard run with 6:12 left in the third for a 29-22 advantage in the tight game.

With Cousino (7-4) driving as part of a 12-play series, it was Taylor who leapt in front of a Cousino receiver while quarterback Brick Sandridge was being hit and picked off the pass before racing 62 yards for the score and a commanding 36-22 lead with 1:46 still left in the third quarter.

The Groves defense made that 14-point lead stand down the stretch, as Cousino had its last two drives stall out on downs.

Cousino finished its best season in several years with a 7-4 record and a berth in the district finals. Coach Brandon Genette and his staff have quickly turned the program around with a respectable 24-16 record over four seasons (2022-2025).

Before then, Cousino finished 0-9 during the 2021 season and actually forfeited their last four games and scored just 42 points that season.

“The seniors were freshman when we started the rebuild and they stuck around to help us make the district finals this year,” said Gennette. “The previous four years before I got here, Cousino was just 3-31 in that time span. I can’t thank these seniors enough, really all four senior classes, for relaying our foundation and helping us become a very competitive team again. It’s been a long time.

“We lost to a very good Groves team with a lot of tradition. They were a play away from getting to the state finals last season and they are always making runs it seems,” added Gennette. “We knew this would be a tight game and I think it just boiled down to them making a couple of more plays than we did tonight. Hats off to them.”

On just the second play from scrimmage, Whitley broke a tackle at the line of scrimmage and also picked up a huge block from Scobie and raced 85 yards for the score and a 7-0 advantage, as Groves never trailed in the game.

After Cousino countered with a swift four-play drive capped by Daniel Carter’s 38-yard touchdown sprint, Groves went ahead again on its next drive.

The Falcons jolted ahead 15-7 with 6:10 still left in the first quarter when quarterback LeVelle Shannon hit Joshua Hammonds on a 15-yard strike down the middle and Whitley scored on the ensuing two-point conversion run.

The conversion was set up by an offsides call against Cousino.

The Patriots did claw to with 15-14 with 2:15 left in the first stanza when Sandridge scored on a 1-yard plunge.

Groves again took the lead when Whitley scored on a 5-yard touchdown sweep around left with 10:02 remaining in the second quarter and Gage Watters drilled his second extra point for the 22-14 halftime lead.

Cousino finally evened the score in the third quarter after a nine-play drive ended with Sandridge connecting with Julian Hayes with a 15-yard scoring toss where Hayes displayed his best version of shake and bake around a pair of defenders along the left since to tie the game at 22-22 with 9:42 remaining in the third frame.

That would be the last time the Patriots would score this season, as Cousino finished with a 353-212 scoring edge this season – the third time in four seasons the Patriots reached the postseason after years of misery.

Whitley finished with 25 carries for 238 yards and his three rushing touchdowns. Shannon finished 3-of-7 for 40 yards passing with six carries for 25 yards on the ground and his one touchdown run.

Hammonds had two catches for 35 yards and also recorded six tackles and two sacks for the Falcons. Taylor added a pass breakup to aid his strong night. Connor Eldredge and Kam Smith both chipped in with four tackles apiece for Groves.

Cousino still racked up 340 total yards on the night. LJ Hayes had eight catches for 101 yards and Sandridge was 17-for-36 passing for 204 yards, but his receivers dropped five passes and the Groves defense did a great job breaking up several passing plays in the secondary. Carter had 19 carries for 127 yards to lead Cousino’s running game.

MARYSVILLE – Marysville won the Macomb Area Conference Blue Division tournament title to earn a share of the overall crown with Utica.

The Vikings collected a team score of 415 at the play-six, count-four tournament at Marysville Golf Course on Tuesday, topping the seven-school field and winning the tournament by four strokes over Utica (419).

Utica finished 10-1 in dual matches to win that portion of the standings and finished up with 13 total points. Marysville finished second in dual matches but won the tournament to also finish up with 13 total points. 

St. Clair, third in dual at 9-3, finished third at the tournament (444), followed by Clawson (472), Fraser (501), Madison Heights Lamphere (501) and Port Huron (534).

St. Clair recorded 10 points to finish third in the overall standings, while Clawson, Fraser and Lamphere all finished with six points and to tie for fourth and Port Huron was seventh with just two points.

At the tournament, Clawson junior Joslynn Ramirez was medalist with an 83, while St. Clair senior Sofia Russel finished second with an 89. Marysville senior Samantha Allen claimed third with a 90, while Utica senior Dalaney O’Connor (101), Marysville sophomore Kaycie Zaunner (104), Utica senior Miley Reaves (104), Marysville junior Raegan Horan (106), Utica senior Cali Kaczmar (106), Utica senior Riley Burton (108), Lamphere senior Ava Denmark (110) and St. Clair junior Delaney McDonald (114) also finished in the top 10 in the medalist standings.

Marysville freshman Emma Hurley (115), St. Clair junior Ashlynn Stockwell (115), Fraser junior Hailey Beauchamp (119), Utica senior Violet Smith (121) and Clawson freshman Addie Reynolds (121) also finished in the top 15.

CHSL CENTRAL DIVISION >> Toledo (Ohio) St. Ursula Academy dominated the talent-rich CHSL Central Division this season and wrapped it all up with a conference championship.

St. Ursula won the conference tournament Tuesday at the Flint Golf Course, putting together a play-six, count-four team score of 305 to win in convincing fashion over many Michigan programs with storied histories.

Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook-Kingswood finished 15 strokes behind at 320, while Birmingham Marian (335), Macomb Lutheran North (354), Toledo Notre Dame Academy (354) and Farmington Hills Mercy (357) followed suit.

St. Ursula had three finishers in the top five, four in the top seven and six golfers in the top 15, with the last two finishers not even contributing to the team score.

St. Ursula senior Sydney Socha won the medalist title with a eve-par round of 72. Mercy junior Megan Guerrera was second (75) and St., Ursula junior Olivia Rodgers (76) and Cranbrook-Kingswood sophomore Sintine Charnelet tied for third (76). St. Ursula senior and Toledo Notre Dame Academy snior Macy Valentine tied for fifth (77), while St. Ursula freshman Mia McIntyre (80), Cranbrook-Kingswood junior Josie Vardenhaute (80), Cranbrook-Kingswood senior Sydney Behnke (81) and Marian senior Pippa Dawson (82) followed in the top 10.

Elsewhere, St. Ursula sophomore Kopelyn Kessler (83), Cranbrook-Kingswood senior Harlet Cortez (83), St. Ursula senior Kennedy Donnelly (84), Cranbrook-Kingswood senior Alina Vuan (84) and Marian junior Gabby Wenzel (84) were also top-15 finishers in the deep field of competitors.

Lutheran North was the sole Macomb County school at the event and were led by freshman Nina Hanley in 18th (86), seniors Gabby Cardenas (88) and Maria Fortuna (88) and senior Victoria Ratajczyk (92) who all finished in a competitive top 25.

WARREN – Sometimes soccer can boil down to finishing and not finishing scoring opportunities.

It’s that simple.

Novi Detroit Catholic Central only had eight shots on frame Thursday, but scored on four of them and ended up earning a 4-1 victory over host Warren De La Salle in Catholic High School League Central Division play.

The Shamrocks (7-2-2, 6-0-0), listed as honorable mention in the Division 1 polls, led 2-1 at the half before tacking on a pair of insurance tallies in the second half.

“We started off a little bit slow. But once we scored we were alright. We took advantage of a little bit of misfortune on them (with the two rebound goals). Their goalkeeper made the initial save but we followed (the shots) up and were able to score on them” noted Catholic Central coach Gene Pulice. “Thaier still has them doing a good job. And yes we did finish our opportunities tonight. I think it’s one of those things that if you can take the wind out of their sails a little. Bit. The first team to score helps you achieve that. They cut it down to 2-1 but we pulled it back a little bit in the second half with two more goals and started to get things done. “

More importantly, CC now had a two-game lead on Detroit U-D Jesuit and a three-game lead on De La Salle in the seven-school Central Division and are now comfortably in the driver’s seat in terms of winning the division and grabbing the No. 1 seed for the CHSL Bishop Tournament in October.

“We’re doing pretty good so far, and in the Catholic League they always pitch that we are one of the best leagues in the state out there. It’s a tough league and it’s a battle every game,” said Pulice. “Sometimes it’s better lucky than good. You have to respect all the teams in this league.”

Catholic Central scored the first two goals off of rebound opportunities. The first came with 24:12 still left in the first half when Luke Perry was near the doorstep to knock it home after Zachary Zahr’s first shot was knocked away by De La Salle backup goalkeeper Giovanni Vitale.

The Shamrocks scored the next goal in similar fashion when Grant Mooradian’s blast from the top of the box was knocked down by Vitale but this time it was Zahr in the right place at the right time to knock in the rebound with 19:51 remaining in the first half.

Andrew Corder finally got the Pilots untracked when he found some open real estate near the upper left corner of the box and uncorked a banger from 18 yards out with 17:27 left in the first half. It was Corder’s 21st goal of the season just one month into the campaign.

But Catholic Central had four opportunities in the second half and two were converted by Mooradian. The first came with 34:58 remaining in the game when Peters found Mooradian unmarked in the middle of the box and ripped a 14-yard banger into the net.

Mooradian later converted a penalty kick with 28:06 left to cap the scoring and open up a three-goal lead.

Defensively, Catholic Central did a great job on limiting Corder’s chances, allowing him only three shots on goal. Goalkeeper Jake Sievers turned aside a laser shot by Corder midway through the second half and finished with four saves for CC.

Catholic Central held a 12-11 overall shots advantage in the somewhat evenly- game and also had a 8-5 shots on goal advantage in the contest. De La Salle held a 4-2 edge off corners.

De La Salle, ranked third in the state in Division 2, slipped to 10-3-0 overall and 3-3-0 in league play. Although the Pilots are essentially out of the Central Division race and only Detroit U-D Jesuit can possible catch the Shamrocks.

“Hats off to CC. The better team won tonight. They outplayed us and scored on their opportunities,” said Thaier Mukhtar, whose team in the defending Division 2 state champion and reached the state semifinals in 2023. “They should win the (Central) and we can’t catch him. But there is still a lot for us to play for. We have to get better and get ready for the state tournament and try to go as far as we can. The ultimate goal is to win the state championship.

“This wasn’t one of our better games,” added Mukhtar. “We just got outplayed by CC tonight. We’ll bounce back.”
