WATCH: Runner who survived heart attack at 2024 Detroit Free Press marathon finishes final miles

One year after suffering a heart attack mid-race, a Kalamazoo runner finished the last few miles in the 2025 Detroit Free Press marathon, with Patrick Banderbush completing the marathon one year later.

Watch Patrick finish this year's race WATCH: Runner who survived heart attack at 2024 Detroit Free Press marathon finishes final miles

"I don't want to leave anything unfinished," Patrick told us before today's race. "Today is not about me, today is about all those folks that were involved with me being here today."

Patrick's heart attack last year happened at Mile 24. He was rushed to DMC Heart Hospital in Detroit where a team of medical professionals immediately sprang into action working to save him.

"We're just really thankful with Patrick that we were able to get him in time," said Dr. Anthony Tam, the Henry Ford doctor who helped save Patrick's life last year.

"I was looking at my watch and just comforting myself saying Im right where I want to be, I have an easy two miles left, and in less than an hour Ill be celebrating my 60th birthday with the family,'" he said last year.

Dr. Tam didn't witness Patrick cross the finish line since he was working a booth, but it was an emotional day for the doctor.

"I wanted to cry initially," Dr. Tam said. "They gave him his medal and now he gets to finish with his family, all the way to the finish line."

Patrick wants to run all 26.2 miles of the marathon again soon, once he gets clearance from doctors.

"Either in the spring or next year, I'll be running the full marathon again," Patrick said. "First one in my second life."

'We got to be better': Tigers POBO Scott Harris and manager A.J. Hinch reflect on 2025 season

After losing a 15-inning winner-take-all game with the Seattle Mariners, the Detroit Tigers were eliminated from the playoffs early Saturday morning.

The Tigers advanced to the American League Divisional Series after beating the Cleveland Guardians, the team that ended up winning the American League Central. The Tigers finished the regular season with an 87-75 record. Detroit had double-digit lead over their divisional foes for a large portion of the season, propelled by an impressive 38-21 start over the first three months of the season. Detroit's lead over the Guardians was up to 15.5 games before the Guardians overtook them in the division in the final week of the regular season.

7 News Detroit was in attendance for the Tigers final media availability of the 2025 season, with Tigers President of Baseball Operations Scott Harris and manager A.J. Hinch taking questions for about an hour.

FULL VIDEO: Tigers POBO Scott Harris and manager A.J. Hinch reflect on 2025 season FULL VIDEO: Tigers POBO Scott Harris and manager A.J. Hinch reflect on 2025 season

Below are some key quotes & takeaways from the press conference, which started off with Harris expressing remorse for the Tigers being eliminated.

"I wish we weren't here right now," Harris said in his opening statement. "We were really close to being in Toronto right now, but we're not."

Harris did address the collapse the team had in September, while acknowledging the Tigers did play well in the first five months of the season.

"We deserve the negative narratives that are swirling around this team," Harris said. "Any time you sequence the season the way we did, we deserve to have those questions, and I can't be naive to how we performed in September...we got to get better in a whole lot of areas."

When asked about the trade deadline, where the Tigers added five players, with only two of those players right-handed pitchers Kyle Finnegan and Rafael Montero being on the postseason rosters. Harris said he did not regret the deals made at the deadline, based on the performances of the players who were moved at the deadline.

"I don't think I've ever gone through a deadline completely satisfied with the results," Harris said. "I would tell you that the players that were most closely connected to us via the media would have cost us a player on our roster plus additional pieces or a top prospect plus additional pieces."

Harris and Hinch were asked about possible disappointment at the deadline, in not taking what would be perceived as big moves in free agency. Harris wants to look at what changed in their offense later in the season, and see if those offensive struggles were a "blip on the radar" or part of a larger trend to be concerned about. Harris said that if he had a chance to do it again, he would have tried to get ahead of the challenges Detroit's young hitters faced.

"I think the offensive performance down the stretch is a fair question on if we should have done more," Harris said, saying he has been reflecting on whether or not the team should have added a bat. "We had the eighth-best offense in baseball across five months...that's a team we could reasonably expect to be playing in Toronto right now.

The future of Tarik Skubal has been a talking point among the fanbase for more than a year now. Skubal, the reigning AL Cy Young winner, has been a big reason for the Tigers clinching a postseason berth. Across 31 starts this season, Skubal has put up a 13-6 record, posting a better ERA (2.21), a better WHIP (0.891), and more strikeouts (241) than his Cy Young-winning season. He has one year left on his current contract, and will be a hot commodity if he does hit free agency.

Harris said he could not comment on the future of Skubal as a Tiger or get into hypotheticals, but he did say that owner Chris Illitch will provide full support to do what is needed to keep this team as good as possible.

"Tarik is a Tiger, I hope he wins the Cy Young for the second consecutive year," Harris said. "It would be arrogant and tone-deaf of me to assume that we could do all this stuff without him...he's here and we're glad he's here."

Harris mentioned the following as two main areas of improvement that the organization will focus on in the field:

Why approach at the plate deteriorated as the season went along Contact hitting; Harris said the team "needs to move the ball in the big leagues more than we are

Harris did acknowledge that, after making the ALDS in two consecutive seasons, the expectations for this team have shifted. He mentioned that he's trying to make the environment as good as possible for young players to thrive.

"The expectations have changed around here," Harris said. "We're trying to play a six-month season instead of a seven-month season."

Harris and Hinch reiterated that Hinch, who has been extended with the Tigers twice, will be the man to lead this team long-term.

"I can't tell you enough how happy I am to be with the Detroit Tigers," Hinch said. "All of us are on board to bring a World Series here, and that's why I want to be here."

The exact terms of Hinch's contract were not disclosed, per a team policy that prohibits publicly talking about non-player contracts. Hinch also said a full discussion has not yet been had about the current coaching staff, with the manager praising the staff for "squeezing every win" out of this team.

Harris did stress the importance of walking the tightrope between staying competitive while also continuing to develop young players, stressing that he's not rushing young players to supplement the current young core.

"I think the trend-line of this organization is really important, and how we've done it is really important," Harris said. "That's not going to change, and we're going to stay on these development paths."

Schools close after water main break in Novi; boil water advisories issued

The City of Novi is dealing with a water main break on Thursday morning, which has caused nearby schools to close and boil water advisories to be issued.

The City said on Facebook that the break is on 14 Mile Road, just west of M5. The water main break is affecting Commerce Township, Walled Lake, Wixom and parts of Novi.

Watch our live coverage from the 8 a.m. show Live coverage of Water Main Break in Novi, including phone interview with Novi spokesperson

According to the city, the Great Lakes Water Authority experienced a break in a 42-inch transmission main, causing a large portion of Novi to lose water pressure. Crews are currently working to isolate the break.

"I took my brother to the airport at 6 a.m, I splashed cold water on my face, and the water worked just fine," Art Vuolo, a Novi resident, told us. "But by the time I came back, I went down the 14-Mile Road and it was fine around 7 a.m. It must have happened after then, because my phone blew up with Ring doorbell people saying 'what's going on? low water pressure?", everything from no water to low water pressureall the way to Walled Lake, no water, so this is fairly widespread."

A spokesperson for Henry Ford Health confirmed to 7 News Detroit that the Columbus Medical Center on 12 Mile is closed because of the water main break. That spokesperson told us that Henry Ford Hospital is using bottled water, but patient care is not impacted.

Until service is restored, areas of Novi highlighted in the photo above are under a boil water advisory. A GLWA crew is on site working to isolate the issue and restore service. There is no estimated time for repairs. Novi said once water service is restored, they have to test the system and receive two negative tests 24 hours apart to lift the advisory.

"If everyone can be patient with the situation, and as we work through this, we know there are communities being impacted but we are working with them to address it," said Pete Fromm, the Director of Water Transmission at Great Lakes Water Authority. "

2 dead after multiple vehicles catch fire in freeway crash in Novi

2 people are dead after a crash on I-96 where both vehicles caught fire, the Novi Police Department tells us.

We're told the crash happened around 2 a.m., on eastbound I-96 near Beck Road.

Investigators say that a vehicle had stopped on the road for vehicle issues when another driver crashed into that vehicle.

Both drivers passed away in the crash, with both vehicles catching fire.

This area of the freeway is currently closed as of 8:30 a.m., but police are working to re-open it within the next hour.

To avoid traffic caused by the crash, traffic reporter Ali Hoxie suggests drivers get off at Milford to eastbound Grand River Avenue, which runs parallel with northbound Novi Road, to continue onto the freeway.

Detroit Children's Museum set to re-open in December 2025 thanks to grant funding

After the pandemic forced its closure in 2020, the Detroit Children's Museum is reopening, according to an announcement from the Detroit Public Schools Community District Foundation (DPSCD Foundation).

According to the foundation, the museum is able to reopen its doors thanks to grant funding totaling just over $800,000, which the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity awarded the DPSCD Foundation.

The museum, which has been owned and operated by the school district, will be restored and re-imagined at its original address (6134 2nd Avenue).

After undergoing strife linked to the district's financial crisis in 2009, the museum had operated in a limited capacity for just over a decade (2009-2020).

This is a historic moment for Detroit, said Kerrie Mitchell Campbell-Mabins, President & CEO of the DPSCD Foundation, in a statement. The Childrens Museum has shaped generations of learners, and reopening its doors means reigniting that spark for thousands more. The states investment allows us to bring this vision to life, but keeping it alive will take all of us partners, families, and community leaders who believe in giving Detroit students the same world-class opportunities as any child, anywhere."

DPSCD students will get to experience the museum first in an exclusive preview period in October and November. After getting the feedback of the students, the DPSCD foundation says they plan to reopen the museum to the public in December 2025.
