On this week’s show, we heard new tracks by Craig Benedict Valentine Badynee, formerly of Pas/Cal, along with a new Allman Bros. cover by Jill Jack and a groovy pop song by Pesky Kid!

We had some in-studio guests, including Deadbeat Beat, who brought some new music to spin. We also talked about Detroit X Detroit happening this weekend with Danny VanZandt.

Deadbeat Beat’s new album and upcoming release party

Deadbeat Beat sprouted from a teenage friendship between drummer-vocalist Maria Nuccilli and guitarist-vocalist-songwriter Alex Glendenning, leaning into an intersection of garage rock drive and indie-pop catchiness. The band was rounded out by bassist Zak Frieling, who came from the Flint scene to join these high energy east siders as a power trio, releasing an album and touring fairly extensively.

There’s been new energy, though, over the last couple years, with the addition of Pete Steffy on keyboards and synthesizers. Steffy notably recorded Deadbeate Beat’s 2019 album “How Far,” but now he’s been an even more crucial component, as a full band member, to help create their latest, “From Here To Ohio.”

The band talked about the ideas and stories behind the album’s title, and it’s two new singles, one of which was exclusively premiered on the show tonight.

Deadbeat Beat also discussed moving away from the well-prepared-yet-quickly-executed style of basement recordings to the more deliberate process of working with celebrated engineer Chris Koltay at High Bias Studio.

Deadbeat Beat have their album release party at the Paris Bar on June 12, which will be followed up by some touring and some more high-profile gigs that they also detail during our interview.

Detroit X Detroit this Saturday

Also, the annual Detroit X Detroit Showcase is Saturday April 15, 2026 at the Loving Touch.

This is a super-fun concert with more than a dozen local bands doing short, high-energy cover sets of other notable Detroit and Michigan artists. These contemporary bands and songwriters can choose to do covers of icons like Stevie Wonder or Bob Seger, or they can select a set of later trailblazers like The White Stripes.

Singer-songwriter Danny VanZandt, who performs solo but also has a full band, will be doing a set of Seger covers, with his group, at the event.

On the show, I also spun a track by the artist, Annemarie Jo, who will be doing a set of Marvin Gaye covers.

In the middle of our interview, VanZandt treated us to a live cover of “Night Moves.”

This was a fun one! You’ll hear some jangly indie-rock set to pop-energy tempos with heart-on-the-sleeve emotional ruminations with Sock Jock, and then you’ll get intricate guitar stylings and sweet, groovy psych-rock rhythms with charming, pensive, and sometimes metaphysical lyrics with Waunband!

I’m honored and thrilled to have the opportunity to bring talented members from the local music scene, where we can hear their stories, get to know them, listen to some of their new songs off their latest records and hear them perform live! And the good vibes I see resonating from these artists when they come in to this studio feels emblematic of how vibrant and supportive our local music scene; that supportive energy extends to us, the listeners, the folks in the audience, too! Sock Jock’s self-made music joins metro Detroit’s scene

Taylor Brown aka Sock Jock is a talented singer-songwriter who has been playing music for most of her life, self-taught on every instrument she plays. She comes to us from North Carolina by-way-of Chicago, settling here after she wrapped up college at Purdue and released her first EP, “anothernovember.” 

Solid influential reference points for Brown would include Snail Mail, but you might also hear some Clairo and Soccer Mommy in there too. What’s rad about Brown, too, is that she self-produces and records her music, including her latest single, “Curtain.”

Brown shared how she initially chose this band name as a joke, intended to be temporary, but once one of her early singles went essentially viral and boosted her signal, she decided to embrace it.

We’ll also hear about how the last few years have led Brown to fall in love with the metro Detroit music scene, and we talk about upcoming shows where you can catch her live. During the show, she performed her song, “Sober,” live in-studio.

Waunband combines quirk and good company

Waunband is led by Jeremy Waun, a talented singer-songwriter who’s adjacent to, if reminiscent of, something we millennials used to call “freak-folk,” with a sound that feels warm and inviting, with narrative-rich lyrics and a vaguely classical-richness, but skewed with an appealing bit of quirkiness that might present itself in a turn of phrase, an aesthetic choice of tones, or even Waun’s own distinctive voice with its warbly high-arching hum.

Waun talked about starting out as a solo artist, but how it came to feel right to have a full band around him, particularly for the sense of camaraderie, as he’s known his mates for such a long time. The band includes Brad Potts on bass, Johnny Weeks on drums, and Steve Lofman on electric piano and synth.

Waunband releases their new album, “In These Lungs” this Saturday, with a release party that night at the Lexington Bar.

Also on the show this week, some new tracks to premiere, including, some experimental art-rock from Wolf Shambles, who are living somewhere between 90’s Tom Waits and 70’s Genesis—and honestly that doesn’t even come close. We also heard from the melodic indie-rockers Remnants, an ambient jazz project known as Yimes, and the latest from singer-songwriter Mike Ward!

The Hamtramck Blowout is a local music institution. It happens every year, (usually), on the first full weekend of March. It’s overwhelming and chaotic, makes you grin and go all wild-eyed; it’s fast, though not really that furious per se, and you have to make peace with the fact that you are not going to see every band that you want to—unless you believe in miracles.

Above all, the Blowout is vital. It nourishes the local music scene, it opens it up to newcomers in a stylishly slapdash way, and it gives everyone a chance to appraise the wide breadth of talent and variety of genres that are consistently percolating across practice spaces and dive bars in this region week to week. It’s had four slightly-to-moderately different iterations over nearly 30 years, but it keeps on going.

Wanna meet the local music ecosystem and dive right in? Blowout is your best opportunity! All that being said, this week on MI Local, I was joined in-studio by the dynamic hip-hop duo known as Passalacqua, comprised of emcees Blaksmith and Mister, who fatefully formed their ongoing project during a live performance at the 2010 Blowout.

On the show, Blaksmith (Brent Smith) and Mister (Bryan Lackner), talked about their interesting origin story, some of the nostalgia they have around their formative years together as collaborative artists, and then teased a bit about their upcoming set this Friday night at Blowout, where they’ll debut some new songs!

Singer-songwriter Michelle Held also joined me in-studio. Held has been on stages before, with a background in theater. She started writing poetry at a young age, inspired by so many verbose musical bards and troubadours such as Bob Dylan, but she actually started playing guitar at a later age—an anecdote she expounds upon during the interview.

You can hear it, and I certainly saw it firsthand, Held is an incredible guitar player, employing the intricate finger-picking style, and you can hear her perform two songs on the show this week, with her accompanying guitarist Mikey Abbasspour. Her voice is aching with emotion, it hits a heartbreaking vibrato, and her words poignantly pluck the heartstrings. Held performed her latest single, “Another Jane,” inspired by Jane Goodall, and an unreleased song, “Unresolved.”

In the third segment, I was joined by the prog-rock duo known as The Last War, with Drew Moore on guitar/vocals and Mile Pardo on drums/percussion, discussing their new EP, Smile, which came out last week. You can see them live, next weekend, at Small’s in Hamtramck.

Drew told us about his relocation from California to Detroit in 2023, where he fatefully met Miles and attained almost instantaneous musical and creative chemistry.

The Last War have released several singles over the last few years, including a slew of covers re-imagining some classics, but “Smile” is essentially their solid debut! Their repartee, on mic, is notably charming, so listen until the end. Plus they performed a live song from the new album, “The Kids,” complete with Pardo on bongos!

The sisters of Jackamo have been singing together their entire lives, and that will become evident immediately, once you hear them sing on this week’s MI Local.

Tessa and Alison Wiercioch were raised by artistic parents in a house full of music, from the record collection emanating from the HiFi to actual family members in their circle literally serenading throughout each room.

Soon, the sisters started singing together inside the house, in choir, and eventually in bands. They started playing and performing with guitarist Jimmmy Showers in 2018. Soon after, Jackamo was formed.

Over the last five years, they’ve been steadily releasing singles that showcase the sisters’ breathtaking sensibility for melody and dazzling natural ability to harmonize, weaving together a mix of Americana, folk, and indie-folk vibes, both sung from voices and strung with words that sound and feel wise beyond their years and quietly courageous in their tenderheartedness. Add in Showers’ amazing finger-picking style on guitar, and the occasional live accompanying ensemble, and you’ve got pure magic.

Jackamo spoke with me about finishing the recording of their debut album between that weird nexus of time between Christmas and New Years. They’re hoping to release it later this year, but in the meantime we can look ahead to the official release of its first single, “Judy,” which the band performed live on this week’s show.

Jackamo are performing this Saturday at the Shelter in Detroit, with Masha Marjieh and The Plushies. 

Also on this week’s show, in stylistic-harmony with Jackamo, I featured the new song from Michelle Held, “Another Jane,” which she called “…an ode to [anthropologist] Jane Goodall, turning toward what’s right in the world.”

We also heard a dreamy and spooky new instrumental from the visionary Via Mardot, imbued with her signature theremin, along with a new mixture of neo-soul and R&B from Chase Alan.

After two years of hosting this show, I think I can say, with a somewhat-earned sincerity, that this one felt like a classic MI Local! We had guests from Ypsilanti and Detroit, we talked about music, we heard some amazing live acoustic performances, and we also took a tour around the further edges of the state, out west to Grand Rapids, and up north to Traverse City and beyond to Marquette!

We started the show with new electro-pop from the west side of the Mitten, with Empress Eyes, followed-up by dreamy electronica from the U.P. from producer Kristof Alexander. We also got a sneak preview of new music coming from the Ypsilanti-alt-folk duo Fern Whale and some transcendent dream-pop from Hail Your Highness.

We looked ahead to some upcoming shows, too, including alt-folk singer-songwriter Spencer LaJoye coming up at The Ark in Ann Arbor at the end of the month.

Speaking of The Ark, though: that’s where one of our in-studio guests will be performing an album release party, next Sunday, Feb. 22. Matt Jones has been around the Ypsilanti music scene for more than 20 years, now, with his band The Reconstruction, which features several talented artists from that neck of the woods, including Misty Lyn Bergeron.

Jones and Bergeron joined us to discuss Jones’ new album, “The Good Life,” including the gap between this release and his most recent (2014’s “The Deep Enders”) as well as sharing the story behind two of the songs that they performed live, “That Ripping Sound,” and “All The Missing Names.”

After that, the Ethan Marc Band hung out to discuss their new album of high-energy indie-rock/alt-pop, titled “Stay This Way,” which has its album release party at the Magic Stick here in Detroit next Saturday, Feb. 21.

Lead singer-songwriter Ethan Marc discussed the band’s busy year, the strength of the band’s camaraderie and the excitement to release their second record inside of a year, while guitarist Michael Seger shared even more about the band’s noteworthy work ethic, including a series of intensive songwriting retreats at Airbnb’s across the state.

Before the night was out, the Ethan Marc Band performed live, with an acoustic version of their song, “Misbehaving,” off the forthcoming album “Stay This Way.” 

We’re at that point in winter where we really could use a good party! January lasted a year and dropped a lot of snow on us (and significantly dropped the temps), and now the groundhog has seen its shadow, so we’re left with the long trudging march toward…March. What we need is a laid back yet kinda wild extravaganza, or perhaps, if you will, a festival! With lots of live local music and art and, frankly, positive vibes.

Cut to: Sled Season. This Saturday night at the Tangent Gallery, the twangy indie-rock quartet known as Toboggan Man is partnering with étude Productions to arrange a lineup that features classes and workshops, an interactive art installation, live performances, local artisanal and food vendors, DJs, and a stylish themed photo booth experience.

But this is MI Local, so we’re naturally focusing on the live local music, like Toboggan Man and past WDET guests like Pia The Band, Rose St Germaine, and Checker, along with TY, New Entertainment, and Lee Cleveland & the Lefthand Band.

Toboggan Man formed during the wintertime a few years ago, which played into the naming of their band (it just beat out the next contender for a name, ‘Ski Lift Fist Fight’). Listen to the show and you’ll meet this charming band and hear a couple live renditions of their songs, a charmingly scrappy blend of garage-pop stomp and alt-country clamber through a sweetly smiling indie-frayed lens.

Before we get to the interview with Toboggan Man, you’ll hear new tracks from the local artists like the Detroit electronic duo ADULT., and the power pop maestro Nick Piunti, both of whom have new albums coming out this season. We also heard a dazzling electronic-acid-jazz track from Alice Sun, new noise-rock out of Ann Arbor from Dancers, and a pair of my favorite hip-hop artists, Leaf Erikson and Noveliss.

Meet Starlings! Or at least half of Starlings. My guests this week were Nick Chevillet (guitar/vocals), Adam Liles (guitar), and Darren Shelton, (keyboards). You can see Shelton on the far right, up top, who immediately joked that he “only has one look” when it comes to photos, otherwise, his energy is significantly mirthful, ebullient even, and certainly exuding lots of encouraging energy toward his bandmate, Liles (he’s the tallest one in the picture) just released his debut solo album “Slow Pony” this week.

During the last segment of this week’s show, I spoke with Liles about his new album, including debuting a song from it, “Heart Attack Machine.” Then Liles treated WDET listeners to a live acoustic version of another song, proper for these chilly winter nights, titled “Silver Letter.”

Liles has been in several bands over the last decade, including Pia The Band and The Indigo Curve, but he’s also been working on solo material, albeit a bit more quietly, for just as long, having released demos in the late 2010s, along with a solid single, “Ripcord.”

Chevillet shared a charming anecdote about how Liles came to join Starlings. This six-piece band grew out of a collaboration that Chevillet started, somewhat on a lark, with singer-songwriter Adam Padden. Chevillet and Padden were already well-acquainted after years of playing together in another indie-rock group, Handgrenades.

Starlings started as a bonding creative project during the quarantine days of Covid, when both Chevillet and Padden had just become new fathers and were eager to fill some of that precious quiet time when their newborns were napping; naturally, they filled it with songwriting.

Liles is a natural fit for Starlings, since Chevillet and Padden’s initial batch of songs matched his own sensibilities for propulsive mini-ballads of melodic brooding post-punk mixed with pedal-augmented guitar phrases, welded over sophisticated compositions that support and sweeten (or bitterly sweeten) the lilts of poetically heavyhearted lyrics.

Shelton had previously set up an impressive recording space Downriver, where Chevillet revealed he’s been working on a slew of new Starlings tracks for future recordings; their debut EP, “Try Hard Town,” was released last year. Liles, in turn, also admitted that while he’s eager to continue recording and performing with Starlings, he’s also got plenty of solo material that could fill a follow-up to” Slow Pony” soon.

Also on tonight’s show, I looked ahead to this weekend’s annual Ann Arbor Folk Festival, a fundraiser for that city’s musical mecca of roots music, The Ark. I featured tracks from two artists performing on Saturday at Hill Auditorium: the versatile Americana-folk-rock ensemble The Crane Wives, and Rabbitology, who weaves a heartwarmingly witchy brew of atmospheric folk that sounds like it’s building her up to be the inheritor of the torches of Kate Bush and Florence Welch.

Also on this week’s show, a track from Tony Mugg’s solo project, DUDE, a dazzlingly jazzy-indie-rock instrumental from Seth Bernard, and a swooning ballad from Annie Bacon. We even found some time to flash back to 2016’s world of local music releases, with two seemingly long-lost music projects known as Real Ghosts and The Good Things.

I’ve had this theory that local scenes go through waves or phases lasting about 7 years. Don’t ask me to do the math or show my work or explain the science—I’m just saying that it feels like a certain vibe solidifies amongst a current crop of highly active local musicians at a given time.

I don’t want to over elaborate my hackneyed outline on this, come find me and I’ll give you the full pitch for what might become a book (?) but suffice to say that 2005-2012 really felt like a bit of an era, a moment, a fantastic wave of local music and I wanted to tap into that a bit on this week’s show.

We flashed back to the year in local music, 2011, for a few reasons: Firstly, how is 2011 already 15 years ago? Secondly, with that time distance, now, it’s fascinating to listen back to what the local music scene sounded like “back then,” and interesting, too, that many of the artists I played tonight are still active today. 

We heard “No Silver” from Chris Bathgate’s “Salt Year”, “The North Side of the Road” from Timothy Monger’s “New Britton Sound,” and “In Line with the Brokenhearted,” the title track from The Blueflower’s 2011 full-length album.

We also heard some blasts from the past from groups that aren’t together or aren’t as visible, the former being Prussia, a long lost indie quirk-pop band that would please any fans of Animal Collective; and Zoos of Berlin, an absolutely sonically sumptuous art rock ensemble that still periodically releases new music even if they don’t perform live.

Along with those flashbacks, we heard brand new music from The Ethan Marc Band, from their new album, “Stay This Way,” along with a new operatic darkwave single from Crune, and a funky jam from Chirp, off their new album, “Torque.”

As often happens, I had a guest in-studio! Singer-songwriter Carmel Liburdi came by to promote three upcoming shows. One of them is tonight at the Ghostlight; Liburdi is performing at a variety show, dubbed ‘The Basement Show’, a comedic variety show blending storytellers, stand-up, and sometimes music!

Liburdi is also going to be at the Paris Bar this Thursday, Jan. 15 for a line up of live music benefiting the ambitious facilitation of the expansive and immersive House of Tarot group show happening at the Boyer-Campbell building in Detroit’s Milwaukee-Junction Neighborhood, on Jan. 31 to Feb. 1.

Liburdi contributed an art installation to last year’s inaugural House of Tarot show, and will be back again, contributing to another piece and performing live.

On MI Local, you’ll often hear in-person interviews with a wide range of local artists. We also get quite a bit of live music on the air!

Many of my guests have been stopping by to talk about an upcoming album release, or maybe a big concert they have coming up. While WDET listeners are able to hear some Q&A where we hear about their origins and their creative process, these guests also tend to bring in acoustic guitars, sometimes saxophones, sometimes even drum kits, and perform live during the show!

It’s just one week in to the New Year, so I thought I’d take one last look back at 2025 and listen to some of the recorded performances. The headline up top says “best of,” but it was honestly so hard to choose! What you’ll hear on this episode is roughly 60% of the live performances I’ve featured throughout the year, including Stef Chura, Lyons Lane, Metal Bubble Trio, The Whiskey Charmers and The City Lines.
