Detroit Evening Report: Memorial Day travel
According to AAA Michigan, aboutâŻ1.3 million state residents will hit the roads this weekend. The auto group says this is the second highest state number on record for theâŻholiday weekend. This follows a national trend, with estimates setting up a new national record, topping last yearâs numbers by 1%.âŻÂ Â
To avoid peak travel times, AAAâŻsuggestsâŻtravellingâŻbetween 9 p.m. on Thursday and 11 a.m. on Friday. Those traveling on SundayâŻwillâŻhave little to no traffic, but those traveling onâŻMonday will get the worst of it between noon and 5 p.m.âŻâŻÂ Â
Memorial Day Weekend travel is costing more across the country this yearâŻon average due to rising gas prices.âŻThe increase is connected to the War in Iran and the closing of the Strait of Hormuz.âŻThis year, gas prices average $4.74 per gallon in Michigan. Last year the average was $3.13.âŻâŻÂ Â
