Big Sonic Heaven: Barcelona’s Primavera Sound Festival, new Carly Hann + more

In this week’s Big Sonic Heaven, we heard new music from Canadian singer-songwriter Carly Hann, a dreamy track from the project Fischersund featuring Jónsi from Sigur Rós, the latest from Edward Ka-Spel, and more. We also featured artists who were a part of the incredible Primavera Sound Festival lineup in Barcelona including The Cure, My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, and Einstürzende Neubauten, as well as your favorite shoegaze, dreampop and post-punk classics.

Big Sonic Heaven: A preview of great artists out on tour this year including Tricky, Gene + more

Big Sonic Heaven featured some bands hittin’ the road this year! Tricky is touring North America for the first time in eight years, and his first show is right here in Detroit at El Club on September 16. We heard his latest track “Out of Place” (feat. Marta).

Gene’s first American Tour in 24 years starts this November. The limited tour doesn’t include Detroit, but if you want to travel, they’ll be in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, Toronto, DC, and NYC. The same goes for The Tear Garden. The closest shows to Detroit are Chicago on September 24 for the Cold Waves festival and Cleveland at the Grog Shop on September 26.

Big Sonic Heaven: Celebrating 30 years of ‘Fall Sounds’ by Velour 100

Tonight’s episode featured new music from The Haunted Youth’s new album “Boys Cry Too,” more from the latest Tokyo Shoegazer album, a Philadelphia multi-instrumentalist called Forest Circles, and more from The Twilight Sad.

A few great collaborations were also featured, including “Pause the Rain” by synthpop harp duo Masal and Emma Anderson of Lush. Plus, a track from Kilbey Kennedy, featuring Steve Kilbey of The Church and Martin Kennedy from All India Radio, as well as the hypnotizing new track from Gergana Dimitrova and Lisa Gerrard of Dead Can Dance.

Local music included Shoestrings, a new release from the Detroit Dreampop duo Bluhm, as well as a classic from Velour 100 in celebration of the 30th anniversary of their album Fall Sounds, which is now available on vinyl for the first time.

Big Sonic Heaven can be heard Sundays 9 p.m. to midnight and on-demand at WDET.org, playing dreampop, shoegaze, post-punk, trip-hop and more.

Big Sonic Heaven: Cocteau Twins ‘Victorialand’ turns 40 and New Order gets inducted into Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

It’s been 40 years since the release of Cocteau Twins’ “Victorialand.” In celebration of the anniversary, we heard two tracks from the album. We also heard a track from New Order celebrating their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Then we heard a classic from Bjork as she gears up for her rave during the eclipse in Iceland this August and a new limited edition 7’ single from Nation of Language, covering the Bruce Springsteen song, “Tougher Than The Rest.”

Plus a track from the debut album from the new Italian shoegaze band, Yumeia & Tre Flip. Portland-based Phosphene has a new album, “Velveteen,” due out in May. We listened to “Wired,” along with new Hammock, The Twilight Sad, and more!
