With the August primary behind us, we now have a clearer view of what the upcoming 2026 midterm election will look like here in Michigan.

Jocelyn Benson (D) and John James (R) emerged as their respective party’s gubernatorial candidates, and the two are set for an intense battle for Michigan Governor. And after a fiercely competitive primary, Abdul El-Sayed (D) advanced as the Democratic candidate for Michigan's open U.S. Senate seat; he will face former U.S. Representative Mike Rogers (R) in a race with national implications.

The groundwork is set for the November election. Join Stateside’s April Baer and a panel of Michigan Public hosts and reporters to preview this heated election. They’ll dive into the key races, campaign promises, and stakes of this midterm cycle.

This event is part of the popular series, Issues & Ale, from Michigan Public, the state’s largest public radio network. Issues and Ale is an event series from Michigan Public designed to engage people in conversations about important issues facing Michigan in an informal atmosphere. Your questions are always welcome.

What can Michigan voters tell us about the economic choices and political tensions facing the nation? On the next installment of the 1A series “If You Can Keep It,” Jenn White and Todd Zwillich will be live from Ann Arbor, Michigan, hearing directly from voters in one of the most consequential voting blocs in the country.

Join us at The Ark in downtown Ann Arbor for a behind-the-scenes look at radio broadcasting. Watch live as the 1A team examines what Michigan voters can tell us about the national electorate. From economic anxiety and cost of living, to immigration, the urban/rural divide, and turbulent political culture, they’ll confront some of the most important issues for voters this November.

In what ways is Michigan a bellwether, and in what ways is it not? What’s actually driving Michiganders' choices in November and what can it tell us about the country as a whole? 1A is asking YOU what you care about most, what change you most want to see in your state and country, and what you expect from your government now.

This is a free Michigan Public event, but registration is necessary. Register here.

There will not be a livestream available for this event.

Jenn White has worked in public radio since 1999. She began her career here at Michigan Public (then Michigan Radio) as the local host of All Things Considered. She then worked at WBEZ in Chicago, where she hosted the station’s midday show, Reset with Jenn White. She was also a familiar voice on several WBEZ podcasts, including Making Oprah, Making Obama, and 16 Shots. In 2020, White was selected as the permanent host of NPR’s 1A program, replacing the program’s inaugural host, Joshua Johnson.

1A can be heard on Michigan Public every weekday from 10 a.m. to noon.

Michigan Public Names Brian Manzullo as Managing Editor of Multiplatform News Strategy

(Brian Manzullo)

Michigan Public News Director Vincent Duffy is pleased to announce that Brian Manzullo has joined Michigan Public as the station’s inaugural Managing Editor of Multiplatform News Strategy.

Before joining Michigan Public, Manzullo spent more than 14 years at the Detroit Free Press. Most recently, he served as Digital Director, overseeing the newsroom’s digital strategy and operations. Prior to coming to Detroit, Manzullo worked as an online sports producer for The Arizona Republic in Phoenix. He is also a graduate of Central Michigan University.

In this new position, Manzullo will help lead efforts to strengthen Michigan Public’s digital journalism and elevate the quality, impact, and reach of the station’s work across platforms. This role will play an important part in ensuring that Michigan Public’s award-winning journalism continues to reach and serve Michiganders around the state.

“We’re thrilled to have Brian join the team,” said Duffy. “As Michigan Public continues to grow, it’s becoming clear that our digital offerings are a key area for expansion. This new role, and Brian’s experience in digital operations, allows us to continue evolving as an organization. We’re very excited.”

Manzullo will be based out of Michigan Public’s Ann Arbor office, working closely with both the newsroom and the digital team to direct the station’s digital storytelling. Manzullo will step into this role on Monday, Sept. 21.

Explore two of England’s most celebrated gardens. See Great Dixter, the former home of plantsman and garden writer Christopher Lloyd and one of the world’s most influential gardens, and the iconic Sissinghurst Castle Garden.

Visit Penshurst Place and Gardens. The medieval Baron’s Hall was completed in 1341 as a country retreat for the lord mayor of London. Explore this grand estate and its lovely gardens. Then, explore Hever Castle. Its history spans more than 600 years, but it’s most well known as the childhood home of Anne Boleyn.

Your journey continues with a departure to historic Oxford. En route, we’ll visit the Royal Horticultural Society Garden Wisley. Enjoy a student-led tour of the historic colleges of the University of Oxford, including the University of Oxford Botanic Garden–the oldest botanical garden in Britain.

Discover Winston Churchill’s life at Blenheim Palace and explore Rousham Gardens. Then, take a trek to the Cotswolds. Visit the charming town of Chipping Campden and journey through Hidcote Manor Garden, one of the most influential and famous of all English gardens.
