A stolen car being chased by Redford police crashed into a Detroit man's truck early Monday morning, leaving the family frustrated and feeling forgotten by authorities.

Caronne Cannon said he had just gotten home from work and was making food when the stolen car ended up on his front lawn on Lenore Street in Detroit.

Detroit family wants accountability after Redford police chase ends in crash on their property

"When I open the door and I seen that the car had hit my truck and it was up here in my yard, I was mad. I'm not going to lie. I was very mad," Cannon said.

Redford police say the chase began after a resident called 911 to report several people trying to steal a car on Five Points Street. Surveillance video shows the suspect running from the crashed car after the collision.

The impact of the crash forced Cannon's truck into another car in the driveway, according to his fiance, Aiesha Heard.

"If it wasn't our car, it was our home," Heard said.

Cannon said the damage hit especially hard given recent history with the same truck.

"I was furious. I had just got this truck fixed out of my own pocket from it being stolen and damaged in previous months," Cannon said.

The family's children were also shaken by the crash.

"My kids were awake and they were terrified from this. My daughter stayed up all night. She didn't even want to go back to sleep," Cannon said.

Police eventually found the juvenile suspect and took them into custody. However, Cannon and Heard say they feel like they've been forgotten in the aftermath.

"They asked if I had insurance. That was it. And that I would have to take this up with my insurance company," Cannon said.

When asked, Cannon said he doesn't think it's fair.

"It's not fair at all. I was parked. I wasn't even driving my vehicle. In my driveway on my property. Why should I have to get my insurance involved?" Cannon said.

Heard said she wants more from the department.

"I just want them to take accountability. That's it," Heard said.

She also expressed concern that the situation would be dismissed.

"You can sweep stuff like this under the rug," Heard said.

7 News Detroit asked Redford police what they plan to do for the family and have not yet heard back.

Former student pulls back the curtain on drama teacher facing child porn charges

By: Megan Lee
21 August 2026 at 02:57

A former student at Warren Consolidated School of Performing Arts says drama teacher Mark Sharrow, who faces 12 felony counts related to child pornography and drugs, regularly crossed boundaries with students.

Mary Bonkowski graduated from the theater program just a few months ago and says Sharrow's behavior raised red flags long before his arrest.

"I wasn't fully shocked. We all thought he was weird with students," Bonkowski said.

Bonkowski says she worked alongside Sharrow on multiple occasions and even went on school trips with him to New York and Lansing. She says looking back, his behavior was off.

"We spent a lot of time together like after school um so it kind of felt like the boundary wasn't really there people would call him mark um instead of Mr. Sharrow," Bonkowski said.

Sharrow, 37, of Warren, has been charged with 12 counts related to child pornography and drugs. He is being held on a $1 million bond.

The Macomb County Prosecutor's Office says Sharrow was arrested Tuesday in Houghton Lake in connection with a criminal sexual conduct investigation. The school district says he was already on administrative leave for an internal investigation at the time of his arrest.

Warren Consolidated Schools Superintendent John Bernia addressed what the district's investigation uncovered.

"What we had uncovered in the course of our investigation was accusations that involved former students after they had graduated," Bernia said.

Bonkowski says she is relieved that those who came forward were taken seriously.

"I'm very glad that they had the courage to say something, because that's extremely difficult, especially because you don't know if you're going to be believed. I mean, historically, a lot of these things have been swept under the rug, so I'm glad that they finally listened and that it was taken seriously," Bonkowski said.

Bonkowski also described Sharrow's erratic behavior at school.

"He showed up to school a lot of the time in different moods, like sometimes he'd be very, very buddy-buddy and like, oh my gosh, I love you guys, we're the best friends. And then like an hour later, he'd screaming at people," Bonkowski said.

The district says it is working with police and is encouraging students to come forward with any information.

"The cars are important, but what's really important is the people," Paul Stanczak said.

Stanczak and his son Ryan are among those who never miss a cruise. Ryan Stanczak travels from California each year to share the experience with his father and their 1967 Corvette.

"It's such a family affair and it brings people together and the stories and just walking through here and talking to different people," Ryan Stanczak said.

For Paul Stanczak, the magic of the event is simple.

"I like to go up to the street and watch the cars go by. I like to see the cars moving because cars are supposed to move, so I like seeing that," Paul Stanczak said.

Everyone has that one car they keep an eye out for.

"Old Dodge Charger stunt car General Lee 01 color orange," Jerellee Harvel of Southfield said.

Thirteen-year-old Brayden Stocker says he's a car enthusiast and hopes to be a race car driver one day. He has two favorite types of cars.

"Probably a Corvette or a Viper ACR," Brayden Stocker said.

Car lovers can see all the classics starting at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Birmingham businesses happy to see more police patrols following weekend brawl

Birmingham residents and business owners are welcoming a boost in police presence downtown.

The Birmingham Police Department announced Thursday it is increasing patrols following a rise in crowd-related incidents, including a large fight near Willits and Bates streets last weekend. Police said no one was arrested and no victims filed police reports.

Suela Maklaj, general manager of Bell Bistro on Old Woodward Avenue, said she witnessed the aftermath of the brawl.

"We need to have more security, more cops. So hopefully, this will change soon," Maklaj said.

Maklaj said weekends bring large crowds and cars speeding down Old Woodward, and the environment has left her feeling uneasy.

"Honestly, like I don't sometimes I don't feel safe walking to the parking lot," Maklaj said.

The increased police presence is drawing support from business owners and regular visitors alike.

"I don't know what's going on. I mean, that's ridiculous," said Diana, a Birmingham regular.

Marko Juncaj, general manager of Terra Kitchen & Cocktails, said the recent fights have hurt businesses in the area.

"These fights are just a negative impact on all the businesses around here and it's unnecessary," Juncaj said.

Juncaj said his restaurant relies on a large management team and strict security policies to keep the environment safe and enjoyable.

"We just don't allow it here," Juncaj said. "Zero tolerance."

Juncaj said he supports the timing of the increased patrols.

"Oh yeah, why not. I always support that. Just to make everyone feel safer. That's a positive, ya know," Juncaj said.

Diana said she believes a visible, varied police presence would make a difference.

"Oh, that would be fantastic. On bikes, even motorcycles, by foot and then they can interact and they can see," Diana said.

The Birmingham Fire Department is also getting involved. The department will conduct random occupancy inspections to ensure businesses are complying with capacity limits.

New legislation could improve enforcement of excessively loud cars at Woodward Dream Cruise

By: Megan Lee
13 August 2026 at 02:26

Car enthusiasts love the sweet sound of the Woodward Dream Cruise. But for many who live along the Woodward corridor, it's not so sweet. Residents say the excessively loud cars start months before the Dream Cruise.

Watch Megan Lee's report below

So I think thats the biggest issue for the residents, its not necessarily this weekend, its the prolonged dream cruise," said Lieutenant Jordan Kobernick with the Berkley Public Safety Department.

Lt. Kobernick said this is an issue multiple municipalities are seeing.

"Royal Oak definitely takes the brunt of that. North of 13 mile and a lot of that trickles down," Lt. Kobernick said.

And that's why State Representatives Natalie Price and Jason Hoskins are hoping to push House Bills 6151 and 6152 into law. If passed, this legislation would improve enforcement against excessively loud cars out on Woodward.

Watch our previous coverage Michigan lawmakers push to crack down on loud cars along Woodward Avenue

I mean if its all the time and people are running open exhaust then yeah I have some sympathy for them," said Keith Dusina, a classic car owner.

State lawmakers say it's impacting residents with PTSD, scaring pets and disrupting sleep. There are local ordinances to combat this, but they can be hard to enforce.

The original law is very cumbersome. It requires a lot of equipment and a lot of personnel to do it effectively," Lt. Kobernick said.

Berkley has it's own ordinance, but that can't be enforced on Woodward because it's a state highway. I asked the lieutenant if he wants to see an updated law.

"Yes, something thats more reasonable, something that is enforceable. Its a balance for both sides. We dont want to be issuing tickets but we also want compliance for our residents as well," Lt. Kobernick replied.

If passed, this would ease excessive noise on all state highways.

Denise LeBlanc considers herself a car enthusiast and doesn't agree with this legislation.

Well, what are we supposed to do? Keep em in the garage and shine em? I mean this is what we live for," Denise said.

"When you hear a car revving up, what goes through your mind?" I followed up with.

"Man, your heart just flutters," she replied. "I think that it should not be able to be passed. Legislation. Weve got so much more to worry about than loud cars, honestly.

She also worries about her safety while riding her Harley.

If I dont have loud pipes, Im gonna die," Denise said.

State Rep. Price says she hopes this goes before the transportation committee when they're back in session.

Dearborn residents concerned that beloved oak trees will be taken down for potential sewer project

Tall oak trees fill Edison Park in Dearborn, but that may not be the case much longer. Neighbors are worried that the trees will be cut down in the coming years for a possible sewer project.

Watch Megan Lee's report below Dearborn residents concerned that beloved oak trees will be taken down for potential sewer project

"We love our neighborhood and we dont want to see it all torn apart," said Dearborn resident Tracy Gatt.

It's the neighborhood near Elmdale Street that runs next to the Ford World Headquarters.

It would be a shame to lose all this. Because you can re plant the trees but it takes a long time," Gatt said.

Edison Park is a little slice of heaven for the residents who live nearby.

I dont want people to cut down trees and ruin the park," said Charlotte, another Dearborn resident.

Dearborn Mayor Abdullah Hammoud met with hundreds of residents Tuesday night to answer questions about a possible flooding prevention and sewer separation project. He says the goals of the multi-year, $100 million project are to accomplish two major concerns in the city: flooding and keeping the River Rouge clean.

I want to assure you, were going to do the best we can to minimize any impact to any trees, anywhere," Hammoud said. The sewer separation increases our capacity and it puts in alignment with the requirements by the state department to reduce all the excess stuff were putting in the rouge river.

Neighbors are wondering why Elmdale is the target for this project. Gatt tells me she has never had flooding issues, but understands the city is working to upgrade the infrastructure.

How many people here have had basements flood in this neighborhood? How many people have not had basements flood? Gatt wondered. If they gotta solve a problem, Im not opposed to solving a problem if there is one but there should be a less intrusive way to do it.

Meanwhile, Cheryl Hawkins knows the devastation of a flood all too well.

"It's heartbreaking when you throw out all those memories and stuff like that," Hawkins, who supports the sewer project, said.

Hawkins says some of her neighbors have been dealing with flooding for decades.

Its exciting to see that we might have some type of relief down the road," she said.

Hawkins said her son is an engineer for the city. However, the flooding issues have been going on far longer.

Mayor Hammoud said there will be more concrete plans for this project in the next 18 months. He says there should be a design plan by the end of 2028.

St. Clair Shores couple arrested after throwing explosive device into neighbor's yard

A St. Clair Shores couple has been charged with multiple felonies after throwing an explosive device with the words 'bye bye' written on it into their neighbor's yard.

Prosecutors say that the couple set fire to the device before throwing it in their neighbor's yard.

Watch Megan Lee's report below: St. Clair Shores couple arrested after throwing explosive device into neighbor's yard

"Do you think he wanted to kill you?" I asked the victim, David.

"Oh yeah, he definitely wanted to harm me in a serious way," he replied. Hes got this explosive device there. I could have been killed or maimed or something could have happened.

David, 72, was coming home from the grocery store around 8:45 p.m. on Monday when it all unfolded.

I put them on the kitchen table, I looked right out the window," David recounted. "And hes got his arm cocked back, she lights the fuse and it lands right here. And then its sparking, and smoking and smoldering and Im waiting for an explosion and nothing happened, thank the Lord.

David actually put the explosive device out. The Macomb County Prosecutor's Office says 45-year-old Jason Showers and his wife, Megan Showers, are to blame. The defendants eventually came out of there and were taken into custody.

David said officers had long guns in David's backyard.

"I had one in my bedroom window. And shout out to St Clair Shores Police, state police, they did an outstanding job," David said.

And when police went inside the home, they found firearms, ammunition, and materials for assembling explosive devices. David says there has been years of issues between the beighbors.

"And one of his favorite things to do was to put explosives on my gas meter, you can see one of them over here," David said. I was living like in constant on the edge and discomfort not knowing what is he going to do next.

Michigan criminal records show that Jason Showers has a lengthy, dangerous past. He went to prison in the early 2000's for Manslaughter with a Motor Vehicle, Operating Under the Influence, and several weapons offenses.

I spoke to other neighbors off camera who are worried for their safety. They tell me they're relieved that this couple is behind bars.

Theres always drama going on at that house, something is happening," one neighbor said.

The Showers are facing multiple felony charges, including Possession of Bombs with Unlawful Intent and Placing an Explosive Device near property.

They are scheduled to be back in court for a Probable Cause Conference on August 14.

After 3 wins at the Ballot Box, the Progressive Movement is moving forward in Michigan

3 names on the ballot Tuesday who ran on progressive platforms now have secured a spot in November's general election ballot: Abdul El-Sayed, Donavan McKinney and William Lawrence are all pushing the Progressive Movement forward.

Watch Megan Lee's report below After 3 wins at the Ballot Box, the Progressive Movement is moving forward in Michigan

My hope is that our democracy will never be the same," El-Sayed said in his victory speech after winning the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate in Michigan.

The morning after his victory, El-Sayed says his win wasn't possible without the help of his people.

And it turns out when the people want something in this democracy of ours. The people can get that thing if theyre willing to do the work of that. And thats exactly what Michiganders up and and down the state showed. 12,000 volunteers knocking nearly 10,000 doors a day," El-Sayed said.

Now, El-Sayed will go head-to-head with Republican candidate Mike Rogers.

Kiara Lu supports El-Sayed and other progressives like New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

"I believe that he can beat Mike Rogers. I will work twice as hard to make sure he beats Mike Rogers," she said. I think a lot of saw what was going on especially going on in New York with Mamdani and saw that there are politicians that are working to actually fulfill the needs of constituents and the people who are voting for them.

According to the Michigan Democratic Chair, Curtis Hurtel, "Yesterday was the highest turnout for democrats in the history of a Michigan primary."

Those votes not only gave El-Sayed a ticket to the general election in November, but also House Candidates William Lawrence and Donavan McKinney.

This is about moving our party forward," McKinney said.

McKinney, who's hoping to represent Michigan's 13th Congressional District, wants to see Health Care for All, big money out of politics and a stop on funding wars overseas.

Wayne State University Business Professor Marick Masters says the Progressives are gaining ground. However, the results for the November Election will go much deeper.

There was a long period of time in which if you said you were a socialist, even within the Democratic Party, you would be ostracized. Those days are over," Masters said. If the war is continuing, if the economic news continues to be rocky, A little bit of good news here, a little bit of bad news there, then I don't think the Republicans will have the enthusiasm to generate the numbers that they need in order to have significant wins in November, and it will favor the Democrats.

That election is just around the corner on November 3. Many candidates we heard from on Election Night say they have a lot of work to do in the coming weeks.

A Detroit-area woman says nearly her entire sneaker collection was stolen from a Public Storage unit in Oak Park days after she moved her belongings there.

The storage facility is located at 8 Mile and Greenfield roads.

Qiana Wright said she placed her shoes and furniture in a storage unit at the Public Storage facility on July 18 while relocating.

"Thinking it's going to be safe to put my stuff in storage," Wright said.

When she returned to the unit days later to retrieve something, she discovered almost all of her shoes were gone and the wire ceiling had been cut.

"That's how they got in here. Because all my little stickers were going across there," Wright said during a tour of the unit.

Wright said approximately 250 pairs of Jordan sneakers were taken.

"They took all my Jordans, every last one of em," Wright said.

Wright has collected the shoes over the years.

"Them shoes cost a lot. And some of them, I cant get back because they were classic from a long time ago when they first came out," Wright said.

She said surveillance video shown to her by the facility captured the theft in progress.

"They showed me a video of a person rolling my shoes out. They kept going back and fourth, rolling my shoes out," Wright said.

Wright said the experience has left her feeling violated.

"I'm hurt because I really work hard for everything I got in there," Wright said.

Wright has insurance on her unit and is hoping to recover her belongings or receive reimbursement.

"I want them to do something about it. Because that's not right for people to lose everything they earned," Wright said.

The Oak Park Public Safety Department confirmed it is investigating the theft. Cameras are visible throughout the building.

Wright may not be the only renter affected. Princess Gibbs, who also rents a unit at the facility, said she has noticed her belongings disturbed over the past few months.

"My shoes. I have five pairs of heels that I put into storage. I just went and I'm seeing only two. I'm confused. I don't understand what's going on," Gibbs said.

Gibbs said she keeps her unit organized, making the disruptions difficult to ignore.

"Because it's not the way the I left it. It did make me feel like I was going crazy, especially with my partner telling me aint nobody going in there, it's a storage unit, they have security. No, I have been feeling crazy," Gibbs said.

Gibbs has not filed a police report.

7 News Detroit tried to reach Public Storage multiple times over the past few days and did not hear back.
