"Anyone time you have a 4-year-old, a young person of that age fatally wounded all life is valuable, but this one right here particularly gets to me and so I'm very, very disturbed by this," Bettison said.

Detroit homicide detectives are investigating the shooting. They were canvassing the neighborhood, talking to witnesses and looking for video to help with the investigation.

"We're asking the public, anyone who may have been here, saw something to give us the information (or call) Crime Stoppers 1-800-SPEAK-UP or you can call our homicide section. We're going to ensure we work this case relentlessly to bring the perpetrators to justice," Bettison said.

Detroit police release names of suspect, person of interest in Ford Fireworks shooting

27 June 2025 at 20:52

Detroit police say they are searching for two men in connection with the shooting at this year's Ford Fireworks.

They have been identified as Alphonso Cooper Jr. of Romulus and Markalowe Keith Steen Jr. of Brownstown Township.

Watch Randy Wimbley's video report: Two wanted for shooting during Ford Fireworks in Detroit

Officers released the two men's names Friday evening. Police say Cooper is the suspected shooting and Steen helped Cooper escape.

I do not want them to have an enjoyable, stress-free weekend. I want them to know that we are out there, Chief Todd A. Bettison said.

The shooting happened Monday around 10:04 p.m. right before the fireworks show began near Larned and Randolph streets.

Two people, a 17-year-old boy and a 22-year-old woman were injured, police said. One of them was shot in the hand and the other was shot in the legs, police said. Both victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries and are expected to survive.

Police said there was a group of young people in the area, and Cooper and another male got into a fight over $200. Cooper allegedly pulled out a handgun and fired at least two shots, hitting an intended target, the 17-year-old boy, and the 22-year-old woman, who was not involved in the altercation.

"The fight was very brief. Cooper produced a firearm and fired two shots, subsequently striking the victim," the chief said.

Police said Cooper and Steen took off into a parking structure after the shooting

Police said video captured the incident, including when the gun went off. They quickly provided pictures of who they're looking for.

At the time, the suspected shooter was wearing a blue hoodie, blue shorts, and white shoes, Bettison said. He said the person of interest was wearing a white shirt, white pants and white shoes.

Police have executed several warrants in the search for the two. Investigators believe family and friends are hiding the suspect but said they've received tips.

Police are warning anyone helping Cooper will "face consequences."

If you help him avoid apprehension and help him leave the state of Michigan or anything like that, trust me, I will be contacting the U.S. attorney and I will use every aspect of law enforcement to hold you accountable as well for aiding and abetting and every charge that I can possibly bring. So at this point, I urge and encourage the folks that love and care about Mr. Cooper and Mr. Cooper himself, Alphonso, turn yourself in, turn yourself in, Bettison said.

A third person was detained after the shooting. Police said that person was not involved and was released.

Anyone with information on this incident or these individuals is advised to contact the 3rd Precinct detective unit at 313-596-5340 or submit an anonymous tip at Crime Stoppers 1-800-Speak-Up or Detroitrewards.tv

Royal Oak doctor facing human trafficking charges, allegedly ransomed health care to exploit victims

27 June 2025 at 13:47

A 49-year-old doctor from Royal Oak who allegedly ransomed health care to exploit victims is facing human trafficking and drug charges.Β

Watch the story in the video player below: Royal Oak doctor facing human trafficking charges

According to the Oakland County Prosecutors Office, Gireesh Velugubanti, a practicing neurologist, was a customer of the Sonesta Suites trafficking ring.

The prosecutors office says three people are facing trafficking charges related to the ring: Antione Fulgiam, Chanel Rackard, and Sherri Gress.

See video from his arraignment below

Royal Oak doctor arraigned on sex trafficking charges

Β Velugubanti allegedly texted Fulgiam to arrange sex with trafficking victims and purchase drugs. He also allegedly messaged that he was unhappy with one of the trafficked sex workers, telling Fulgiam to warn the victim that her free medical care may end.Β

Velugubanti is charged with Human Trafficking Enterprise Resulting In Injury/Commercial Sexual Activity and Conspiracy To Deliver A Controlled Substance Less Than 50 Grams.

This defendants alleged behavior is especially shocking, said Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald in a statement. According to police investigations, he effectively ransomed health care in order to exploit one or more victims. The first rule of the medical profession is to do no harm. There are few things a doctor can do more harmful than to allegedly expect sex as a condition for care.

Velugubanti was arraigned on the charges on Friday. A not guilty plea was entered on his behalf.

The judge set his bond at $500,000 cash surety, no 10%, with a GPS tether and other restrictions.

His next court date is scheduled for July 10 at 8:30 a.m.

26-year-old Detroit man drowns in Cass Lake, sheriff's office confirms

23 June 2025 at 01:20

A 26-year-old Detroit man drowned in Cass Lake on Sunday, the Oakland County Sheriffs Office confirmed.

According to the sheriffs office, the man, who did not know how to swim, may have thought the water was shallow when he left the boat, but it was actually 55 feet deep.

Officials say the victim was on a 20-foot boat with four other people, and the boat had been trolling over a sandbar in the lake before moving to deep water. After the victim went in, a friend reportedly tried to help him, but officials say the victim panicked and the friend could not hold him.

Officials say they received the 911 call around 4:15 p.m. After sorting through conflicting location information, the sheriffs office said they got to the victim within six minutes of figuring out his approximate location and began performing CPR.

The victim was transported to a local hospital, where he later died, officials say.

With the onset of warmer weather and a substantial increase in water activity, we urge people to employ flotation devices and wear them if they are not strong swimmers, irrespective of the situation, Sheriff Michael Bouchard said in a statement. Additionally, it is crucial to have life-saving equipment on board boats to rescue individuals in distress. An enjoyable day on the water can rapidly become a tragic moment.

It's unclear at this time how long the girl was in the water before she was found.

Suspect in shooting of Southgate police officers taken into custody

19 June 2025 at 20:55

Southgate police say they have taken the suspect in the shootings of two Southgate police officers into custody.

More details are expected to be released soon. The entire city was placed under a shelter-in-place order while the search was conducted.

Watch the video report below: Suspect in shooting of Southgate police officers taken into custody

The suspect was identified as a 20-year-old man from the area. While police released his name as part of the search, 7 News Detroit has removed it from our coverage since he has not yet been charged.

Two Southgate police officers were shot and taken to the hospital after an incident at a Southgate apartment complex, according to Southgate police. Officials say they responded to a weapons call around 4:10 p.m.

It happened at the Village on the Park and The Reserve at Southgate apartments on Northline, east of I-75.

Police say officers responded to a call about an individual waving a weapon around at the apartment complex. They arrived on the scene, and began looking for the suspect. They encountered him quickly near a second-floor laundry room. When they made contact, he pulled out a gun and began shooting. Both officers, two men, were struck once in their legs and did not fire back.

Officials said both officers are in stable condition and with family at a local hospital. The officers are a five-year veteran and a 10-year veteran with the department.

Its not the call that you want to receive to hear one officer and then to find out that we have two officers shot. Its a gut punch, Southgate Director of Public Safety Joe Marsh said. Law enforcement officers go out here every day to do their job and help people and protect the community. And to get that call where two police officers are shot, its sickening.

Multiple agencies from across Downriver and beyond responded to the scene, including the FBI, ATF, Melvindale Police, Taylor Police, Lincoln Park Police, Michigan State Police and more.

The suspect was taken into custody just after 8 p.m. Thursday.

"Its also a relief that we know that theres no more threat or danger to the community or to any of our other police officers," Marsh said.

According to deputies, dispatch received a call around 9:47 a.m. Tuesday regarding two deceased people on Heiss Road near Steffas Road.

Deputies responded and discovered a deceased female and male, who both appear to be teenagers. One of the teens has been identified as 16-year-old Faith Hamilton. She is being called the victim in this case.

The other teen is 16-year-old Landon Bryan LaFond, and he is being called the suspect in this case. Both of them suffered gunshot wounds. The official causes of death have not yet been determined.

A GoFundMe account has been set up to help Hamilton's family.

Detectives are investigating, but the sheriff's office said they are confident there is no danger to the community.

I was actually down there yesterday on the golf cart just tooling around and there was nothing down there then, said Tom Hannah, who lives nearby.

Hannah and other neighbors say this is abnormal for the area, and they're concerned about the manner of deaths.

The sheriff's office said there is no connection between this incident and a reported incident in Bedford Township from June 14.

Bedford Township case:

Monroe County Sheriff Troy Goodnough says the deaths of two people in Beford Township over the weekend have been ruled a homicide and a murder.

The bodies of 17-year-old Gwendolyn Fay Smith and 33-year-old Ryne Jacob Leist, both of Temperance, were found sometime late Saturday or early Sunday in the 1600 block of W Sterns Road. Both had been shot and died on Saturday.

A GoFundMe account has been set up to help Smith's family.

The Lucas County Coroner's Office has ruled Smith's death a homicide and Leist's death a suicide. During a Wednesday afternoon news conference, police named Leist as a suspect in Smith's death.

Officials say Leist and Smith met when he was the bowling coach at Bedford High School.

Officials also say rumors that Leist was employed as a coach for Bedford Public Schools are untrue. Smith was a 2025 graduate of Beford Public Schools.

Officials say Leist was a "known acquaintance" of Smith and that there is no evidence they were dating, stating in a press release, "They were merely acquaintances."
