The chase happened on St. Antoine Street. Officials say the man was initially arrested at 8 a.m. on a gun possession charge. When he was brought to the jail, he allegedly assaulted police at the Detroit Detention Center. Police say after the assault, he was being transferred to DMC for medical clearance when he escaped.

Police tell us it took 40 minutes to re-capture the man, who we're told has an extensive criminal record, including weapons charges. Officials say there is no threat to the public at this time.

We spoke to a witness who saw the chase.

"I looked out my window this morning, and I saw a young guy running from across the street with handcuffs on his hand," said Jamel Hancock, who lives nearby.

Hancock's home is in the general area where police set up a perimeter to capture the escaped suspect.

"It's kind of normal around here in this area," Hancock said. "When somebody running for their life like that, did that mean he didn't want to be in whatever place y'all try to put him in? They should try to help him and see what's really wrong and see why he did run, because there's a reason why he ran like that."

The Detroit Police Department is investigating after two men were shot and killed on the city's west side early Wednesday morning.

This happened after 2 a.m. at a home on Forrer Street.

We're told that four guys were hanging out at the home when an argument with a roommate happened before the shootings. A 32-year-old man who rented that home was taken to the hospital in a personal vehicle, where he later died.

Neighbors in the area tell us they heard 40 shots overnight.

Both brothers have kids; the 35-year-old leaves behind a 10-year-old and a 1-year-old, while the 32-year-old leaves behind a 3-year-old.

The victim's family said this is the third brother they've said goodbye to in the past three years.

Police say three people were detained and are being questioned in connection with the shooting but they are not calling them suspects right now.

A statewide tornado drill is scheduled for this week: Here's what you need to know

17 March 2025 at 17:31

As part of Severe Weather Awareness Week, the Michigan State Police's Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division (MSP/EMHSD) is holding a voluntary statewide tornado drill on Wednesday.

The drill will take place at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, March 19.

"Last May, four tornadoes hit southwest Michigan in a single day, damaging homes and businesses across four counties," said Capt. Kevin Sweeney, deputy state director of Emergency Management and commander of MSP/EMHSD. "Severe weather can strike fast. Thats why its important to have a plan to protect yourself, your family, home, and pets."

The average lead time for tornadoes to develop is 10-15 minutes, which means everyone needs to act quickly.

Here's important info to know to stay ready:

Know the difference: a tornado WATCH means conditions exist for a tornado to develop; a tornado WARNING means a tornado has been sighted or indicated by weather radar. Know the signs of an approaching tornado: dark, often greenish sky; large hail; a large, dark, low-lying cloud; and a loud roar, like a freight train. Stay tuned to commercial radio or television broadcasts for news on changing weather conditions or approaching storms. Develop an emergency preparedness kit with essential items such as a three-day water and food supply, a NOAA Weather Radio, important family documents, and items that satisfy unique family needs. Identify a safe place in your home for household members and pets to gather during a tornado. Make sure everyone understands the tornado warning system in your area. Engage with your local emergency manager to find out if they are participating.

More information about staying prepared for incoming tornadoes can be found here.

Michigan State will conclude regular season at Ford Field for second time in three years

5 March 2025 at 17:08

For the second time in three seasons, the Michigan State football season will conclude it's regular season with a game at Ford Field, the venue announced on Wednesday.

This comes after Michigan State faced off against Penn State at Ford Field to end its 2023 regular season. This is the third time Michigan State will play at Ford Field, with the Spartans facing off against Florida Atlantic in 2010. Michigan State lost that Penn State game, 42-0, and beat Florida Atlantic 13 years earlier, 30-17.

Playing at Ford Field is an exciting opportunity for Spartan football, said MSU Vice President and Director of Athletics Alan Haller via statement on the upcoming game. The 2023 game proved that this can be a successful and enjoyable venture. I heard from fans, donors, students, and media, all of whom universally raved about their experience at Ford Field. We witnessed what the Detroit Lions experience every game, that Ford Field can be a tremendous home field advantage. Our student-athletes dream of playing in the NFL and to have the opportunity to play in that stadium is a thrill for them as well."

At this time, it is unclear what day the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) will move state championship games usually set for that Thanksgiving weekend but based on the release on this venue change, Haller implies that the state championships will still take place that weekend. The dates of those games are to be determined.

We are very thankful for Ford Field and the Detroit Lions, and all their work to host this game. Beyond that, were grateful for our ongoing partnership with the MHSAA and their accommodations in shifting their weekend schedule. Together, were able to provide a great four-day weekend of football in a terrific setting.

Michigan State season ticket holders will get priority order of tickets, and a section will be set aside for Michigan State students. Haller

"We are excited to welcome Michigan State Football back into Ford Field for another Spartan season finale," said Detroit Lions President and CEO, Rod Wood. "Thanksgiving and football have been a staple in Detroit for the past 91 years and this year will be a true celebration of the game at every level. It is an honor to connect all levels of the game by kicking off the weekend with the Lions and featuring the Big Ten and MHSAA State Championships throughout an amazing four days of football.
