'I was scared, I was nervous': Victim speaks after car & home flooded in Southwest Detroit

17 February 2025 at 17:12

In the midst of Monday morning's flooding in SW Detroit, Leigh Alicea shared this video she took from her second-story window on Beard Street, near Army Street.

She and four others are hunkered down inside their home. They've been awake since about 3:00 a.m.

I had the chance to interview her via Zoom; she told me that her car is flooded, her front and backyards and flooded and the water has breached her basement walls.

I asked her what went through her mind as she was literally surrounded with rising water.

Oh, I was, I was, I was scared. I was nervous," Leigh said. "I've never been through anything like this. I mean, I see it on TV, but it's like, I've never experienced this for myself. So I didn't know what to think. Really. I really didn't.

My basement has some water, but like, not like I've been talking to my neighbors, both my neighbors on this side, their whole basements flooded. They don't have no electricity," she continued.

"So some people have flooded basements and no electricity?" I replied.

No, yep. They don't have no heat. They don't have no lights. They said their stuff is floating in the basement. It's pretty bad," Leigh said.

Leigh tells me she's also concerned because her car is flooded, and she needs it to get to her job in Dearborn. She's called off of work today and is just grateful that her partner and children are safe.

But she knows that this is going to be a costly mess.

Brighton High School students raise record-breaking $85K for Trinity Health cancer care

23 January 2025 at 14:46

Students from Brighton High School have raised $85,000 to donate to help cancer patients at Trinity Health.

A spokesperson for the hospital group says that that dollar amount is the highest since the high school started the year-round Pink Week fundraiser 13 years ago.

Earlier this month, Students presented Trinity Health Michigan leadership with the donation that will benefit cancer patients and services at the Warren R. and Lauraine A. Hoensheid Cancer Center, located inside Trinity Health Medical Center in Brighton.

Trinity Health says this money will go towards helping cancer patients access support services, transportation, education and other services not covered by insurance.

It is really amazing what the students and community do for our patients, said Katie Beekman, MD, medical director of oncology at Trinity Health Michigan. The dedication and generosity from the community around this cause continues to grow and amaze us every year. We are so fortunate to have this kind of support behind our work. It makes a tremendous difference to our patients.

Lions defensive line coach Terrell Williams leaving to become Patriots defensive coordinator, per report

22 January 2025 at 14:12

Ben Johnson isn't the only coach leaving the Detroit Lions this off-season.

According to a report to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Lions run game coordinator and defensive line coach Terrell Williams is leaving the Lions to become the defensive coordinator for the New England Patriots.

Williams joined the Lions in 2024, manning a unit headlined by Aidan Hutchinson and Alim McNeil. Despite losing both those starters and several other players to injury, the Lions defensive line was part of a defense that only allowed 342 points last season, a mark that is seventh-best in the league. Under Williams in 2024, the Lions ranked fourth in pressures (179) and tied for 23rd in sacks

Williams worked under Mike Vrabel, the current Patriots head coach, with the Tennessee Titans from 2018-2023.

Trinity Health acquires 3 additional surgical robots to help with medical care

21 January 2025 at 13:52

To aid with surgeries at it's locations in Ann Arbor, Livonia and Chelsea, Trinity Health has acquired three additional Next Generation Surgical Robots.

The Ann Arbor and Chelsea hospitals got da Vinci 5 robots, while the Livonia location got a da Vinci Xi robot. The first surgery using the new robotic system was performed at the Chelsea Hospital last month.

These new robots now give Trinity Health robotic surgery systems statewide. Trinity Health says that robotic surgery is less invasive compared to traditional open surgery. The health benefits include less pain, less blood loss, less scarring, and shorter recovery times. JKey features of the new system include enhanced imaging, improved precision, and more comfort for the patient.

"As a surgeon, I'm fortunate that Trinity Health provides me with the most advanced tools, enabling me to deliver the highest quality care and the best possible outcomes for my patients," said Amanda McClure, M.D., a colorectal surgeon and chair of the Robotic Surgery Steering Committee at Trinity Health Michigan. These technologically advanced systems enhance vision, precision, and control, all while providing me with real-time feedback. Anyone considering surgery should carefully research their options, including whether robotic surgery is appropriate for them. It's important to choose a highly trained and experienced robotic surgeon and to ensure the provider has capacity to schedule the procedure promptly.

Last year, Trinity Health hospitals performed more than 7,000 procedures with da Vinci robots, with that number expected to grow in 2025.
