WXYZ Editorial: 'Detroit is one of coolest places to visit in the Midwest!'

Detroit is back in the national spotlight and the timing is perfect. As the months warm up, people will begin planning what destinations they want to travel to this year. The highly respected Travel & Leisure magazine recently pinned an article for the world to read. The author wrote: (Detroit) is slowly building a reputation as one of the coolest places to visit in the Midwest.

Travel & Leisure, which reaches over 16 million monthly travelers, confirmed what Visit Detroit has been preaching across the globe, that the Motor City has a thriving culinary scene, gorgeous outdoor spaces, and a rich history.

The travel guide highlighted cant miss things for travelers to Detroit that include:

Exploring the citys revitalization story through some of its guided tours. Marvel at works of arts and exhibits inside its world-class museums. Feast at some of Detroits new and old award-winning restaurants. Learn the history of its historic music scene - past and present- from the Motown Sound to rhythm & blues, jazz, rock, classical, and techno.

In addition, the print and digital magazine recommends several diverse hotels to stay at, as well as public spaces to stroll, and landmark buildings to visit. It also lists some of the citys most popular eateries and neighborhoods.

This outstanding recognition from Travel & Leisure validates the challenging work Detroit area residents, businesses, non-profits, and community leaders have been doing for years. WXYZ Editorial: "Let's Talk" together! When you speak, we listen

At WXYZ Channel 7, weve built our reputation on asking the right questions but the heart of our work isnt found in the questions, it's listening. Listening with open minds, compassion, and the intent to understand, not just to respond.

Thats why, one year ago, we launched Lets Talk.  No cameras rolling for a breaking story, no pre-written agenda just us, face to face with you, our neighbors. It started as a simple commitment: To show up, and to hear what matters most to the people of Southeast Michigan.

In the past year, that simple idea has blossomed into something powerful. Weve walked the streets of Waterford, stood under the bright lights of Novi, listened along Detroits beautiful riverfront, and shared moments in Shelby Township, and so many other places.

Weve heard about your challenges and triumphs, opportunities and frustrations, and ideas for a better tomorrow. And each conversation has helped guide our storytelling, sharpen our focus, and deepen the bond between Channel 7 and the communities we serve.

"Lets Talk" isnt just an event its a promise. A promise that we will always show up for you, listen without judgment, and work to be the kind of newsroom that earns your trust.

As we begin year two, our goal is simple: Keep the conversation going  and keep growing this connection. We want

Lets Talk

to happen in your neighborhood, your business, your gathering place.

If youd like to host an evening of honest conversation, go to wxyz.com and reach out. No topic is too small, and nothing is off the table.

Tell us: Whats shaping your quality of life? What stories arent being told?

When you speak, we listen and together, we can make Lets Talk more than a meeting.

WXYZ Editorial: TV-7 and community partners kickoff the 2026 "If You Give a Child a Book" campaign

Its one of the best gifts you could ever donate! Books open a childs imagination to endless possibilities. Mastering the fundamentals of reading is often the blueprint for a successful future.

Thats why WXYZ/Channel 7 and TV-20 Detroit, along with the Scripps Howard Fund, are committed to getting high-quality, age-appropriate books in the hands of children. This month, were kicking off our 2026 If You Give a Child a Book campaign with excitement. The recent book drive at Crothers Elementary School in Warren set the tone for our ongoing mission.

Last year, thanks to the kindness of our employees, viewers, and the Scripps Howard Fund, we were able to give more than 20 thousand books to deserving boys and girls. Were doing it again this year with help from community partners and Scholastic. Five Title I elementary schools will host two book fairs each. Students will be able to select and take home a total of 10 new books annually.

Many kids dont have home libraries of their own. The joy and education that comes from picking out books on different topics is priceless. It introduces them to characters and places from around the world. Books can also inspire them to pursue countless professions.

Our campaign coincides with Scripps and National News Literacy Week. If you share our passion for helping kids academically, we welcome your help. You can donate to our If You Give a Child a Book campaign by going to WXYZ.com or texting WXYZ to 50155.

As a thoughtful and generous community, we can make a lasting difference!
