Starbucks plans to remove 30% of its menu items this year

29 January 2025 at 18:18

Starbucks announced plans to cut out 30% of its menu items by later this year on its most recent investor call, according to multiple outlets.

It's part of the coffee shop giant's broader brand re-focus that it's calling "Back to Starbucks" in efforts to bring back customers after posting another loss in the most recent quarter.

New CEO Brian Niccol did not specify which menu items are being axed, but the company has already removed its olive oil drink line less than a year after it launched the brainchild of former CEO Howard Schultz.

Starbucks recently announced it was bringing back its condiment bar and free refills and it will no longer charge extra for nondairy milk in its beverages.

It's also reversing its open-door policy, where things like its restrooms are only available to customers.

While were only one quarter into our turnaround, were moving quickly to act on the 'Back to Starbucks' efforts and weve seen a positive response, said Brian Niccol in a press release. We believe this is the fundamental change in strategy needed to solve our underlying issues, restore confidence in our brand and return the business to sustainable, long-term growth."

Overwhelming majority of Greenlanders do not want to be a part of the US, poll finds

29 January 2025 at 16:55

The overwhelming majority of Greenlanders do not want their island to become a part of the United States, according to a new poll.

Only 6% said they would be in favor of their autonomous Arctic nation joining the U.S. while 85% said they wouldn't and 9% were undecided on the matter.

The poll was conducted by Verian and commissioned by the Danish newspaper Berlingske and Greenlandic daily Sermitsiaq, according to Reuters as President Donald Trump has expressed his desire to acquire the Danish territory.

The survey found that 45% of the Greenlanders viewed President Trump's interest as a threat, while 43% saw it as an opportunity.

However, only 8% of the residents would be willing to adopt U.S. citizenship over Denmark, which is known for its free education and universal healthcare.

This latest poll debunks another poll that Berlingske reported was used as propaganda in Russian media, which claimed the majority of Greenlanders wanted to be a part of the U.S.

24 January 2025 at 16:23

Most of us have heard of green cards as they relate to immigration. But what are red cards?

With President Donald Trump holding firm on his promises of mass deportations in his first days in office, theres a new demand for so-called red cards which are seen as a simple form of help to people immigrants in the U.S. regardless of their legal status.

The two-sided, wallet-sized red cards are printed with helpful tips on what to do when encountering a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent and inform the card carrier of their constitutional rights.

The Immigration Legal Resource Center (ILRC), a nonprofit that provides support and advocacy for immigrants, has order forms on its website to obtain these cards for free. However, it had to stop accepting new orders due to an unprecedented demand and a significant backlog" that has only grown since the election.

You can still download the artwork to print your own cards from the ILRCs website in over a dozen translations. There are also instructions on what type of paper to print them on and how to make them durable.

The red cards help people defend themselves in many situations, such as when ICE agents go to a home or workplace, the United Farm Workers Foundation stated on its website with a link to direct people to the ILRCs red cards page. We ask that people print these cards out and have them handy at all times just in case of emergency.

Businesses or attorneys offices that want to order over 1,000 of the cards can place orders on RedCardOrders.com but will have to pay a fee for printing them.

This is the text that is printed on the front side of the cards:

You have constitutional rights:

DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR if an immigration agent is knocking on the door.

DO NOT ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS from an immigration agent if they try to talk to you. You have the right to remain silent.

DO NOT SIGN ANYTHING without first speaking to a lawyer. You have the right to speak with a lawyer.

If you are outside of your home, ask the agent if you are free to leave and if they say yes, leave calmly.

GIVE THIS CARD TO THE AGENT. If you are inside of your home, show the card through the window or slide it under the door.

This is the text that is printed on the back side of the cards:

"I do not wish to speak with you, answer your questions, or sign or hand you any documents based on my 5th Amendment rights under the United States Constitution. I do not give you permission to enter my home based on my 4th Amendment rights under the United States Constitution unless you have a warrant to enter, signed by a judge or magistrate with my name on it that you slide under the door. I do not give you permission to search any of my belongings based on my 4th Amendment rights. I choose to exercise my constitutional rights. "

People with ADHD have a shorter life expectancy, study says

23 January 2025 at 17:31

A new study out of the U.K. found that people diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, have a lower life expectancy.

The study, published Thursday in the British Journal of Psychiatry, also found adults with ADHD on average experience poorer educational and employment outcomes and worse physical and mental health.

The life expectancy of men with ADHD was shortened by four to nine years, while the lifespan of women with the disorder was shortened by six to 11 years, according to the study.

Nearly 3% of adults have been diagnosed with ADHD, but researchers said many who have the condition have not been diagnosed.

The authors of the study said its the first to look at mortality data in connection to those diagnosed with the disorder.

The study was conducted by looking at primary care data from over 30,000 adults with ADHD and 300,000 without it.

We believe that this is likely caused by modifiable risk factors and unmet support and treatment needs in terms of both ADHD and co-occurring mental and physical health conditions, the authors of the study wrote.

21 January 2025 at 16:39

Just a few hours after President Donald Trump signed an executive order instructing federal officials to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America, Florida has already started implementing the change.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, a Republican, issued an order ahead of a rare winter storm system in which his office stated, An area of low pressure moving across the Gulf of America, interacting with Arctic air, will bring widespread impactful winter weather to North Florida

President Trump first talked about renaming the gulf in a press conference earlier in the month.

"Because we do most of the work there, and it's ours...we're going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. Gulf of America," he said on Jan. 7. "What a beautiful name. And it's appropriate."

The large body of water enveloping approximately 1,631 miles of the United States southeastern coastline is critical to the American economy.

The gulf shares nearly an equal amount of its borders with Mexico.

RELATED STORY |ย Can Trump rename the Gulf of Mexico to the 'Gulf of America?'

Its been named the Gulf of Mexico for over four centuries, but the name actually refers to a city named Mexico from Spanish colonization, a professor at Florida Atlantic University explained.

Even if President Trumps executive order is unchallenged and federal officials succeed in renaming the body of water, the rest of the world doesnt have to refer to it by the new name.

After President Trump first spoke about the name change, Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum sarcastically proposed her own name change in reference to North America. She said, Why don't we call it "Amrica Mexicana"? That sounds nice, no.

President Trump even poked at the hat himself, stating in a secondary speech after the ceremony, The wind is blowing like crazy and with the hat thats she wearing she almost blew away.

Meanwhile, former First Lady Dr. Jill Biden wore a head-to-toe purple ensemble designed by Ralph Lauren. The American fashion house designed First Lady Melanias powder blue dress, matching bolero jacket and gloves that she wore to President Trumps first inauguration in 2017.
