In The Groove: Kim Deal goes solo, Lola Young delivers painful love on ‘Charlie’ + more

19 November 2024 at 21:59

In The Groove Pick of the Week: ‘Renegade’ by Doves

15 November 2024 at 16:14

I first fell in love with Doves when their video for “Catch The Sun” was in regular rotation on MTV2. It was a gateway drug into a bunch of other stuff from folks like Grandaddy, who have always felt like some distant American cousin to Doves.

And I’m falling back in love with this trio from outside of Manchester and their latest single, “Renegade.” It’s the first taste of their upcoming album, “Constellations For The Lonely,” due out on Valentine’s Day (Feb. 14) next year. Drummer Andy Williams described it like this:

“Looking at everyone’s lives over recent years, and considering the news at the moment, ‘Renegade’ feels a lot more loaded in retrospect. We wanted to go for a dystopian feel, thinking about Manchester itself over the next century or so. A totally imaginary thing… ‘Blade Runner’ set in our home city.”

Easy to relate to that considering how often Detroit’s cityscape feels like “Blade Runner,” too.

In The Groove: Celebrating Patrick Cowley, new music from Eddie Chacon, Joe Webb, Pet Shop Boys

12 November 2024 at 23:06

I got an email from a listener today. They wrote: “way to get a grown man to cry at work with this drake tune lol.”

What an honor! And no, it wasn’t Drake the Canadian rapper — it was Nick Drake, the reclusive, mysterious English musician who sadly died at the age of 26 but left behind some insanely good music, like “Northern Sky.”

There’s also a new Boy Harsher remix of Pet Shop Boys, Eddie Chacon’s killer collab with John Carroll Kirby and a spiritual jazz epic courtesy of Work Money Death. Then, we make a brief but important pit stop exploring the new Dark Entries Records release of Patrick Cowley’s From Behind on the anniversary of the pioneering musician’s death (another talent gone far too soon). Lots of reasons to cry today on In The Groove.

Check the playlist below and listen to the episode for two weeks after it airs using the player above.

In The Groove: A farewell to Quincy Jones, an introduction to Cleo Sol

5 November 2024 at 00:32

Coming into this week with a heavy heart as we say goodbye to Quincy Jones, a musician so massive in the American sonic landscape of music that just calling him a musician seems insulting. I loved what WDET’s own Chris Campbell wrote about Jones — you can read that here. For my part, I played original work from Jones, his arranging for Frank Sinatra, his early stuff with an equally young Ray Charles, his work with Sarah Vaughn and of course Michael Jackson, who he changed the landscape of pop music with.

On top of that, a spotlight on Cleo Sol, her remarkable voice and her new single “Fear When You Fly,” plus new releases from Friko, Royal Otis, Ezra Collective, Common Saints, Michael Kiwanuka and more.

In The Groove: Mary Jane Dunphe, Tamar Aphek, Zamrock mixtape + your Halloween picks!

30 October 2024 at 23:05

The term “devil’s night” has been dead in Detroit for some years… but I do reference it because it went on for such a long time in this city (hence for the photo for this post). This show was a precursor to Halloween, when I’m really going to dive into music that feels like Halloween without actually being a Halloween song. You helped with these — huge thanks to your voicemails! I’ve noted which tracks are listener picks below.

Matt Johnson of The The talks new album, tour ahead of Detroit show

17 October 2024 at 17:56

London’s Matt Johnson has released records as The The since the early 1980s.

After a 25-year hiatus, he has returned to the studio to produce his first full The The album. Ensoulment sounds as relevant as ever, cinematic, and lyrically in tune.

Johnson joined me on In The Groove during my week as guest host, just as he arrived in Georgia to prepare for the United States’ leg of his current world tour. We discussed the new album, the life-threatening circumstance that led to The The’s first improvised song, “Linoleum Smooth to the Stockinged Foot,” and the meaning behind “Cognitive Dissident” — the first song released from Ensoulment.

We also spoke about the use of his music in films, including “Guardians of the Galaxy” and the new Francis Ford Coppola film, “Megalopolis.” Closing out the conversation is a thoughtful reflection on the role nostalgia plays in moving life forward.

The The will perform two sets at the Masonic Cathedral Theatre in Detroit on Wednesday, Oct. 23. The first set features the new album, and the second set is a retrospective of songs throughout The The’s discography until now.

Use the media player above to hear my entire conversation with Matt Johnson.

In The Groove: Jeff Parker’s jazz epic with ETA IVtet, spotlight on IDLES’ excellent ‘TANGK’

15 October 2024 at 19:56

After a lovely WDET Travel journey to Switzerland, I’m back in the fold and dropping new stuff from Nilufer Yanya, Julian Lage, Kokoroko, GOAT, Las Palabras & Angélica Garcia, plus lots more new discovery. Also had to put an artist spotlight on IDLES and their fantastic album from earlier this year, Tangk. I can’t stop listening to this more gentle take on post-punk from the group — definitely their best album yet. And it’s always a pleasure to play a jazz epic from Jeff Parker as he gets ready to release a new album later this year on International Anthem (I’ll be spotlighting this label later on this month).

    Live on WDET: Winestoned Cowboys

    26 September 2024 at 15:09

I knew Winestoned Cowboys were a band to watch when they dropped their excellent Live at the Old Miami debut album.

That’s bold to lead with the live product but a smart move I hope more local bands follow. As it stands, most bands struggle to recreate the sound on their album on the stage. And Winestoned Cowboys delivered.

This is cosmic country at its finest — a musical blend of roots, Americana and outlaw country first and foremost, with sarcastic lyrics about loss, drugs, drinking and everything else you’d expect to come out of a dusty old saloon that this band would probably play.

We had to invite Winestoned Cowboys in for a Live on WDET session to see if they could strike magic once again. The seven-piece didn’t disappoint. This is by far one of the best sessions we’ve welcomed — and I’m happy to say Winestoned Cowboys will be performing at WDET’s upcoming event at Batch Brewery on Friday, Oct. 18!

You can grab your tickets at wdet.org/events.

    Winestoned Cowboys is:

    • Matt Horne – vocals and guitar
    • Nick Cicchetti – bass
    • Brenda Mahler – vocals
    • Elliot Moses – high-strung acoustic guitar
    • Bob Monteleone – lead guitar
    • Jordan Siden – pedal steel guitar
    • John Porter – drums

In The Groove: Detroiters will forever miss the voice & rhythm of Frankie Beverly

    11 September 2024 at 20:55

Yet again giving our flowers to a talent we lost, a major one for Detroit, because I can’t think of an artist who wasn’t from here that was so beloved, adopted and adored by the Motor City.

Yes, I’m talking about Frankie Beverly, who died Tuesday at the age of 77. It was Marvin Gaye who took Beverly under his wing and helped him sign a deal with Capitol Records in 1977. I played some of that early material when it was Frankie Beverly’s Raw Soul (of course it became Frankie Beverly & Maze, which was Marvin Gaye’s suggestion). A true giant, who provided the ultimate summer soundtrack to cruising on Jefferson Avenue and a whole bunch of Belle Isle bangers. Rest in rhythm forever, Frankie!

On top of that, I continue my obsession with Tall Black Guy and his wonderful world of edits, new music from Bilal, Buddy, Demuja and more.

Check the playlist below and listen to the episode for two weeks after it airs using the player above.

In The Groove with Ryan Patrick Hooper playlist for Sept. 11, 2024

In The Groove: Ezra Collective, Claude Fontaine + a fond farewell for Sergio Mendes and Herbie Flowers

    9 September 2024 at 20:55

Today it’s first-time spins from Porridge Radio, Claude Fontaine, Supergrass, Special Interest, RAH & the Ruffcats, plus a special spotlight on Ezra Collective.

I also give a fond farewell for the man responsible with helping to bring Brazilian rhythms to America — the one and only Sergio Mendes — as well as an ultimate secret weapon on the bass, Herbie Flowers, who played on more than 500 hit records in his lifetime.
