Two men drown in separate incidents in Clarkston, Highland Twp over Fourth of July weekend

6 July 2025 at 20:07

Two Oakland County men drowned in two separate incidents over Fourth of July weekend that happened about 12 hours apart, according to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office.

The first drowning happened in Highland Township around 7 p.m., when Oakland County divers and Dive Group Strike Teams from Wayne, Lapeer, Genesee, Livingston, and Saginaw counties, as well as Shelby Township, looked for a man reported missing in White Lake.

The 911 caller said that 49-year-old Jason Brookshire, a White Lake resident, entered White Lake near the 3400 block of Jackson Boulevard. \

Divers found the man's body in seven feet of water and vegetation, about 100 feet from shore, several hours later. He was pronounced dead at the scene; officials say that alcohol appears to play a factor in the incident.

Less than 12 hours after this incident, the dive team was called to the 8400 block of Rattalee Lake just before 4 a.m. this morning. This is around the time that an 86-year-old Springfield Township man with dementia was reported missing. He had last been seen around 5 p.m. on Saturday night.

The man's body was found in a pond on the property.

The circumstances that led to both these drownings are being investigated, with autopsies set for both men on Monday.

Bicyclist killed in Pontiac hit-and-run, police searching for driver

4 July 2025 at 15:31

The Oakland County Sheriff's Office is looking for the driver who fled the scene after striking and killing a bicyclist in Pontiac.

We're told the crash happened just after 11 p.m. on Baldwin Avenue and Rundell Avenue.

Authorities say that a 31-year-old Pontiac man was riding his bike north on Baldwin when he was hit by the driver of a Jeep Grand Cherokee, who drove away without checking on the bicyclist. That bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police told us a witness followed the Grand Cherokee down a side street and saw the vehicle's driver and lone passenger get out of the car and flee into a silver Chevrolet Malibu.

The Grand Cherokee has since been impounded, with investigators saying that speed likely plays a factor in the crash.

We are seeking the publics help to locate and identify the individual involved in this hit-and-run fatal crash, Sheriff Michael Bouchard said. Obviously, basic humanity was not exhibited by leaving an individual to die in the street. We are seeking anyone with information that could help bring this individual to justice.

This is the second fatal hit-and-run crash to happen in Pontiac this year, with the first happening in May. In that incident, three people were hit, with one man getting killed and two woman getting hospitalized.

Operating While License Suspended, Revoked, or Denied Causing Death Two counts of Operating While License Suspended, Revoked, or Denied Causing Serious Injury One count of Failure to Stop at the Scene of an Accident While At Fault Causing Death Two counts of Failure to Stop at the Scene of an Accident Causing Serious Impairment

Thousands of people gathered at Clark Park in Detroit for a No Kings protest, one of about two thousand protests planned across the country.

Watch the full story from Carli Petrus in the video player below Thousands rally in Clark Park in Southwest Detroit for No Kings protest

Detroit Police confirmed to us after the protest that no one was arrested at today's rally.

According to a press release from No Kings, these protests have been organized to reject authoritarianism, billionaire-first politics, and the militarization of the country's democracy. According to an Associated Press report, the "No Kings" protests are being organized by the 50501 Movement, which, according to its website, stands for "50 protests. 50 states. One movement."

A handful of protestors spoke on a stage at the park; you can watch the speeches in full, including a speech from Rep. Rashida Tlaib, in the video player below.

"All of these fascist, unconstitutional, unlawful decisions only can be fought when we resist in the streets," Rep. Tlaib said. "We did not get the civil rights act because someone in congress woke up that day and said 'geez, that's a really good idea.' It's when people protest, they march, they Boycotted. Many of them, some of them lost their lives because my Black neighbors deserve human dignity."

This isn't the only No Kings protest happening in metro Detroit today; protests are also happening in Dearborn, Livonia, Farmington Hills, Ferndale, Novi, Roseville, Ann Arbor, Belleville, Troy, Waterford, Wyandotte, Romeo, Saline, Brighton and Milan. Today's Day of Defiance is expected to be the largest single-day mobilization since Trump returned to office, according to organizers.

These protests are happening on the same day as a planned military parade in Washington D.C. to celebrate the Army's 250th anniversary. It is also Trump's 79th birthday and Flag Day.

Those who disagree with the protestors, like Michigan Sen. Jim Runestad (R), say that Democrats and the city of Detroit are making Trump's plan of action more difficult by refusing to follow orders.

"(Detroit is) officially not a sanctuary city, but they're doing everything they can to thwart ICE," Runestad told us earlier this week. "Again, we have 40 million people coming into this country illegally, competing with housing for the working class. So working class in your lifetime is probably not going to be able to afford a house," he said.

Chinese citizen arrested at DTW after allegedly smuggling biological materials related to roundworms, U-M lab

9 June 2025 at 17:37

A Chinese citizen has been arrested and charged after federal investigators say she smuggled biological materials into the U.S. for her work at a University of Michigan laboratory, and lied about it to investigators.

Watch video reports from Darren Cunningham and Ryan Marshall: Chinese citizen arrest after smuggling biological materials related to U-M lab Chinese citizen arrested at DTW after allegedly smuggling biological materials related to roundworms, U-M lab

Chengxuan Han is listed in the criminal complaint. Per that complaint, which you can read in full at the bottom of this article, Han sent four packages to the United States from Wuhan that contained biological material. The packages were addressed to individuals connected to a lab at U-M.

Han was arrested at Detroit Metro Airport on Sunday, with investigators saying she arrived on a J1 visa. She is being held in law enforcement custody. A detention hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.

The feds say that Han made false statements to Customs and Border Protection Officers before ultimately admitting to the FBI that she sent the packages, which contained biological material related to roundworms.

The Department of Justice found that the content on Han's phone had been deleted three days before arriving in the U.S.

It should be noted that a criminal complaint is not evidence of guilt. Han awaits a trial as investigators determine whether or not to seek a federal indictment. The FBI, CBP, and ICE HSI are investigating the case.

The alleged smuggling of biological materials by this alien from a science and technology university in Wuhan, Chinato be used at a University of Michigan laboratoryis part of an alarming pattern that threatens our security. The American taxpayer should not be underwriting a PRC-based smuggling operation at one of our crucial public institutions," said United States Attorney Jerome Gorgon Jr. in a statement.

This is the second time this month that a Chinese national connected to biological pathogens and a U-M laboratory has been arrested by the FBI. According to the U.S. Attorneys Office, 34-year-old Zunyong Liu and 33-year-old Yunqing Jian smuggled in a fungus called Fusarium graminearum whose toxins can cause vomiting, liver damage, and reproductive defects in humans and livestock.

It is unclear at this time whether these two cases are connected, and whether or not they are linked to the same U-M lab.
