Businessman Perry Johnson announces 2026 candidacy for Michigan Governor

26 January 2026 at 12:31

Perry Johnson, a Republican businessman, announced his candidacy for Governor of Michigan on Monday morning.

Michigan families and small businesses deserve a government that works as hard as they do, Johnson said. We can deliver better services at lower cost by running state government with the same efficiency, accountability, and a results-driven mindset we used to help save the auto industry and businesses across the country.

Johnson previously ran for President of the United States in March of 2023, before dropping out six months later. He also ran for the Republican nomination for Governor of Michigan in 2021, with a $1.5 million ad campaign that was featured in Super Bowl LV. But he was left off the ballot after the state Court of Appeals denied his request to be reinstated, following disqualification after Perry was one of five GOP candidates accused of using fradulent ballot petition signatures.

You can learn more about Perry at his campaign website.

Red Wings analyst Mickey Redmond set to take time off for cervical spine infusion surgery

18 January 2026 at 19:03

Mickey Redmond, a former Red Wings player and color commentator for the team on the FanDuel Sports Network, is set to take an extended leave of absence for a medical procedure.

Redmond and the team announced the upcoming absence on Sunday afternoon, with tonight's game against the Ottawa Senators being his last in the broadcast booth for undisclosed amount of time.

In a statement released today, Redmond hopes to be back in time for potential postseason games.

"After tonight's game, I'll be taking some time away from my analyst duties as I address chronic neck issues that have led me to need cervical spine fusion surgery," he said in the statement. "It's never ideal to miss time during the season, but I was luckily able to line the procedure up with several nationally televised games and the Olympic Break. It's been an incredible season in Hockeytown, and I'm looking forward to being back behind the microphone for our exciting playoff run."

"Mickey has the full support of the Red Wings family, and we appreciate that he's prioritizing his health," the team said. "Mickey decided to wait on having this procedure until a time that was best for the broadcast, for the team and ultimately for the fans a great example of what an incredible teammate he is on and off the air. Everyone in the organization will keep him in our thoughts and will do anything needed to support his recovery."

Detroit woman sentenced to 18 months probation after making false bomb threats toward St. Clair Shores school

15 January 2026 at 17:13

A Detroit woman has been sentenced to an 18-month probation term, starting with 11 days in jail, after pleading guilty to making false bomb threats toward a St. Clair Shores school.

Crystal Royster, 42, was sentenced in Macomb County Circuit Court last week for False Report or Threat of a Bomb, a four-year felony. She pled guilty two months ago.

Prosecutors say that Royster made two false reports of a bomb at Lake Shore High School in St. Clair Shores in March of last year. She allegedly made the calls after her daughter was told she was not allowed to participate in the school play. We're told that, per school policy, she could not participate because she was sick and went home early that day.

Authorities say that more than 700 people were evacuated from the building before St. Clair Shores Police and other law enforcement officers cleared the school.

Royster was sentenced to 14 days in jail as part of her probation, getting credit for three days served.

The defendant was sentenced today for making a false bomb report that resulted in a significant emergency response. While the court determined that probation was the appropriate outcome, her actions nonetheless caused disruption and concern within the community, said Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido in a press release.
