Detroit’s dry spell: On track for the driest, dustiest September ever

Southeast Michigan is facing an exceptionally dry month, possibly setting a record for the driest September since weather tracking began, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). “It has now been 7 days since Detroit has seen a drop of rain,” NWS Detroit posted to X on Friday. “With only 0.06 [inches] so far this month and a dry forecast for the next 7 days (and possibly beyond), we could be on track for the driest September on record.”

Homecoming season is just around the corner and teenagers across metro Detroit are searching for the perfect outfit. Comerica Bank, in partnership with local nonprofit Jackets for Jobs, is hosting a two-day homecoming boutique to give away free dresses to local students. The event will be held at the Samaritan Center on Detroit’s east side from Sept. 14-15.

Savage X Fenty by Rihanna opens first Michigan store in Detroit

Detroit will soon welcome Michigan’s first Savage X Fenty store, the globally renowned lingerie and apparel brand by singer and businesswoman Rihanna known for “championing inclusivity, fearlessness, and confidence.” The new store will be located at 1442 Woodward Ave. in Detroit, a space owned by Bedrock, near other downtown shopping spots like H&M, Nike, and Lululemon. First announced in 2022, the store was originally planned to open in 2023.

Arab American National Museum receives $100,000 grant for powerful theater production

Dearborn’s Arab American National Museum, the world’s largest institution dedicated to Arab American history and culture, has received a $100,000 grant from the Joyce Foundation’s 2024 Joyce Awards. The funding, awarded in collaboration with writer, director, and performer Andrea Assaf, will support the development of DRONE, a live theater production exploring the ethical and human implications of drone warfare. The Joyce Awards, active since 2004, aim to support artists of color throughout the Great Lakes region in creating community-centered work.

Detroit has some of the ‘riskiest’ drivers in the U.S., according to Allstate

Apparently the Motor City is home to some of the country’s lousiest drivers. While not at the very bottom, Detroit was recently ranked 85th out of 100 major U.S. cities based on driving behaviors in a study conducted by Allstate. Honolulu, Hawaii had the safest driving behavior overall, followed by Minneapolis, Seattle, Portland, and Virginia Beach.

The dangerously fun giant metal slide on Detroit’s Belle Isle is reopening on Friday. To celebrate the occasion, visitors will have the opportunity to ride the six-lane slide for free from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. The event will also feature bounce houses for kids sponsored by Purple Heart Party Kids and Bouncing All Around Party Rentals.

Detroit People Mover to shut down after Labor Day for repairs

An average of 4,000 passengers ride Detroit’s People Mover every day. In September, the 2.9-mile, one-way rail system in downtown Detroit will shut down to replace a portion of original tracks that are 37 years old. Beginning after Labor Day, construction is estimated to last around 11 weeks, with a planned reopening in November before Thanksgiving Day.

It’s been chilly and rainy in metro Detroit since late Tuesday night, and it just keeps getting wetter. Remnants of Hurricane Beryl, the first hurricane of the 2024 season, are causing heavy rain over the Midwest, which will persist in Southeast Michigan throughout Wednesday as the storm moves over Lake Erie. A flood advisory has been issued for metro Detroit until 4 p.m., and a flood watch is in effect for most of Southeast Michigan until 8 p.m.

After an abundance of backyard fireworks across Detroit to celebrate the Fourth of July, the sky looks hazy, the air smells smoky, and the city is currently the most polluted in the country, according to data by IQ Air. For a short period late Thursday and early Friday, Detroit had the worst air quality in the world. Now, we’re in fourth place, following cities in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, and Pakistan.

Actor Hill Harper has been out and about in Detroit actively engaging with community members as he campaigns for the U.S. Senate seat held by Debbie Stabenow. As a progressive Democrat, Harper is working hard to gain momentum against three-term U.S. Representative and Democratic frontrunner Elissa Slotkin ahead of the Aug. 6 primary election. Recent polls indicate that Slotkin is leading by wide margins and is significantly ahead of Harper in fundraising.

Detroit’s only inner-city YMCA ends daycare and preschool offerings

In a letter to local families on Monday, the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit announced the closure of The Boll Family Early Learning Center at Detroit's Boll Family YMCA due to "a combination of factors that make its operations unsustainable." While the programs will continue through August 30 to allow families time to find alternative care, unfortunately, many childcare centers have wait lists that are months or even years long. Located right downtown, the Boll Family YMCA is Detroit's only inner-city YMCA, and childcare options in the area are   few and far between. "We understand this is a difficult and unexpected change for everyone," the letter says.

Michigan boosts efforts to keep invasive carp out of the Great Lakes

Michigan is home to 21% of the world’s fresh water, but in recent years the Great Lakes have had a problem with invasive carp. Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced on Monday that Michigan has signed an agreement in partnership with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Illinois to create the Brandon Road Interbasin Project — massively stepping up efforts to block pesky invasive fish from the Great Lakes. With $274 million in federal funds and $114 million in state funds secured for the first of three phases, the overall $1.15 billion project promises to make an impact.

If you missed Michigan Central Station's surreal star-studded concert of Detroit icons on Thursday, you still have plenty of opportunities to experience local art and entertainment at the historic landmark over the next 10 days. After a six-year restoration by Ford Motor Company costing nearly $1 billion, the train station is officially opening its doors to the public for the first time in nearly four decades. Detroit’s annual LGBTQ+ Pride festival is taking over Hart Plaza this weekend from June 8-9, and the event’s exciting entertainment lineup has just been announced. This year’s Motor City Pride will feature performances across four stages, showcasing emerging LGBTQ+ musicians, drag queens, and other entertainers. Highlights include Detroit DJs Problematic Black Hottie and Raedy Lex, RuPaul’s Drag Race season 15 star JAX, rapper Daisha McBride, and R&B and pop singer Kyle Dion, among many others.
