We are heartbroken for this loss, MSP Director Col. James F. Grady II said in a statement on Sunday. Traffic enforcement is dangerous work. The dedication of our motor carrier officers and troopers to keeping the public safe on our roadways is commendable and honorable. I knew it wasnt normal, because everything else went silent, said Jim Bush, a neighbor who lives near I-75. Everything else went silent, all the cars stopped, there was no noise after that, so I kind of figured that something had gone wrong.

I heard a big bang it kind of scared me a little bit, and I got up and everybody was running back there, said another neighbor.

Police say the motor carrier officer was inside his patrol vehicle and seat-belted in when it was hit. He was pinned inside the vehicle and had to be extricated from it.

Police are reminding drivers of the Move Over Law, which requires drivers to slow down at least 10 mph and fully move over into an open lane when approaching a stationary vehicle with flashing, rotating or oscillating lights activated. If you can't move over due to traffic, weather or road conditions, slow down at least 10 mph below the posted speed limit and pass with caution, allowing the authorized vehicle as much space as possible.

Michigan Supreme Court keeps Robert Kennedy on General Election ballot

9 September 2024 at 19:26

The Michigan Supreme Court in a 5 to 2 ruling has ordered that Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will be on the ballot in Michigan's General Election in November.

The court found that under Michigan law, there is no duty for Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson to remove Kennedy from the ballot.

The court's majority wrote, "Assuming, without deciding, that the Court of Appeals was correct in its interpretation of MCL 168.686a(4), plaintiff has neither pointed to any source of law that prescribes and defines a duty to withdraw a candidates name from the ballot nor demonstrated his clear legal right to performance of this specific duty, let alone identified a source of law written with such precision and certainty as to leave nothing to the exercise of discretion or judgment. Thus, the plaintiff has not shown an entitlement to this extraordinary relief, and we reverse."

The Supreme Court ruling came with a dissent from Justices David Viviano and Brian Zahra, who wrote, "The Secretarys duty to maintain the integrity of Michigan elections includes an obligation to present actual candidates and associate them with the offices that they are seeking. By requiring Kennedys name to appear on the general election ballot, the Secretary of State is improperly and needlessly denying the electorate a choice between persons who are actual candidates willing to serve if elected. We can only hope that the Secretarys misguided actionnow sanctioned with the imprimatur of this Courtwill not have national implications."

The Michigan Supreme Court's ruling comes after the state's Court of Appeals reversed a Court of Claims ruling that ordered Kennedy to remain on the ballot. Friday's Court of Appeals ruling said that while Kennedys request was made close to the deadline to give notice to local election officials, it wasnt so unreasonable as to deny relief to him.

Kennedy sued Benson on Aug. 30 to get off the ballot.

In a four-page ruling, the Court of Claims found that Kennedy could not be removed from the ballot as the nominee for President of the Natural Law Party because under Michigan Law candidates from minor parties cannot withdraw after accepting their party nomination.

Kennedy was chosen by the Natural Law Party at their conventional signed the official paperwork to be placed on the ballot. In it's ruling, the court said that by withdrawing his name from the ballot, Kennedy would be preventing them from fielding a candidate in Michigan in the General Election.

The Court of Claims also indicated in it's ruling that had Kennedy sought to get on the ballot through a petition drive, instead of accepting the nomination of a party, he would have been allowed to withdrawn.

(4) The state convention shall be held at the time and place indicated in the call. The convention shall consist of delegates selected by the county caucuses. The convention may fill vacancies in a delegation from qualified electors of that county present at the convention. The convention may nominate candidates for all state offices. District candidates may be nominated at district caucuses held in conjunction with the state convention attended by qualified delegates of the district. If delegates of a district are not present, a district caucus shall not be held for that district and candidates shall not be nominated for that district. Not more than 1 business day after the conclusion of the convention, the names and mailing addresses of the candidates nominated for state or district offices shall be certified by the chairperson and secretary of the state convention to the secretary of state. The certification shall be accompanied by an affidavit of identity for each candidate named in the certificate as provided in section 558 and a separate written certificate of acceptance of nomination signed by each candidate named on the certificate. The form of the certificate of acceptance shall be prescribed by the secretary of state. The names of candidates so certified with accompanying affidavit of identity and certificate of acceptance shall be printed on the ballot for the forthcoming election. Candidates so nominated and certified shall not be permitted to withdraw.

Kennedy withdrew from the presidential race and endorsed former President Donald Trump in late August.

3-year-old boy shoots himself in face with mom's unsecured gun, is expected to be OK

6 September 2024 at 23:46

A 3-year-old boy accidentally shot himself in the face after getting his hands on an unsecured gun on Detroit's east side on Friday.

It happened around 4:30 p.m. on St. Patrick Avenue near Elmo Street.

The bullet grazed the boys face. He was taken to the hospital and is expected to be OK but remains in critical condition as of Friday night.

Police say the childs mom briefly set her gun on the counter and thats when the boy shot himself. There was also a locked gun box inside of the home but was not used at the time.

It only takes a minute, less than a minutes, seconds. You have to secure these weapons, Detroit Police Department Chief James White said. Youve got curious kids, a 3-year-old toddler roaming around. They see you put a gun down, theyre probably going to pick it up just like anything else.

With Michigan's gun storage law that took effect this year, White said they're looking into charging the mom with improper storage of a firearm.

Meanwhile, residents hope gun owners lock up their weapons responsibly and these incidents can come to an end.

You want kids not to see guns in the first place," neighbor Lorenzo Hardy said. "The biggest thing is please lock your guns up. It doesnt make sense for anybody to be hurt.

The cause of explosion is under investigation but Clapp said typically this happens where there is a build up of steam and something ignites the steam, causing the manhole cover to pop up.

Should school start before or after Labor Day? Metro Detroit parents weigh in

27 August 2024 at 10:02

It was only a few years ago that students didn't go to school until after Labor Day. But in recent years, districts decided to let out for the summer earlier, due to heat concerns.

7 News Reporter Meghan Daniels took to the streets to see what parents think about this. The parents we spoke to are divided. Some say, there is no good reason for kids to be in school this early, while others say, they should go back earlier.

"They're coddled enough," said Canada Foster, a mother of seven. "They need to know, hey, sometimes it's hot you need to work, sometimes it's cold you have to work."

Foster just moved back to Detroit from Texas and she's thrilled with the early start.

"My kids get a couple more weeks of education they don't have that long summer break where they forget everything."

She says in her opinion, the days before Labor Day are a great way to get kids reacclimated to their school schedules.

"Just a quick refresher before school actually kicks off is perfect for me. This is the best that they've had so far."

But Teandra Brown disagrees.

"They should have just waited until this week to start school instead of this week if they knew it was going to be hot," said Brown, a mother of one.

She says her son should have enjoyed one last week of summer, especially if the school day would be cut short due to the heat.

"It's just a waste of time, Waste of uniform, waste of lunches," Brown continued.

Many parents told us that while they can't control the weather, they feel situations like this are completely avoidable by having air conditioning in all school buildings.

Local doc charged with sex crimes; accused of filming kids, adults at swim school, hospitals & more

20 August 2024 at 13:44

A metro Detroit doctor is facing several charges for allegedly explicitly filming people in several different areas of hospitals, homes and other places.

Β

Officials also say the suspect allegedly sexually abused some of his victims on camera.

Oumair Aejaz, 40, is charged with one count of child sexually abusive activity, four counts of capturing/distributing an image of an unclothed person and five counts of using a computer to commit a crime.

VIDEO: Hear from Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard in the video below: Local doc accused of filming kids, adults at swim school, hospitals & more

Its alleged that Aejaz placed hidden cameras in changing rooms, bathrooms, hospital rooms, closets, bedrooms, bathrooms and closets of residences he had access to.

According to Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard, the victims range from children as young as two years old all the way up to adults.

Bouchard said Aejaz was a contract physician who went to different locations, and they have executed a number of search warrants.

So far, police say they have seized six computers, four phones and 15 external storage drives. One of those hard drives alone reportedly has 13,000 videos on it.

According to Bouchard, due to the lengthy amount of time hes been allegedly involved in this activity, they believe there is more to be uncovered and they believe there are more victims out there.

Those who believe they may be a victim or may have information are asked to email OCSOSIU@oakgov.com.

According to Oakland County Prosecutor, the case stems from a mom bringing her child to a swim school and that the suspect was filming them from another changing stall.

Aejaz was arrested on Aug. 8 and was arraigned on those charges on Aug. 13 and given a $2 million bond.

RELATED VIDEO: Watch the full press conference with Bouchard and McDonald below: FULL PRESS CONFERENCE: Officials announce charges against Michigan doctor for alleged sex crimes

The victimization is so broad and the perversion so great that were just beginning to wrap our arms around it. Disturbing on so many levels. Its hard to look at the videos of that activity. Where a woman is basically unconscious in a hospital bed. A 2-year-old thinking theyre out for a swim day, Bouchard said. Theres nobody thats out of bounds for this sick, sick activity.

McDonald said the case is extremely disturbing and that most of the activity took place in the Rochester and Rochester Hills areas.

She said that those charges are only related to the victims they know about so far but they know there will be many more victims coming forward. Those are a 2-year-old, a 4-year-old and two women.

According to McDonald, the hospitals where he allegedly worked are cooperating and want to work with law enforcement to hold him accountable.

I cant stress enough the amount of hours and hours of work it takes for the computer crimes section of the sheriffs office, and they have been doing that for almost around the clock for a week, McDonald said.

Bouchard said that it could take six months for the detectives to go through all the evidence. He said the suspect was using a variety of camera options.

According to Bouchard, Aejaz has worked at Ascension Gensys Hospital in Grant Blanc and Henry Ford Macomb Hospital. He's an Indian citizen who came to the U.S. in 2011 for an internship and did his residency at Sinai Grace. He moved to Alabama and then moved back to metro Detroit.
