Massive Detroit Lions & Dan Campbell corn maze set to open on Sept. 28

5 September 2024 at 15:10

We first covered this story back in July. Now, the Choice Farm Market said the corn maze will open on Sept. 28.

Tickets are $14.99 and Lions season ticket holders are $12.99. Tickets include a corn maze, cow train, pumpkin house, fall photo ops, a culvert slide and more.

The Detroit Lions hype this season is going to be unreal. In fact, it's already started with a massive corn maze in Webberville.

Loretta Benjamin is the co-owner of Choice Farm Market, where the maze has been created.

"We knew at the end of last season that the Lions were going to be our theme this year," she told our team.

Benjamin said she and her family have been planning the Dan Campbell-inspired Detroit Lions corn maze since last February.

"We chose the lion because we thought the mane would be a great maze on it. And then it just popped in my head: well, lets put Dan Campbell on that lion head, how fitting," she said.

Benjamin shared that the maze wasn't supposed to be announced until it opens in September. It's not even completely done yet. But the rather large cat is out of the bag two months early due to Lions fandom, and a passing pilot.

"Somebody, apparently, had flown over and taken a picture and put it out on social media, and it went viral," Benjamin said. "Its phenomenal phenomenal. Weve had a couple of the Lions players actually like our Facebook page with the post on there."

The Detroit Lions NFL Instagram account even shared an image of the maze captioning it, "Just...wow."

Benjamin said the maze designer created it using GPS coordinates.

"It took a good 12 hours because they were out there after dark," she said.

When the maze opens on Sept. 28, there will be Detroit Lions-themed photo opportunities and interactive games like trivia waiting for guests between the corn stalks.

When asked if she thinks the success of the corn maze is a precursor to what the Lions' success will be this season, Benjamin said, "Yes, this is a sign. We are fortunate we can legitimately talk about a Super Bowl."

Detroit Lions PR imposter starts texting Michigan mom after TikTok post

30 August 2024 at 20:53

A lot of people would love to go to a Detroit Lions game this season. So, when a Michigan mom with a social media following had someone reach out saying they worked with the Lions and wanted to gift her tickets she believed them, until things got weird.

Many of you know the pure joy of being at a Detroit Lions game.

For 9-year-old Easton, its his favorite thing in the world. Knowing that, his mom, Lisa Kryger, posted this video to social media leading up to Eastons 10th birthday in the hopes that Amon-Ra St. Brown would send him a birthday wish:

Lisa's TikTok video asking for a Lions birthday wish for her son

"People were tagging the Lions," said Lisa.

The video got over 80,000 views and a direct message that gave Lisa hope.

"It looked like a real profile honestly," said Lisa.

A person claiming to be friends with a Lions "PR girl" messaged Lisa, writing that they wanted to get her family a suite for a game and a meet and greet with Amon-Ra St. Brown.

The person then asked if their friend, the Lions PR girl" could text Lisa, and thats when things got really weird.

"First she asked a little bit about me, asked me kind of ... odd questions, but not too odd, I was like oh she just wants to know a little bit more about us,'" said Lisa.

The person texted Lisa a story about their supposed 6-year-old son, saying they were a Tigers fan who died from cancer, they sent a picture of a young woman posing on Ford Field, saying this was who they are, and then they set a time for Lisa and her son to meet them to go to a game.

"I was like, oh, can my husband go?' And theyre like I dont know,'" said Lisa.

Thats when she started to get suspicious and tried to ask more questions.

"I reached back to the girl that originally connected me with her on TikTok and I said hey, I dont know whats going on, but this just doesnt seem real, and they blocked me," said Lisa. Both on social media and at the phone number.

I reached out to the Detroit Lions PR team who told me the picture the fraudster sent is one of a former Lions employee.

But they say that former employee was not messaging Lisa no one knows who really was.

With all the hype around this upcoming season, the Detroit Lions tells us if anyone gets contacted by someone claiming to be with the Detroit Lions, they can call this phone number to verify: (313) 262-2000.

"After reading all the messages ... I think it could have been so much more," she said.

At one point, Lisa even offered to pay this fraudster money and they declined.

So what were they after? We may never know.

As far as her number one Lions fan, Easton, his golden birthday is coming up on October 10, and Lisa still hopes to make it extra special for him.

"We just wanted him to comment on the video saying 'happy birthday,'" said Lisa.

If you want to reach out to Lisa, you can contact her at Lisabarnes838@yahoo.com.

For the first time the Big House will sell alcohol at their football games: Tour how it will work

29 August 2024 at 22:15

Starting August 31, the Big House is going to sell alcohol at their football games.

Michael Jordan, the self-proclaimed greatest of all time when it comes to food and beverage, and the one in charge of it at UM, told 7 News Detroit about 110,000 fans come to Michigan football games.

He said that to adequately serve the of age fans who are interested in buying alcohol, the stadium has set up 600 tanks full of beverages surrounding the stadium.

In addition to the tanks Jordan said they will also have "brew-thru"s set up which are locally made, self-serve beverage and snack check-outs that will have Michigan beers and be monitored.

"These things are incredibly quick, they really help get guests through the line," said Jordan.

He said the Michigan team has spent months coming up with a plan to distribute alcohol as the Big House was built in 1927 and doesn't have the built-in space for this quantity of beverages, or food, to be sold.

"In a lot of these spaces we found a place where we could tuck in new locations, or turn locations that may have been one person selling water, into a place where we can sell beer, water, popcorn and make it a little more," said Jordan.

Ashton Wright is a senior at UM who told us he plans to buy alcohol this season, "My plan is getting in there and buying two, one for the first half, one for the second."

Jacqueline Aguiar is also a UM student over the age of 21 who told us, "I think a lot of people pre-game so hard so they can last through the game, and I think its safer especially in the heat to just get a few drinks there."

Interestingly enough, this National Institute of Health study cites that alcohol-related incidents at college stadium games have been found to decrease when alcohol is sold within the stadium.

To make sure minors aren't served, Jordan said those 21 and over who are buying drinks will be given wristbands at games.

He also said, "We are going to bring in about 400 people to sell beer."

That's 400 new jobs, not including warehouse workers or all the alcohol compliance team workers.

The trend of selling alcohol at college football games is growing.

In 2023 Michigan State, Kentucky, and Stanford began selling alcohol at their football games, we'll find out Saturday how it is received at Michigan.

It's a back-to-school roller coaster for Michigan families as weather causes classes to cancel

29 August 2024 at 02:46

"Im reaching out to inform you that due to the extreme temperatures forecasted for the next two days, we will be implementing half day schedules."

That's a part of the voicemail mom Amy Rumrill received from American Montessori Academy in Westland that started her family's roller coaster back-to-school week.

"Its been interesting to say the least," Rumrill told 7 News Detroit.

She said she's received four voicemails this week just for her daughter Ella who just started sixth grade at American Montessori Academy.

"Monday she had a half day and then she was supposed to have a full day Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday," Rumrill said.

Spoiler alert! That didn't happen.

Rumrill said that on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday were changed to half days due to the excessive heat.

Then, the weather looked better and Wednesday was changed back to a full day.

But, don't get too comfortable!

After Tuesday night's powerful storms, at 5:30 a.m. Wednesday, the back-to-school roller coaster twisted upside down and school was canceled for Wednesday.

At this point, Ella still hasn't had a full day. When we asked her how she feels about that, she said "sad."

Ellla has an older brother Carter who is starting ninth grade at Loyola High School.

He had school canceled entirely on Tuesday.

"I was excited to meet all the new teachers and stuff, but that never happened," Carter said.

Fortunately for Rumrill, she's self-employed, so she has been able to make the last-minute adjustments work, but she knows it's been a headache for many other parents across Southeast Michigan.

Detroit Public Schools Community District and Eastpointe Community Schools had half days this week due to excessive heat.

Southfield Public Schools closed entirely Tuesday.

Rumrill said she's hoping the rest of the school year goes smoother but as we all know, you can't exactly get off the ride that is Michigan weather.

We'll cross our fingers as the back-to-school roller coaster continues.

"Basically, every day is different," Ella said.

Former President Donald Trump's speech at Detroit National Guard convention draws mixed reaction

26 August 2024 at 22:16

There was mixed reaction from military members and their families Monday as former president Donald Trump delivered remarks at the 146th National Guard general convention at Huntington Place in Detroit.

Although both Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris were invited, only Trump came.

After listening to his speech, Puerto Rico National Guard member Hector Ocasio told 7 News Detroit, "For me personally, his message was a message of encouragement for the military forces and their families."

Tanairi Ochoamartinez who is a wife to a National Guard member said, "It was a little bit disappointing to see NAGAUS becoming so politicized, an event where soldiers are supposed to only see red which is their blood."

Trump's speech began with an introduction from Kid Rock who said, "A huge military salute and welcome to our 45th, and soon to be 47th, president of the United States, President Donald J. Trump."

Once on stage Trump immediately dove into how he would support the National Guard if he is elected in November.

He said, "When Im back in the White House Ill get you the support, funding, training, and equipment you need. And I will get you the pay raises that you really deserve."

In reaction, Ocasio told 7 News Detroit, "For real I do feel encouraged, his message inspired me."

Trump also focused on his recent endorsement from RFK Jr., his experience working with the military during his term as president, and what he sees as looming danger with international relations.

He said he believes we've never been closer to World War III, and continued on to talk about potential conflict.

"We do a lot of reports that are stupid reports. Like a report that came out a couple weeks ago that we would lose in a war with China, you saw that report?" questioned Trump. "You dont do reports that we are going to lose to China in a war. Stupid people do that, like the people that are in office right now."

In response to statements like this Ochoamartinez said, "The message was very divided, he never mentioned unity, he never mentioned working together as one, it set the tone for separation."

In the past the military vote has leaned Republican, however, some question if that is beginning to change.

"November 5th will be the most important day, in my opinion, in the history of the country," said Trump.

The former president is scheduled to be back in Michigan Thursday to visit Potterville and talk enconomy and manufacturing.

Livingston County Sheriff's Office accused of breaking campaign finance law by hosting Trump visit

23 August 2024 at 22:18

The Michigan Bureau of Elections is now investigating allegations that the Livingston County Sheriff's Office violated the state's Campaign Finance Act by hosting former President Donald Trump this week.

On Tuesday Livingston County Sheriff Michael Murphy and his department hosted Trump for a "press conference," but thousands of residents online took issue saying they found it largely inappropriate.

Now we're learning it may also be against Michigan law.

"Folks tend to be very very passionate about politics," said Sheriff Michael J. Murphy in a Facebook video he posted previewing the event.

7 News Detroit reached out to Research Professor Emeritus at The Center for Political Studies at the University of Michigan, Michael Traugott, to ask if he has ever heard of a sheriff's department doing something like this in the past.

Traugott responded, "Well its not very common because of the fact that its illegal."

He's referring to the Michigan Campaign Finance Act which says public body or a person acting for a public body shall not use or authorize the use of funds, personnel, office space, computer hardware or software, property, stationery, postage, vehicles, equipment, supplies, or other public resources to support political candidates.

7 News Detroit reached out the Sheriff Murphy asking for an interview and he gave our team the following statement, "I dont believe I violated the Campaign Finance Act. I welcome the investigation."

Traugott said Sheriff Murphy has been found guilty of breaking campaign finance laws before in 2018 and was fined $100 to the state and another $100 to the county.

"Which is essentially just a slap on the wrist and, obviously, didnt dissuade him from doing this again," said Traugott.

The controversy comes as on August 7 JD Vance held an event at the Shelby Township Police Department to "deliver remarks."

JD Vance blasts Kamala Harris on illegal immigration in Shelby Township

Traugott said he believes these events are being called "remarks" and "press conferences" to avoid being labeled political events.

He added that if Sheriff Murphy is found in violation of the Michigan Campaign Finance Act there is a fine of up to $1,000 and, "In the end, the voters will have to decide how they feel about this because hes an elected official."

Once a determination in the investigation is made, it will be made public here.

Woodward cruisers share the stories behind their retro cars 3 days before the Dream Cruise

14 August 2024 at 21:37

If you really know the Woodward Dream Cruise, you know it isn't just about the cars, it's about the people and the stories behind them as well.

One of those people is Ray Miller from Farmington Hills. He attends the Dream Cruise every year with his 1959 Corvette he bought back in 1970 at the age of 13.

"At the time it didnt have a motor in it that ran, it had no interior in it, it had a busted frame, frame was rotted out, so I restored it," said Miller.

Little did he know at the time that his first car, the one he poured countless hours into, would carry him through life's ups and downs.

Miller said when he got married, "I was 25 and we had it in the wedding party."

Now the 'vette is carrying him and his wife Sue all the way into retirement.

"I've had people interested saying, 'How much would you sell it for?" said Miller. "I tell them I'd never sell it, and it's true, I'd never sell it."

Now the $500 Corvette is priceless.

Stories like this are a large part of what makes the Woodward Dream Cruise special to the over 1 million car enthusiasts who attend.

Like Maritia McGhee-White from Oak Park who told 7 News Detroit, "When you put cars together with the history of the individuals that own them, Im in heaven."

Gary Hogness spends most of the Cruise outside Duggans on Woodward Avenue with his restored 1973 Volkswagen Beetle.

When asked what he feels when driving it, he said; "It takes me back to when I was 16 years old and the music's loud. It takes you back, its a time machine as it were. Anybody who is a hippie out there knows."

To Hogness, the Dream Cruise is just like his Volkswagen, pure nostalgia rumbling down Woodward Avenue.

"Takes you back in time, every time I drive it, I love it," said Hogness.

Treasure seekers hit the road for 'Michigan's Longest Garage Sale'

9 August 2024 at 20:54

Right now, hundreds of people are traveling along US-12 in southern Michigan searching for hidden gems, participating in what's billed as Michigan's longest garage sale.

Friday through Sunday is the US 12 Heritage Trail Garage Sale, which is a trail of garage sales that run from Detroit all the way to New Buffalo.

More than 200 miles of hidden treasures await!

Shari Wilcox, who is taking part in the garage sale, described the "creepy dolls that give you a little scary look if you look too close."

Tom Miller said he hits the garage sale annually.

"Oh this was a kind of unique item here. This was a gummy maker," he said.

Shari said people start in Ypsilanti at the "crack of dawn" and then move as far west as they can along US-12.

Tom said he'll probably hit about 20 to 25 garage sales Friday.

Rhonda Wolff said she's done it at least four or five times.

Along the trail, youll find a bit of everything, and I mean everything.

"What do you think the oddest thing you have here is?" I asked.

"Id say the oddest thing might have to be these guys right here," Harry said.

One might describe them as little devil angel babies.

"Some people like them, some people think theyre cute," he said.

Homeowners take part in the sale. Shari said she's had between 80 people to 100 people there in about three or so hours.

Business owners participate, too.

"A lot of them make, from what Ive been told, 40% of their money for the year," said Brian Shockley, who was shopping along the sale.

Many mark it in their calendar as a holiday.

"Its not a birthday present or anything like that. Its a 'what did you find junkin?'" said Tom.

But many tell me its the memories along the way that are the real treasure.

You have until Sunday to come look for treasures yourself.

What you need to know before casting your state primary election ballot

5 August 2024 at 20:38

On Monday, 7 News Detroit asked a handful of Detroit voters if they felt confident that they knew who all the candidates on the primary election ballot were.

The overwhelming answer?

"Not really."

It's a common circumstance.

Some Detroit voters like Sharif Bacon vote absentee from home just to avoid it.

"The ones that I didnt know, like the proposals and stuff like that, I researched," said Bacon. "Especially like the library millage and stuff like that."

VIDEO: Do you know what Proposal L is? The proposal decides the future of the Detroit Public Library Do you know what Proposal L is? The proposal that decides the future fate of the Detroit Public Library

If you're voting in person Tuesday and you want to look up who and what will be on your ballot ahead of time, you can.

You can look at a sample ballot on the Secretary of State's website.

Armed with knowing who or what to vote for, you're just left to make sure you vote correctly.

Detroit City Clerk Janice Winfrey told 7 News Detroit the most common mistake she sees is voters "mixing the ticket."

"In other words on the partisan section, you have to choose one, Democrat or Republican," explained Winfrey.

RELATED: Check out our election coverage here

The point of the primary election is to narrow down which candidate will run for their party in the November election.

You have to vote all Republican or all Democrat, you can't "mix the ticket." If you do, it will be thrown out.

Winfrey said, "You cannot do that in the primary, you can in the general, but not in the primary."

If you haven't decided whether you're voting Tuesday or not, you have until 8 p.m. on election day.

You can register to vote, and vote, in the same visit at your city or township clerk's office.
