The top stories to know about Ontario premier threatens to ban US-made alcohol if Trump tariffs take effect Ontario premier threatens to ban US-made alcohol if Trump tariffs take effect

Its a Thursday night out in Windsor and like most bars along the border, shelves at Leftys on the O are stocked with both Canadian and American alcohol.

The bar's owner Jim Arbour learned Thursday about a potential ban on the sale of American-made alcohol in Ontario.

It doesn't really worry me because a lot of our alcohol products are bottled in Canada or Europe, so I can't see it affecting us a ton, Arbour said. "We're gonna have some American ones like Jim Beam, Jack Daniels. We'll just have to see how it goes when they do that.

While many American beer brands sold in Canada are also bottled in Canada, bourbon like Woodford Reserve, Jack Daniels and Jim Beam come from the U.S.

The threat from Ontarios Premier Doug Ford comes in response to President-elect Donald Trump's promise of sweeping tariffs on Canada including a 25% tax on all imports from Canada.

If he comes out and says he's gonna tariff everything, that's a big problem," Ford said during a press conference. "It's a big problem for Canadians, it's a big problem for Americans as well.

'This is quite challenging.' Harsens Island residents left without water after underwater main break 'Quite challenging.' Harsens Island residents left without water after break

A water main break has halted running water going towards Harsens Island, according to officials.

Residents of Clay Township got a push alert Thursday morning from St. Clair County Homeland Security and Emergency Management, saying that the water main break is "causing complete loss of service to Harsens Island."

According to an official with St. Clair County Homeland Security and Emergency, the sole water pipeline that runs under the north channel, that provides the entire water supply for Harsens Island, broke underwater.

They are not able to put a diver into Lake St. Clair to assess the damage and possible repair options, as the conditions in the water are too dangerous. There are three-foot waves on the lake right now due to the winds

Donna Halacoglu, who lives on the north channel, said she noticed overnight that the water wasn't working and she called the non-emergency line and learned others on the island were without water.

"We can stay in our homes, but we can't use the bathroom facilities or shower, so I really don't know," Halacoglu said when asked what their plan is if the water is shut off for longer than a few days.

"This is quite challenging. We have the river in front of us so we can use that for toilets and to flush," Jackie Beyer said. "I can only do this for a few days, but I have animals at home."

Michigan reports 1,500+ whopping cough cases, up from 110 in 2023 Michigan reports 1,500+ whopping cough cases, up from 110 in 2023

Veronica McNally from West Bloomfield has made it her life's work to talk about vaccines and pertussis, also known as whooping cough.

She told 7 News Detroit that she and her husband decided to do so on the car ride to their daughter Francesca Marie's funeral in 2012. Their 3-month-old died battling whooping cough.

"This disease hit Francesca like a Mack truck," McNally said. "There was no medical intervention that was possible. She had the best care available there was no medical intervention that was possible that was going to save her life."

McNally bares her soul and shares her heartbreak to advocate for vaccines. She did so Thursday as the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services has seen over 1,500 cases of whooping cough this year. That's more than 13 times what they saw in 2023, when the state saw 110 cases.

"Pertussis cases in general are up across the country," said Ryan Malosh, director of the Division of Immunizations at the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

Medical leaders across the state are aware of the concerning trend.

Malosh said it comes as whooping cough vaccines are being administered 3% less than in January of 2020, and as two-thirds of whooping cough patients either never had the vaccine or haven't received it in the past five years.

Some victims of Orion Township condo explosion still looking for pets that ran away Pets still missing weeks after condo explosion in Orion Township

Since the explosion on November 19th, Drake Falconer has spent most of his days searching the surrounding area for his cats, still missing, Fergus and Ambrose.

Its kind of, I guess, a survival tactic just to keep from sitting here and dreading everything every time we come around," Falconer said. Thats my wife and I's first pets together. Theyre family. Theyre not just animals that you toss by the wayside. These are part of our lives, and its a big hole in our heart thats missing when we dont see them every day.

Chloe Bennett also lost her home in the explosion, and, like Falconer, she is most focused on finding her black cat, Salem. She says firefighters told her he jumped out of the rubble.

Something you dont think about it is, like, its even hard to just get dressed in the morning because you dont know what you have," Bennett said. Im staying hopeful through everything, but its like one letdown after the other.

If you remember, a cat was found one day after the explosion. We got the reunion between Ross Flore and his cat Snicker on camera.

It turns out Snicker was not okay. Flore said she suffered severe neurological damage in the blast and had to be put down.

At least she died in my arms and not in the condo," Flore said. Im not one that I let loose with my emotions. I usually pretty much hold it in check but that was my little girl.

U-M regent says home & car were vandalized overnight while family was sleeping

9 December 2024 at 17:52

University of Michigan Regent Jordan Acker said his home and his car were vandalized overnight.

Acker posted photos on social media showing his wife's car vandalized with graffiti that says "Divest" and "Free Palestine" and said that two bricks were thrown through the windows of their home.

"This is a threat, okay, and this is a threat that Hamas does when they're going to kill people," Acker said.

See doorbell footage from a neighbor in the video below Doorbell footage shows suspects vandalizing U-M regent's home

"Kowing what this is yourself, what's that like when you see that on your vehicle at your home?" 7 News Detroit Reporter Carli Petrus asked.

"It tells you exactly what I've been saying for months about this group is that they're targeting me because I'm Jewish," he said.

The University of Michigan Office of Public Affairs released a statement on Monday that said in part, "The University of Michigan condemns these criminal acts in the strongest possible terms. They are abhorrent and, unfortunately, just the latest in a number of incidents where individuals have been harassed because of their work on behalf of the university. This is unacceptable and will not be tolerated."

Huntington Woods police said they are investigating the case, and are asking anyone with information to call them. They are also asking residents to check any surveillance video or doorbell cameras and report any findings.

"As a parent, it's the first thing you think about. The first thing I thought about was, oh my god, what are my girls, do they hear this. Do they know what's going on? This is an attack on my family," Acker told 7 News Detroit on Monday.

Acker's neighbor, Jeff Horner, said he found out about the attack on Monday morning.

"It's very dangerous, it's a huge violation of trust when your property is vandalized and the windows are broken and I certainly hope that some form of justice is served," Horner said.

Acker is now calling on the Michigan Attorney General and the FBI to arrest those responsible.

"People who engage in behavior like this should go to jail regardless of whether you agree with them on the underlying issues or not," he said.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer released a statement on Monday afternoon that says, "The antisemitic vandalism of University of Michigan Regent Jordan Ackers home and car is unacceptable. This was a criminal act of targeted hatred on an elected officials personal property because he is Jewish. We cannot allow hateful acts to further fan the flames of division. We must come together and rise above."

In June, the law office of Goodman Acker was vandalized. More from that story below

It appears the spray-painted messages on the law office in June were targeting Acker.

"FREE PALESTINE," "DIVEST NOW," and "UM KILLS" were among the messages scrawled across the front of the building and the sidewalk on Ten Mile Road in Southfield. An obscenity directed at Acker was also included in the vandalism.

Make no mistake, that targeting individual Jewish elected officials is anti-semitism. This has nothing to do with Palestine or the war in Gaza or anything else this is done as a message to scare Jews," Acker said back in June.

Acker said, This kind of hate action is not acceptable, targeting of individual Jews is not acceptable. Period."

Michigan AG announces human trafficking ring bust in metro Detroit

6 December 2024 at 20:08

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced on Friday a human trafficking ring bust in metro Detroit that is believed to be among the largest uncovered in the state.

VIDEO: Michigan AG announces human trafficking ring bust in metro Detroit Michigan AG announces human trafficking ring bust in metro Detroit

The investigation, Nessel said, began in the summer of 2024 and included several law enforcement partners at the local, state and federal levels.

Officials say search warrants were executed throughout Wayne and Macomb counties, and seven to nine women of Chinese and Korean origin were rescued. The ring reportedly involved massage parlors in Detroit, Highland Park, St. Clair Shores and Sterling Heights.

This operation has put an end to a significant human trafficking ring, as large as any weve uncovered in the State of Michigan, Nessel said in a statement. I am grateful, and thankful, to the many excellent partners my office has had on this investigation. These arrests, the takedown of four illicit massage parlors, and the liberation of these victims of human trafficking today in our communities were the result of an awesome effort by several law enforcement agencies. These charges and this operation make it clear that Michigan will be no harbor for the vile trafficking trade for forced labor, sexual or otherwise.

For those who work near one of the locations that was raided, Magic Health Spa on 8 Mile near Lahser roads, theyre not surprised to hear what the business was allegedly up to.

"I've seen the police go there before, said Darrone Hereford, who works as a barber nearby. "I heard it was a massage parlor."

It's not a traditional massage," said Aaran who works nearby. "They (customers) are walking in hoods up, kinda tucked away. You know an unsavory business when you see one.

The Attorney General also making it clear that there are likely many more businesses like these out there, that only survive because customers keep them in business.

"If you are frequenting an illicit massage parlor, you are creating more victims," Nessel said. "We want to make sure people understand this is not a victimless crime. It's very much a crime that involves people that are victims of some of the most horrendous behavior you could imagine.

The arrests and charges are as follows as reported by the AG's office:

Jingyu Jin, a 45-year-old Chinese national Conducting a Criminal Enterprise, a 20-year felony;  Conspiracy to Commit Conducting a Criminal Enterprise, a 20-year felony;  Accepting Earnings from Prostitution, a 20-year felony;  Transportation for the purposes of Prostitution, a 20-year felony;  Money Laundering, a 10-year felony; and,  Keeping a House of Prostitution, a 5-year felony.  Huazi Piao Conducting a Criminal Enterprise;   Conspiracy to Commit a Criminal Enterprise;  Accepting Earnings from Prostitution;  Money Laundering; and  2 counts of Keeping a House of Prostitution   Jon Villasurda, of Clinton Township, a Michigan resident and American citizen.  Conducting a Criminal Enterprise;  Conspiracy to Commit Conducting a Criminal Enterprise; and  Transportation in service of Prostitution.  Oumar Lougue, a 53-year-old non-citizen from West Africa.  Conducting a Criminal Enterprise;  Conspiracy to Commit Conducting a Criminal Enterprise;  Accepting Earnings from Prostitution; and  Keeping a House of Prostitution.  Ming Li, a 59-year-old undocumented immigrant.  Conducting a Criminal Enterprise;  Conspiracy to commit a Criminal Enterprise; and  2 counts of Keeping a House of Prostitution.

AAA's 'Tow to Go' program is back for Thanksgiving weekend

28 November 2024 at 01:59

AAA is once again offering its "Tow to Go" program for the Thanksgiving holiday weekend to help keep impaired drivers off the road.

The Auto Club Group program has been providing transportation for would-be impaired drivers and their vehicles for more than 25 years.

AAA says the program runs from 6 p.m. Wednesday through 6 a.m. Monday in Michigan. However, AAA is reminding drivers that using the program should be a last resort.

This is how the program works: someone calls Tow to Go and AAA dispatches a tow truck to bring the would-be driver and their vehicle to a safe location within a 10-mile radius.

The phone number for the service is 855-286-9246.

Tow to Go serves as that last line of defense in keeping impaired drivers off the road, said Adrienne Woodland, a spokeswoman with AAA The Auto Club Group. If you plan to consume alcohol or drugs this weekend, make plans for a safe ride home first. If your plans fall through, you can call AAA and well get you to a safe place.

The service is also available in Florida; Georgia; Iowa; North Dakota; Nebraska; Tennessee; Wisconsin; Denver, Colorado; Charlotte, North Carolina; and Fort Wayne and South Bend, Indiana.

More information about the program can be found on AAAs website.

Jury finds Commerce Twp man guilty of killing wife in 2021 first-degree murder

27 November 2024 at 13:04

A Oakland County jury has found a Commerce Township man guilty of killing his wife back in 2021.

In May of that year, Vincent Vuichard was charged with first-degree murder for killing his wife, Tanya.

Authorities say the killing happened two days prior to Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald issuing charges. When Tanya didn't show up for work on May 17, 2021, police performed a welfare check. She was found underneath a comforter on the bathroom floor with multiple stab wounds.

Vincent's attorney went with an insanity defense over the six-day trial, but 12 jurors did not side with them, deliberating for less than one day. He will remain at the Oakland County Jail until his sentencing set for next year.

Vincent faces life behind bars, with First Degree-murder carrying a mandatory sentence of life imprisonment.

"Tanya Vuichard was a mother, grandmother, friend and coworker her senseless murder is a huge loss to the community," McDonald said. "My office spent the last three years working alongside her children to get justice for Tanya, and I applaud the trial team for securing a first-degree murder conviction in this very difficult case."

Man accused of threatening clerk, pouring gas on products in Pontiac ethnic intimidation case

25 November 2024 at 14:23

A Waterford man has been charged with making a terrorism threat and ethnic intimidation after allegedly asking a gas station clerk if they were Christian or Muslim and pouring gasoline on items in Pontiac.

According to the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office, the charges stem from an incident that happened on Friday, Nov. 22. Officials say that video from the gas station shows Noah Syl Johnson, 28, entering the gas station with a lit cigarette and a gas can. Investigators say he started pouring gas on items in the store after asking the clerk Hey man where your Quran at? Whose side you on? Christian, or Muslim?

Police reportedly saw the man walking in the area with a gas can. When they got to him at the gas station, he allegedly pulled out a knife and refused to put it away as he was taken into custody.

The defendant was charged with:

Making a Threat of Terrorism, Arson Preparation to Burn Property Ethnic Intimidation Resisting and Obstructing a Police Officer.

Johnson was arraigned on Sunday, with a cash bond set at $50,000. If convicted of all charges, he faces 29 years in prison.

This was an extremely dangerous situation for everyone in that store, and threats based on religion or race have a much wider impact on entire communities," Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald said in a statement. "I want the victims to know that we will never shy away from bringing the most serious charges available. And I applaud the bravery and skill of the deputies who arrested this individual and saved his life at great risk to themselves."

Michigan GOP Chairman Pete Hoekstra nominated by Trump to be ambassador to Canada

21 November 2024 at 04:07

President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Michigan Republican Party Chairman Pete Hoekstra to be the U.S. ambassador to Canada, Trump announced on Wednesday.

Hoekstra was officially recognized as chairman by the national Republican Party in February during a clash over leadership with the state party about the removal of Kristina Karamo as the party's chair. Karamo was voted out during a meeting on Jan. 6 and did not accept the results.

Trump had endorsed Hoekstra over Karamo. Both were loyal supporters of Trump.

Hoekstra was present at many campaign events Trump held during his recent campaign.

Hoekstra served as ambassador to the Netherlands during Trumps first term. Prior to that, he was a U.S. House representative from 1993 to 2011.

Trump released a statement about Hoekstra's nomination:

I am very pleased to announce that former Ambassador, and former Congressman, Pete Hoekstra, has been nominated as my United States Ambassador to Canada. Pete is well-respected in the Great State of Michigan - A State we won sizably. He represented Michigans 2nd District in Congress for nearly 20 years, where he was also Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, and was a great help to our Campaign as Chairman of the Michigan Republican Party. I overhauled the disastrous NAFTA Agreement, the worst Trade Deal in the History of the United States, which was switched to the USMCA (Mexico/Canada), which no one thought could be done. We brought Trade with Mexico and Canada to a level playing field for our wonderful Farmers and Working Families. In my Second Term, Pete will help me once again put AMERICA FIRST. He did an outstanding job as United States Ambassador to the Netherlands during our first four years, and I am confident that he will continue to represent our Country well in this new role. Thank you, Pete!
