Madison Heights disconnecting Flock cameras, not renewing contract

11 October 2026 at 20:42

The city of Madison Heights on Sunday announced that it is disconnecting its Automated License Plate Reader cameras and will not be renewing its contract with Flock Safety.

The city says it made the decision after "an extended review of the program and the Citys responsibility to ensure that any technology in use meets established standards for accountability, privacy, and operational integrity."

Three ALPR cameras were used in the city, officials said. They say they waited for Flock staff to assure the city that the "appropriate guardrails were in place," but they failed to address the concerns.

"Without clear and reliable safeguards, the City cannot continue the operation of the ALPR system at this time," the city said in a statement.

City officials say no new data has been collected since the city-run cameras were bagged and not actively used since Sept. 23.

"City staff extends its appreciation to City Council for their continued engagement in this discussion and for providing thoughtful input throughout the evaluation process, as well as the many residents and local businesses who shared feedback," the city said.

The city says there are several businesses and organizations in Madison Heights that have their own cameras and independent contracts with Flock.

Romulus schools postpone homecoming events after credible threats

Tanise Jones, whose son is a senior and daughter is a junior cheerleader at Romulus High School, said canceling the events was the right move.

Its disappointing, especially for the seniors that are graduating in 2027, but I totally agree with the school, Jones said. Do the right thing. Protect the children.

Jones said the situation is especially difficult for her daughter.

My daughter, a cheerleader, was involved in an actual shooting incident during a game, so this is very traumatic for her, Jones said.

Edmondson said he learned of the threat around 1:30 p.m. Friday after receiving a call from the high school principal.

Despite months of planning for the game and homecoming dance, district leaders decided postponing both events was the safest option.

The homecoming dance has been rescheduled for next Saturday. Edmondson said when the football game is eventually played, attendance will be limited to players and their parents.

Romulus School Board President Porsche Laster also said she believes the district made the right call.

Were making sure safety and security is the first priority, Laster said.

Everyone is home and safe with their families.

While she supports the districts response, Jones hopes school officials continue working on plans to improve security at future events.

I need to know whats going to be in place to prevent anything else from happening and the safety of the children and the community, she said.

Michigan absentee ballot returns up 30% compared to same time period in 2022

6 October 2026 at 19:14

More than 201,000 Michigan voters have cast their absentee ballot with four weeks left until Election Day, which is up 30% since this time in 2022 , according to the state.

The state says as of Oct. 6 at 7 a.m., 2,047,983 voters have requested a ballot by mail for the 2026 General Election. They also say 1,967,830 are on the permanent absentee ballot list.

Voting by mail is secure, convenient, and the constitutional right of every eligible Michigan voter, Deputy Secretary of State Aghogho Edevbie said in a statement. With just one month left before Election Day, theres still time to register to vote and request a mail ballot. If you have already received a mail ballot, be sure to return it by mail, at a ballot drop box, or to your local clerks office. Voters who prefer to cast their ballots in person can take advantage of at least nine days of early voting or vote at the polls on Election Day. Oakland County father charged after 4-week-old baby found with broken arm and fractures

6 October 2026 at 18:30

An Oakland County man has been charged with child abuse after first responders found his newborn son with a broken arm, multiple fractures and bruising.

The Oakland County prosecutor charged 20-year-old Cody Patterson of Hazel with three counts of second-degree child abuse involving his 4-week-old son.

Prosecutor Karen McDonald said emergency medical personnel responded for concerns of an infant with a broken arm. They also saw bruising on his forehead and signs of pain when they moved his arm.

The baby was hospitalized and medical imaging showed more than 30 rib fractures, fractures to his left lower leg and a fracture to his right upper arm. Hospital staff also saw bruising on his face, forehead and collarbone.

Investigators say Patterson told them he was frustrated with the child's crying and admitted to squeezing the baby's arms. He also allegedly told them he manipulated and squeezed the baby's legs and heard a popping sound.

These allegations are shocking and heartbreaking, McDonald said in a statement. A four-week-old infant cannot speak or defend himself. He must rely on the adults in his life to care for his well-being. This defendant, instead of protecting his child, allegedly abused him with appalling physical violence.

Authorities are continuing to investigate and review medical records and other evidence.

A former assistant principal at a Detroit school has been sentenced in a sexual assault case involving a minor at his home.

Jerome Younger, 55, was sentenced on Sept. 30 to one count of first-degree criminal sexual conduct involving a relationship with a minor. A judge sentenced him to 42 to 250 months in prison with 55 days served. Younger was also ordered to not contact the victim or anyone under 17 years old.

Younger, a Roseville resident, was charged in October after investigators say a former student of his was assaulted at his home. He pleaded no contest in August of this year.

Prosecutors previously said Younger had been mentoring the child for seven years. Younger was the assistant principal at Edward "Duke" Ellington Conservatory of Music and Art at Beckham Academy, an academy for students in pre-K through eighth grade.

Younger is required to be registered as a Tier 3 lifetime sex offender with electronic monitoring and Wyatt's law and have HIV testing.

I commend the victim for having the bravery to come forward. Such action takes great courage. My office will continue to fight for victims and pursue justice on their behalf, Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido said in a statement.
