Several 6-foot, 100-pound+ lake sturgeon caught in Lake St. Clair during survey

21 August 2026 at 10:42

Researchers are out on Lake St. Clair conducting sturgeon surveys as the summer nears an end, and during this survey, several six-foot or longer sturgeons have been captured.

Andrew Briggs, a fisheries research biologist who works primarily in the St. Clair and Detroit River ecosystems, has been posting updates from the survey over the past few days.

"We conduct a couple sturgeon surveys throughout the year and they are done to help monitor the population size and demographics of the population," Briggs said. "We measure and tag the fish prior to releasing them, with the tagging efforts allowing us to estimate population size and the trajectory of the population."

On Thursday, Briggs posted that they had another "BIG FISH ALERT," saying the crew captured the new largest fish by weight of the survey. The 73-inch fish equal to six-feet-one-inch came in weighing 120 pounds

So far, the crew has caught 18 lake sturgeon, and have caught about 100 sturgeon for the year, Briggs said.

On Tuesday, Briggs posted that they caught three lake sturgeon weighing more than 100 pounds each.

"This is the most 100+ pound Lake Sturgeon we have ever caught in a single day during our stations survey efforts," Briggs wrote. "The fish went 102 (69 long, 33 girth), 103 (72 long, 31 girth), and 110 (75 long, 31 girth) pounds."

Briggs tells 7 News Detroit that during this survey, they are also tagging fish with acoustic telemetry tags, which allows the crews to monitor the movements of the fish.

The survey will finish up Friday, Briggs said, and then they will resume surveying for sturgeon for a few days in October.

$20 million in funding helps Michigan DNR protect 73K acres of Michigamme Highlands in the UP

20 August 2026 at 12:53

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources said that more than 73,000 acres of the Michigamme Highlands in the Upper Peninsula is now protected thanks to grant funding.

According to the DNR, they acquired a conservation easement on the land, which is located at Baraga, Iron and Marquette counties.

It includes the protection of the peak of Mt. Arvon, which is Michigan's highest elevation. Other highlights of the Highlands include:

37 miles of winding rivers 220 miles of perennial streams 96 lakes and ponds Over 13,600 acres of wetlands 4,800 acres of deer wintering complex 2 miles of the Yellow Dog River Habitat for moose, fisher, black bear, coaster brook trout, rainbow trout and Coho salmon

The DNR said the easement also provides public nonmotorized recreational access through the entire property, and motorized access on 77 miles of roads and trails for snowmobiling, and 70 miles for off-road use.

This is an outstanding example of landscape-level conservation with the added benefit of securing public recreational access at the same time, said Jeff Stampfly, Michigans state forester. When we can protect critical deer wintering complexes, wildlife and fisheries habitat and provide public recreation all while securing sustainable forest management that will help to support the forest products industry and local economies, its a big win for Michigan.

The land was purchased using more than $15 million in grant funding from the federal Forest Legacy Program, over $4.2 million in grants from the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund and a $1 million grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation.

13 August 2026 at 15:00

The latest saga involving the future of the LIV Golf Team Championship in Michigan came about Thursday morning, with the league no longer selling tickets for the event on its website.

On Wednesday, The Telegraph reported that LIV had told its players the $30 million Team Championship, scheduled for Aug. 27-30 at The Cardinal at St. John's in Plymouth, was canceled.

However, despite the report, and previous reports saying the event was being canceled, tickets were still available on the LIV Golf website. On Thursday morning, the tickets were no longer available for purchase.

When navigating the LIV Golf site to purchase tickets, a message came up saying, "The tickets you were looking for are no longer available..."

Also Thursday, a new report came out from Today's Golfer, which originally had an interview with Martin Kaymer who said the team championship was highly unlikely to happen. In the Today's Golfer report Thursday, Ben Parsons wrote that three LIV golfers have entered into the British Masters, which is a DP World Tour event being held the same weekend as the scheduled Team Championship in Michigan.

Following the LIV Golf Bedminster event in New York this past Sunday, TNT Sports' Craig Doyle said the event in Indianapolis would be the final event of the season, where the team championship will be decided. The video was posted byΒ Flushing It Golf on X.

There is no infrastructure on site, just two weeks before the tournament was scheduled to begin, and LIV hasn't officially announced the cancellation or postponement.

The silence has people talking.

Mark Newman, a volunteer and Plymouth Township resident who participated last year and registered again this year, said he has no information about whether the event will move forward.

Two Detroit restaurant veterans are teaming up to open a new pizza spot in Downtown Detroit.

Larry Kahn, Ann-Marie Muprhy and Jeff Alexander, the ownership team behind Dime Store, and Tony Sacco of Mootz Pizzeria + Bar, are opening Unc's Pizza in Detroit's Capitol Park. It officially opens Tuesday, Aug. 11 at 4 p.m.

"We wanted to create the neighborhood pizza place we all wish still existed," Kahn said in a statement. "The kind of place where everyone feels welcome, families stay awhile and another chair is pulled up to the table."

The pizza restaurant is being led by executive chefs Andrew Shedden and Josh Taylor, who had stints at Olin, Marrow in the Market, Dime Store and Supergeil, as well as Chicago restaurants Caf Ba-Ba-Reeba! and Moto.

Hospitality isn't just a service; it's a way of looking out for one another, Murphy added in the statement. This place is dedicated to the people who taught us to be generous with our time, care for our communities and make everyone feel like they belong.

The menu includes Detroit-style red and white pizza, salads, shareables and sandwiches.

Windsor-Detroit Tunnel offers free toll after Si Woo Kim accidentally crosses into Canada

By: Max White
1 August 2026 at 20:51

One of the golfers playing at this week's Rocket Classic accidentally ended up in Canada a mistake many metro Detroiters have made in the past.

On Tuesday night, Michael Kim shared a story on X that he always goes to a "solid Korean bbq restaurant" when he's in Detroit. He invited fellow golfer Si Woo Kim.

As Michael tells the story, Si Woo searched the restaurant on Google Maps and began driving there, without thinking.

"But before its too late, he realizes that hes about to go across the US border into Canada! There was a restaurant under the SAME NAME closer to him in Canada," Michael Kim said in the post.

CBS Golf caught up with Si Woo on Wednesday about the incident. Si Woo said the restaurant in Windsor was only about 1.5 miles from his hotel in Downtown Detroit, so he thought that was the right one.

"I just follow the instruction, and somehow make a turn, there's like toll gate, like $9, I had to pay to go through. Why's it so expensive?" Si Woo said. "Then as soon as I get into the tunnel, 'Oh, this is Canada."

Si Woo, who is from South Korea, said that he was freaking out and because of that, he wasn't speaking English very much.

He also said the immigration officer asked if he was going to win this Sunday, and Si Woo said, "if you let me through."

Then, on Friday, the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel got in on the fun and offered a free toll for Si Woo Kim. "Just remember to bring your passport this time," they said.
