Pine Hall – rooftop cocktail bar at Hudson's Detroit building – officially opens on June 11

By: Max White
10 June 2026 at 14:01

Pine Hall, the rooftop bar and restaurant coming to the 12th floor of the Hudson's Detroit building, will officially open to the public on Thursday.

The restaurant and bar is from from Union Square Hospitality Group (USHG), which is founded by award-winning New York City restaurateur Danny Meyer.

Pine Hall pays honor to The Pine Room, which was the iconic wood-paneled restaurant that was once housed inside the historic J.L. Hudson Department store.

The massive space has a wrap-around outdoor terrace that's 3,300 square feet, offering sweeping views of Downtown Detroit to the west, including Comerica Park to the North and Belle Isle and the Detroit River to the east.

See inside and outside Pine Hall in the video below Pine Hall video for web

Pine Hall is the kind of place we hope people return to again and again, Meyer said in a statement. Its meant to feel familiar from the moment you walk in a welcoming spot for drinks and dinner that belongs to Detroit and reflects the pride of the city.

Inside, the restaurant pays homage to The Pine Room with wood-paneled walls and a huge bar, stocked with spirits from several Michigan distilleries.

The drink program is overseen by GM Kris Peterson and features a variety of fun and easy-drinking cocktails, including the Detroit Vice, which features Weiss Arcane Aquavit, lime, pineapple, coconut, lingonberry and dill, plus a daiquiri sidecar. There's also the Cherry Picked, featuring Michigan-based Journeyman Rye Whiskey, cherry and lemon with a Better Made potato chip rim.

There is also an extensive wine list, plus beer from the Midwest and non-alcoholic drinks.

For years, Hudsons was a gathering place for Detroiters and visitors, a destination to enjoy a meal, and spend time with friends and family to make lasting memories, says Andrew Leber, senior vice president of hospitality at Bedrock, said in a statement. Pine Hall preserves that legacy, where great food and a historic downtown location come together to create an unforgettable experience for a new generation.

For food, there will be a mix of elevated bar snacks, like deviled eggs and crab fritters, plus a sausage roll featuring a buttery, flaky pastry and spicy dijon mustard.

The Pine Hall Burger features a dry-aged patty with aged New York cheddar and onions along with fries, and of course it features a Hudson's-inspired Maurice Salad with roast turkey, smoked ham and gruyere.

Detroit has an incredible hospitality community and a strong sense of place, USHG CEO Chip Wade said in a statement. As we open our first space in the city, our focus is on creating something additive a place shaped by the people, culture, and energy already here.

Pine Hall officially opens Thursday, June 11 at 4 p.m. You can enter the bar inside Nick Gilbert Way, and reservations are available now on OpenTable or by calling 313-545-8770. Walk-ins are also welcome.

It will be open from Monday-Thursday from 4 p.m. to midnight, Friday and Saturday from 4 p.m. to 1 a.m. and Sunday from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.

After Nelly Korda's win, all eyes turn to Toledo's Inverness Club for 2027 U.S. Women's Open

8 June 2026 at 13:02

The 2026 U.S. Women's Open presented by Ally wrapped up with an incredible finish on Sunday from Riviera Country Club, with Nelly Korda winning her first championship.

The leaderboard was stacked, with some of the best golfers in the game near the top, including Charley Hull, Sei Young Kim, Nasa Hataoa and more competing for the win.

Now, all eyes turn to the 2027 U.S. Women's Open, which is set for Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio. The tournament is likely to draw golf fans across metro Detroit. Inverness Club is only about an hour from Detroit, and even closer from the southern parts of the area.

The club last hosted a major event with the 2021 Solheim Cup, where Team Europe beat Team USA. The event drew more than 130,000 spectators to Toledo to watch the best golfers in the world.

With a historic Donald Ross course, Inverness Club has hosted six major championships, as well as several NCAA Championships and other USGA championships. In 2017-2018, the course underwent a major restoration project by Andrew Green. Just last year, the Toledo Blade reported that Green was back at Inverness for a second restoration, where he touched all 18 holes of the course, adding bunkers, expanding greens and even more.

Presale tickets are open for some fans who are registered for the 2027 U.S. Women's Open presented by Ally. Fans can learn more about registering for tickets here, and more information about volunteer opportunities is available here.

Detroit-based Ally joined forces with the USGA in 2024 for a multi-year deal to be the presenting sponsor of the U.S. Women's Open, increasing the purse for the tournament. The company has a 50/50 pledge where it spends equal amounts of advertising on men's and women's sports.

Wright & Company closing in July after 12 years in Downtown Detroit

By: Max White
2 June 2026 at 12:16

After more than a decade in Downtown Detroit, the restaurant Wright & Company announced it is closing this summer.

The spot was opened by Chef Marc Djozlija, who is also a partner in the restaurant, on the second floor at 1500 Woodward in the F.J. Schwankovsky Building, which was completed in 1891. From 1920 to 1978, it was occupied by the Wright-Kay jewelry firm.

Djozlija was nominated for a James Beard Award in 2015. The menu features a variety of small plates, plus cocktails and desserts.

In a post on Instagram on Monday, restaurant owners said that its final dinner service will be on Friday, July 3.

"For more than a decade, youve made us part of your first dates, anniversaries, celebrations, late-night cocktails, and countless unforgettable evenings. What started as a restaurant became a gathering place, and thats because of the people who walked through our doors," the post reads.

They said they will still continue hosting private events, celebrations and special gatherings in the second-floor space. According to Melody Baetens, the dining and entertainment reporter for The Detroit News, a new concept will take over the space.

Iconic 'Project Hail Mary' sweater is from this family-owned Michigan company

By: Max White
17 April 2026 at 13:22

Project Hail Mary is back on IMAX screens this weekend, about a month after its highly anticipated release. The film has grossed hundreds of millions of dollars across the globe, and left moviegoers enamored with the cinematography, the character Rocky, and Ryan Goslings fox sweater.

That sweater, worn by Goslings character, Dr. Ryland Grace, is actually from a fourth-generation family-owned company headquartered in Port Huron.

See more in the video below

Iconic 'Project Hail Mary' sweater is from this family-owned Michigan company

That company, Mary Maxim, offers a wide selection of yarns, plus a library of kits and patterns. However, Mitch McPhedrain, the fourth-generation president of Mary Maxim, said the company was founded and grew with the popularity of sweaters like the one worn in the film.

He said that the films costume designer, Glyn Dillon, reached out after seeing the original wolf sweater at a vintage fair in London.

I think he was somewhat familiar with the sweaters, but he brought it on site and then, everyone on set just loved it, including Ryan Gosling, McPhedrain told me.

According to an article in Indiewire, Gosling was the person who suggested a version of the sweater with fox faces and fox footprints instead of the wolf ones.

They basically just changed a couple of things, like the eyes and the mouth. They didn't really modify a whole lot, to be honest, but there were some slight changes, and then they also changed the color to make it look more like a fox, McPhedrain said.

McPhedrain said the team asked for permission to use the sweater and make the changes.

He told us that when the movie came out, he, his mom, and some of the staff from the Port Huron office went to the theatre to see the movie. McPhedrain and his mom wore the sweater.

I didnt realize how much it was actually going to be in the movie, he said. Just seeing it the first time was just amazing, and from there, just the amount that they wore it, I was like, wow, this is, this is awesome.

He said the entire Mary Maxim staff is a great team and was incredibly proud to see the sweater in the film.

I'm just thrilled with how much attention it's getting, he told me. I just really like the sweaters in particular, and Im just happy that theyre getting all the attention, and my goal is to keep bringing them back and maybe resurface some older designs that we have and come out with some new designs.

After the film came out, comments about the sweater and Goslings outfits were all over social media. Its likely going to be a popular Halloween costume this year, and McPhedrain said before the film, they had sold the original wolf pattern as a downloadable pattern only.

Now, Mary Maxim is selling the Wolf Cardigan kit Project Hail Mary version on its website. You can get it in a variety of colors. But like that long space journey to the Petrova line, getting to wear the iconic sweater will take some work. Because plot twist: the kit from Mary Maxim requires you to knit it yourself.

Of course, it's not stopping the demand. The kit is temporarily sold out, but you can make a preorder

Right now, Mary Maxim is working with their main supplier and other vendors from whom they get yarn to meet demand.

Were assembling as many as we can, and shipping them out, he said, but it could take a few weeks to a month to get them out to people who pre-ordered them.

McPhedrain said he is grateful for the crochet/knit community and the industry, and that these designs are resurfacing again. His hope is that the film brings attention back to knitting and crocheting and drives people to want to learn to knit again.

My goal is to keep bringing out new designs like this that people can make, he said.

9 April 2026 at 14:54

Detroit is a frontrunner to get a new Professional Women's Hockey League team when the league announces its next expansion, according to multiple reports.

The city just hosted its fourth PWHL Takeover Tour game in three seasons, and set a new Little Caesars Arena record for the PWHL with 15,938 fans attending the game between the Montreal Victoire and New York Sirens.

Also, last week, University of Michigan Regent Denise Ilitch said on her podcast, "I believe we'll be getting a team in Detroit soon, which really excites me."

According to The Athletic, PWHL Advisory Board Member Stan Kasten said that the league was going to have news about expansion "in the next few weeks."

The Athletic said that Detroit is the leader in the clubhouse for a new team after the four games in the city. The latest game was also the first nationally televised game on ION, which is owned by WXYZ's parent company, E.W. Scripps, and sponsored by Ally Financial, which is based in Detroit.

"At this point, it would be shocking if Detroit werent one of the leagues newest teams by next season," The Athletic wrote.

During the latest Takeover Tour game, there was a segment where signs were showcased from fans, all of which expressed the passion of fans wanting to bring a team to Hockeytown.

The league, which now consists of eight teams, expanded last season to the West Coast by adding teams in Seattle and Vancouver. The teams are in Boston, Minnesota, Montreal, New York, Ottawa, Toronto, Seattle and Vancouver.

Ex-Detroit police sergeant led 'double life' as serial rapist, prosecutor says

By: Max White
19 March 2026 at 14:40

A former Detroit police sergeant who spent nearly 30 years on the force allegedly led a double life as an officer and a serial rapist, according to Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy.

Benjamin Wagner, 68, is now facing charges in five separate sexual assaults of girls and women between the ages of 15 and 23 from 1999 and 2003 in Northwest Detroit.

The details were laid out at a press conference on Thursday by Worthy, Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison, as well as other prosecutors and police officers.

"The deplorable fact in this case is that the person we are charging has led a double life as a law enforcement officer and serial rapist," Worthy said.

See the entire press conference from the prosecutor's office in the video below

Prosecutors announce charges against ex-DPD sergeant who was allegedly a serial rapist

According to Worthy, Wagner "utilized isolation and force, armed with a handgun," and threatened the girls' lives as he sexually assaulted them.

These cases stem from the nearly 11,000 sex assault kits from 1984-2009 that were found in a warehouse in 2009.

According to the prosecutor's office, Wagner was employed by the Detroit Police Department from 1989 until he retired in 2017. He then moved to Greenville, N.C. and that's where he was arrested. Police said he was taken into custody on Tuesday, March 17, and is expected to be back in Detroit next week to face charges.

Wagner reportedly worked in both the 10th and 2nd precincts, as well as investigative operations, tactical services, commercial auto theft unit and more, where he received several awards and commendations.

In all, Wagner is facing 14 separate charges in the five cases. Five counts of kidnapping, eight counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct and one count of third-degree criminal sexual conduct.

Worthy is asking anyone who believes they may have been a victim of Wagner to report it to the Detroit Police Sex Crimes Unit by calling 313-596-1950

The breakdown of the charges and cases are below.

Case 1 - Nov. 10, 1999

Prosecutors say a 17-year-old took a bus to a bus stop near the home of a friend in the area of Chalfont and Mark Twain on the city's northwest side.

According to Worthy, Wagner reportedly approached her, pointed a gun at her, ordered her from the scene and sexually assaulted her.

He's charged with one count of kidnapping and three counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct in this case.

Case 2 - Jan. 31, 2000

Prosecutors say a 23-year-old woman left her home to walk to a store in the 184000 block of Wyoming. When she was walking, Wagner repotedly walked toward her, pointed a gun at her, ordered her from the scene and sexually assaulted her.

In this case, he's charged with one count of kidnapping and one count of first-degree criminal sexual conduct.

Case 3 - Sept. 28, 2000

According to prosecutors, a 15-year-old girl was on her way to school and walking to the bus in the 19800 block of Florence when Wagner grabbed her arm, put a gun in her face and moved her from the scene, assaulting her.

In that case, he's facing charges of kidnapping, first-degree criminal sexual conduct and third-degree criminal sexual conduct.

Case 4 - Nov. 19, 2000

In this case, prosecutors say a 20-year-old woman was walking to a friend's house in the 8500 block of W. McNichols when Wagner walked past her, attacked her from behind and put a gun to her back. He then moved her to another area and sexually assaulted her.

He's charged with one count of kidnapping and one count of first-degree criminal sexual conduct.

Case 5 - April 15, 2003

Prosecutors say a 16-year-old girl was walking to catch a bus to school in the 19000 block of Ferguson when Wagner approached her, had a handgun and removed her from the scene, raping her.

He's charged with one count of kidnapping and one count of first-degree criminal sexual conduct.

According to the prosecutor's office, despite having a firearm in all the alleged sexual assaults, there are no felony firearm charges because of Michigan's statute of limitations.

DNR provides tips & info as black bears begin emerging from dens across Michigan

By: Max White
13 March 2026 at 11:23

As spring approaches in Michigan, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources is reminding residents of several important things as bears emerge from their dens.

According to the DNR, there are an estimated 12,450 black bears across the state, and they'll be emerging from their dens over the next few weeks -Β many with cubs tagging along.

The DNR said that bears have an extraordinary sense of smell and memory, and can smell food from a mile away and remember that location for years. That includes backyard bird feeders or even a grease-spattered grill.

"When bears get used to human-associated food sources, they are more apt to roam neighborhoods not flee when harassed by people and even break into homes and outbuildings for food," the DNR wrote.

The DNR did say that you don't have to request the animal be relocated if a bear is raiding your birdfeeder; however, you can remove the feeder for at least two weeks and the bears should stop coming around.

"Michigan is bear country, said Jared Duquette, human-wildlife interactions specialist for the DNR. And as bears come out of their winter dens, its important to remember that we can live responsibly with these magnificent animals and avoid conflicts by following some basic best practices. Take down bird feeders, especially in the spring and summer, clean grills after use, dont leave pet food outside and wait until collection day to put your trash out.

In high-density bear areas, you should consider using a bear-resistant trash bin.

The DNR said there are an estimated 10,350 black bears throughout the Upper Peninsula, and around 2,100 bears in the Lower Peninsula. The Lower Peninsula's population is concentrated mainly in the northern part, however, bears have been pushing south into urban areas of mid-Michigan.

According to the DNr, some black bears leave their dens in March to walk around and stretch before going back to sleep. However, others leave their dens for good.

"Eventually, bears will go searching for more substantial meals, so now is a good time to make sure anything around your home and property that could possibly attract a hungry bear is stored out of sight, smell and reach," the DNR said.

If you see a bear and it notices you, stand still, don't approach, and then move away quietly in the opposite direction. Do not run, as it may trigger a chase response.

According to the DNR, bears typically give birth to two or three cubs in January or February, and the dubs typically stay with their mother for 16-18 months. As the cubs get older, mother bears leave the cubs to forage for food, as fa as two miles away.

Rustic, outdoor Islandview Sauna Club opens on Detroit's east side

By: Max White
16 February 2026 at 16:11

A new spot to sauna and cold plunge has officially opened on Detroit's east side. Islandview Sauna Club is a rustic sauna destination in the woods just off of E. Lafayette.

The rustic sauna camp includes three wood-burning saunas, outdoor cold plunges and a fire pit for people to hang around.

The saunas themselves are unique. There's a wood barrel sauna, a converted cattle trailer and a converted horse trailer, all of which seat anywhere from four to more than a dozen people inside.

When I visited on Sunday, the temperatures inside the saunas ranged from 160 to more than 200 in the converted horse trailer. There are also two large cold plunges for people to hop in after their sauna. They were at 38 on Sunday.

The wood-fired saunas were built in Minneapolis following research by the owners. Islandview Sauna Club is co-owned by Jacque and Christine Driscoll, who also operate Yellow Light Coffee and Donuts, Green Dot Stables and others. It's also co-owned by Tamas and Gail von Staden, who own von Staden Architecture in Royal Oak.

We wanted to make sure that when guests cross into the sauna grounds, they feel like they are in a Northern Michigan camp with wood smoke in the air, a fire crackling at the entrance, and heat rising from our handcrafted saunas, Jacques said in a statement.

Guests can change inside a canvas tent, where you also check in for your sauna session. You feel as if you're transported to Northern Michigan while being just two miles from Downtown Detroit.

The one-hour sessions cost $25, and appointments are necessary. You can book your session at islandviewsauna.com. When you book your session, you're encouraged to arrive 15 minutes before to get settled, change and hear safety guidelines.

Guests should also bring a robe or towel to wrap in, a bathing suit, a towel to sit on and flip flops or slides. After your session, you can hang around the bonfire or in the basecamp tent where you've changed.

Currently, Islandview Sauna Club is open from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. It's located at 1000 Beaufait, just north of Lafayette and across from Brewery Faisan. They are also offering private bookings on the website.
