Gibbs rushes for 219 yards and two scores as Lions come back to beat Giants

23 November 2025 at 22:00

Jahmyr Gibbs ran for a 69-yard touchdown on the first snap of overtime after Jake Bates matched a career high with a 59-yard field goal in the final minute of regulation, lifting the Detroit Lions to a 34-27 win over the New York Giants on Sunday.

New York had a chance to extend the game, but turned it over on downs at the Detroit 31 when Aidan Hutchinson sacked Jameis Winston.

The Lions (7-4) entered the game out of the playoff picture, trailed by double digits multiple times and rallied to avoid losing consecutive games for the first time in more than three years.

They wouldn't have pulled it off without Gibbs, who had a career-high 264 yards from scrimmage and three scores.

The dual-threat running back had a career-high 219 yards rushing the third-highest total in team history and two touchdowns along with 45 yards receiving and another score.

Filling in for injured rookie Jaxson Dart, Winston had a 33-yard touchdown reception and threw a 39-yard touchdown pass on trick plays in regulation.

The Giants (2-10) lost their sixth straight game and fifth this season after leading in the fourth quarter.

In his second game as New York's interim coach, Mike Kafka made a risky decision late that ended up working in Detroit's favor.

With the Giants leading 27-24, Devin Singletary was stopped for a 4-yard loss on third-and-goal from the 2. Instead of kicking a short field goal, Kafka went for it, and Winston's pass to Theo Johnson was incomplete, ending a 14-play, 86-yard drive with no points.

Detroit took advantage. Bates connected on his long field goal with 28 seconds left, giving Jared Goff another opportunity to put the ball in Gibbs' hands.

Goff was 28 of 42 for 279 yards with two touchdowns: an 11-yard touchdown pass to Amon-Ra St. Brown and a 3-yard pass to Gibbs in the first half. He had a deflected pass picked off.

St. Brown had nine catches for 149 yards.

Making his second start for the Giants, Winston was 18 of 36 for 366 yards becoming the first to throw for at least 300 yards against Detroit this season with two touchdowns and an interception.

WanDale Robinson set career highs with nine receptions for 156 yards and had a 12-yard touchdown in the second quarter that gave the Giants one of their three 10-point leads.

The Giants have lost an NFL-high five games after leading in the fourth. Last month at Denver, they became the first team since at least 1970 to lead by 18-plus points with six minutes remaining and lose in regulation.

Injuries

Giants: Dart (concussion) and edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux (shoulder) each missed a second straight game and CB Paulson Adebo (knee) was out for the fifth game in a row. ... LB Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles (neck) left in the second quarter.

Lions: CB Terrion Arnold (concussion) and S Kerby Joseph (knee) were inactive. ... WR/PR Kalif Raymond (ankle) was injured in the third quarter and didnt return.

Gunman who killed Florida deputy dies from injuries after eviction notice shooting

23 November 2025 at 20:26

A gunman who killed a Florida deputy earlier this week died on Saturday from injuries received in the confrontation, authorities say.

Michael Halberstam, 37, shot two Indian River County deputies and a locksmith on Friday when they were serving an eviction notice at a home near Vero Beach where Halberstam's mother was trying to evict him, officials said. Officers returned fire, striking Halberstam multiple times and he succumbed to his injuries Saturday afternoon, the county's sheriff's department said in a post online.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT | Florida deputy killed, others injured in shooting while trying to serve eviction

One of the deputies, Terri Sweeting-Mashkow, was killed and another is recovering from a shoulder injury. The locksmith was in critical condition after the shooting and underwent surgery, Alexander Hagan, a spokesman for HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital, said Friday. The locksmith wasn't identified.

Over the past month, the sheriffs office had received seven calls from the home, almost all of which were from the mother calling about her son, Indian River County Sheriff Eric Flowers said Friday at a news conference. Still, he said, deputies werent expecting any trouble when they arrived to carry out the eviction.

This was a standard call for service, the sheriff said, adding there was nothing in Halberstam's record that would have precluded him from having a weapon.

Sweeting-Mashkow was a 25-year-veteran of the sheriffs office, Flowers said, growing emotional as he praised the deputy and described working alongside him his entire career.

I can tell you that our team will feel this forever, Flowers said.

Sweeting-Mashkow was posthumously promoted to sergeant in the sheriff's office on Saturday.

Rochester's Bizzy Buzz Artisan Market promotes creativity, helps local artists

23 November 2025 at 19:40

In downtown Rochester, one local marketplace is buzzing with creativity, community, and causes.

The building was built in the 1890s. One of the originals, by the way. It's got a specialty store called the Bizzy Buzz Artisanal Market.

Watch Faraz's report in the video player below Creativity and community take center stage at Rochester's Bizzy Buzz Artisan Market

From handmade jewelry to vibrant paintings, every shelf here is bursting with colors and customization options. Pamela Walther calls herself the VIP owner of Bizzy Buzz, which opened in 2018.

"It's all local artists. We've got about 100 artists. It's all their product, so they are constantly bringing in new things every day," Walther said.

Besides having a platform to showcase products, vendors here also highlight their stories.

"Over here we've got from our blooming artists, these are all 18 and under kids, jewelry and roses made from recycled pop cans. And we've got all the 3D printed stuff. We've got all the superhero characters," Walther said.

There are also non-profit brands that give back to the community. Grace Serra-Boldman started Worthy Turtle back in 2023.

"We've given six scholarships. The profits that we make are all rolled back into the mission," Serra-Boldman said.

"One of the beauties of Worthy Turtle is that you have inspiring and uplifting messages, which is right here, I believe in you is one," I mentioned.

"I believe in you. Be the gift. I have, just keep going. It's possible. For the holidays, all I want for Christmas is more love for you, me, and every living thing," she replied.

For Grace, this is deeply personal.

"I have a daughter who has these kinds of disabilities. She has a hand that she kind of holds like this. And in OT, she would always call it my turtle hand. And I have to use my turtle hand. And this is-- and so we thought, that's really been like a metaphor for her. And this idea of worthiness, of course, belongs to all human beings. We're all worthy," Serra-Boldman said.

Just like Worthy Turtle, there are several other brands here on a similar mission, like The Workplace Program, a non-profit organization that employs persons with disabilities.

"So they make all these cards and they're super fun and super cute," Walther said. "Whenever you purchase one of these key chains, you're also helping dogs that have health issues."

I asked Walther what it means to vendors, to have a space like this.

"You know, there's not a lot of places for them to get their stuff out there to the general public," she replied.

"Pam, you own this entire building. You could have easily leased the space to a big store or whatever, but you chose not to. Instead, you opened Busy Buzz. Why?" I followed up with.

"Yeah, you're gonna make me cry," Walther said through tears. "It would be a lot easier to just rent it out, but I don't want to do that. I want this to be a place for the community. I want this to be a place for the artists. We've seen a lot of artist markets close down. We've seen a lot of the big-box stores close. You know, we've seen a lot of small businesses close. So I just hope that people, you know, come out and support their small businesses, because, you know, we need you guys."

If you would like to apply to be a vendor at Bizzy Buzz, you can do that at this link.

‘Wicked: For Good’ is even more popular than the first, soaring to a $226 million global debut

23 November 2025 at 16:16

Universal Pictures two-part Wicked gamble continues to defy gravity at the box office. Just a year after part one brought droves of audiences to movie theaters around the country, even more people bought opening weekend tickets to see the epic conclusion, Wicked: For Good. According to studio estimates on Sunday, Wicked: For Good earned $150 million from North American theaters in its first days in theaters and $226 million globally.

Not only is it the biggest opening ever for a Broadway musical adaptation, unseating the record set by the first films $112 million launch, its also the second biggest debut of the year behind A Minecraft Movies $162 million.

Universal began rolling out Wicked: For Good in theaters earlier this week, with previews on Monday ($6.1 million from 1,050 theaters) and Wednesday ($6.5 million from 2,300 theaters). By Friday it was playing in 4,115 North American locations and had raked in $68.6 million. IMAX showings accounted for $15.5 million, or 11%, of its domestic haul a November record for the company.

IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond said in a statement that the strong market share shows, our momentum carries into demos and genres beyond our traditional core, including families.

As with the first film, women powered opening weekend, making up around 71% of ticket buyers according to PostTrak exit polls. Critics were somewhat mixed on the final chapter, but audiences werent: An overwhelming 83% of audiences said it was one they would definitely recommend to friends.

Jon M. Chu directed both Wicked films, starring Cynthia Ervio and Ariana Grande. The first film made over $758.7 million worldwide and received 10 Oscar nominations (winning two, for costume and production design. The question is how high Wicked: For Good can soar. Combined, the two films cost around $300 million to produce, not including marketing and promotion costs.

Two other films also opened in wide release this weekend, but further down on the charts behind a buffet of holdovers. Searchlight Pictures opened its Brendan Fraser film Rental Family in 1,925 theaters. The Finnish action film Sisu: Road to Revenge," a Sony release, also played in 2,222 theaters.

Although this weekend the box office was more of a winner takes all scenario, Wicked: For Goods success is vitally important for the exhibition industry as a whole as it enters the final weeks of the year. After the slow fall season, the Thanksgiving blockbusters could not arrive soon enough. Early next week, Zootopia 2 enters the mix and is also expected to drive big crowds to the cineplex over the holiday break.

Drew Stevens' field goal caps Iowa's comeback in win over Michigan State

23 November 2025 at 15:02

Drew Stevens kicked a 44-yard field goal as time expired to give Iowa a 20-17 win over Michigan State on Saturday.

The kick capped a 13-point fourth-quarter comeback for the Hawkeyes (7-4, 5-3 Big Ten), who snapped a two-game losing streak.

The win brought some emotions from Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz after the game.

I guess as you get older, the highs get a little higher and the lows get a little lower, said Ferentz, his voice breaking as he spoke. My thought today we might be in one of those lowers.

Stevens, a senior playing his final home game, said after the game he had been thinking about his senior day in high school.

Believe it or not, I had missed one of those before, Stevens said. My senior game in high school, the last time I played at home, I missed a game-tying field goal. I put all the blame on me, that we lost the game because of me. I just immediately went back to that moment, and I'm grateful that I got the chance to do it, make it right.

Stevens had missed a 53-yard field goal at the end of the first half, but Ferentz knew what he had in his kicker at the end of the game.

I think all of us had faith Drew would get it done, Ferentz said.

Iowa trailed 17-7 after Michigan State quarterback Alessio Milivojevic threw two third-quarter touchdown passes to Chrishon McCray. But the Hawkeyes held the Spartans (3-8, 0-8) to just 26 yards on four possessions in the fourth quarter, sending Michigan State to its eighth consecutive loss and extending the Spartans Big Ten losing streak to nine games.

We didnt play great in the first three quarters, Iowa quarterback Mark Gronowski said. But you have to stay in the present moment.

In that fourth quarter, we started looking like an offense, Ferentz said.

The Hawkeyes got to within 17-10 on Stevens 26-yard field goal with 11:27 left in the fourth quarter, then tied the game when Gronowski threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Gill with 1:29 to play. That drive was set up by a 40-yard punt return by Kaden Wetjen, who had returned a punt 62 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter for Iowas first score and becoming the program's all-time leader in returns for touchdowns.

Iowa got the ball back on its own 21-yard line and drove 53 yards in five plays, setting up Stevens for his game winner.

With his leg, we knew we only had to get to the 40-yard line, Gronowski said. But we did better than that.

Michigan State coach Jonathan Smith described the loss as painful.

It's tough, he said. There's no other way to say it.

The Spartans seemed in control of the game after the third quarter. Milivojevic threw a 45-yard touchdown pass down the left sideline to McCray with 8:58 left in the quarter to give Michigan State a 10-7 lead, then threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to McCray near the end of the quarter to boost the lead to 17-7.

The Spartans had a 335-301 edge in offensive yards. Milivojevic threw for 255 yards.

The takeaway

Michigan State: The Spartans looked ready to break their long losing skid then lost control in the fourth quarter when Iowas defense finally responded. Punting to Wetjen, one of the best returners in the nation, proved to be unwise, especially late in the game. Special teams hurt us, Smith said.

Iowa: The Hawkeyes were lifeless on offense until the fourth quarter. Gronowski didnt complete a pass until the second quarter and finished with 147 yards passing. Iowas defense also responded by shutting down the Spartans in the fourth quarter. We fought back and we were able to finish it, Gronowski said.

50 schoolchildren escape captivity in Nigeria, 253 students and 12 teachers still being held

23 November 2025 at 14:57

Fifty of the 303 schoolchildren abducted from a Catholic school in north-central Nigerias Niger state have escaped captivity and are now with their families, the school authority said Sunday, bringing relief to some distraught families after one of the largest school abductions in Nigeria's history.

The schoolchildren, aged between 10 and 18, escaped individually between Friday and Saturday, according to the Most Rev. Bulus Dauwa Yohanna, chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria in Niger state and the proprietor of the school. A total of 253 schoolchildren and 12 teachers are still held by the kidnappers, he said in a statement.

We were able to ascertain this when we decided to contact and visit some parents, Yohanna said.

The pupils and students were seized together with their teachers by gunmen who attacked the St. Marys School, a Catholic institution in Niger states remote Papiri community, on Friday. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the abductions and authorities have said tactical squads have been deployed alongside local hunters to rescue the children.

It was not immediately clear where the Niger state children were being held or how they managed to return home. Nigerias military and police did not immediately respond to an Associated Press inquiry.

As much as we receive the return of these 50 children that escaped with some sigh of relief, I urge you all to continue in your prayers for the rescue and safe return of the remaining victims, the Yohanna said.

The Niger state attack happened four days after 25 schoolchildren were seized in similar circumstances in neighboring Kebbi states Maga town, which is 106 miles away.

Both states are in a northern region of Nigeria where dozens of armed gangs have used kidnapping for ransom as one way of dominating remote communities with little government and security presence.

Satellite image shows that the Niger state school compound is attached to an adjoining primary school, with more than 50 classroom and dormitory buildings. Its located near a major road linking the towns of Yelwa and Mokwa.

School kidnappings have come to define insecurity in Africas most populous nation, and armed gangs often see schools as strategic targets to draw more attention.

Niger state hurriedly closed down all schools after Fridays attack, while some federal colleges in conflict hotspots across the region were also closed by the Nigerian government.

Substitute RB Kuzdzal runs for 100 yards and 3 TDs to lift No. 18 Michigan over Maryland

23 November 2025 at 14:54

Bryson Kuzdzal ran for 100 yards and three touchdowns to help No. 18 Michigan to a 45-20 victory over Maryland on Saturday, a week before the Wolverines host top-ranked Ohio State.

Michigan (9-2, 7-1 Big Ten, No. 18 CFP) was without injured running backs Justice Haynes and Jordan Marshall, but the Wolverines were still superior on the ground, and Michigan finished with its highest scoring output in conference play this season.

Proud of this team, Wolverines coach Sherrone Moore said. How they prepared and how they never looked forward the whole week. It's so easy to be able to do that with that game on the horizon.

Bryce Underwood defeated Malik Washington in a matchup of two impressive freshman quarterbacks. Maryland (4-7, 1-7) scored on the game's first drive but could not avoid a seventh straight loss. Underwood threw for 215 yards and two touchdowns for Michigan, while Washington passed for 210 yards and a touchdown with an interception.

With the score tied at 7 in the first quarter, Underwood's pass probably should have been intercepted by Lavain Scruggs, but the defensive back couldn't hold onto the ball. The Wolverines eventually took the lead on a 2-yard TD run by Kuzdzal. After an interception by Michigan's Mason Curtis gave the offense a short field, Underwood's 22-yard scoring pass to Donaven McCulley made it 21-7.

Kuzdzal added touchdown runs of 19 and 1 yards in the third quarter, and Jasper Parker scored on a 6-yarder in the fourth that made it 42-13.

We held their run pretty good until later in the third and into the fourth quarter, Maryland defensive back Jalen Huskey said. That's something we can build on.

Michigan will try for its fifth straight win over Ohio State next week. Underwood heads into that game on a high note, but the injuries in the backfield could be a significant concern. In addition to Haynes and Marshall, the Wolverines also have to worry about fullback Max Bredeson, who was on crutches on the sideline during the second half Saturday.

After Washington opened the scoring with a 1-yard touchdown pass to Dorian Fleming, Maryland tried a surprise onside kick, but Michigan recovered and quickly tied it on Underwood's 12-yard scoring toss to Andrew Marsh.

The takeaway

Michigan: The Wolverines avoided the mistakes that plagued them a week earlier, when they had five turnovers in a tight win over Northwestern. It hasn't always been pretty, but Michigan can now make a compelling playoff case if it can knock off the Buckeyes.

Maryland: The Terrapins will finish with a losing record for a second consecutive year. The future might be brighter thanks to Washington, but Maryland needs to improve its running game and its ability to defend the run.

Keeping drives going

Michigan converted its first seven third downs and finished 12 of 14. The Wolverines did not have a single punt their only scoreless drives were a missed field goal and the end of both halves.

Cunningham helps Pistons breeze past Bucks for 12th consecutive victory

23 November 2025 at 14:43

Cade Cunningham had 29 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds as the Detroit Pistons capitalized on sizzling shooting to beat the Milwaukee Bucks 129-116 on Saturday night for their 12th straight victory.

Detroit's Jaden Ivey played 15 minutes and scored 10 points in his first game since breaking his left fibula on Jan. 1. Tobias Harris scored 18 points while playing for the first time since Nov. 1 after dealing with a sprained right ankle.

Milwaukees Giannis Antetokounmpo missed a second straight game due to an adductor strain.

The Pistons are one victory away from matching the longest winning streak in franchise history. Detroit won 13 straight games in 1989-90 and 2003-04, and the Pistons went on to win the NBA title both seasons.

Detroit also ended a 13-game skid in this series by beating the Bucks for the first time since a 115-106 triumph at Milwaukee on Jan. 3, 2022. That had been tied for the second-longest active win streak by any one team against another.

The longest such active streak is owned by the Los Angeles Clippers, who beat the Charlotte Hornets for a 15th straight time Saturday as James Harden scored 55 points in a 131-116 game.

Detroit coach J.B. Bickerstaff said during his pregame availability that Cunningham had brought up the Pistons lack of success against the Bucks to the rest of the team earlier in the day.

Jalen Duren had 19 points and Duncan Robinson 15 for Detroit, which shot 53.3% (16 of 30) from 3-point range and 62.8% (49 of 78) overall. Ryan Rollins had 24 and Bobby Portis added 18 for Milwaukee.

The Bucks have lost four straight to drop below .500 for the first time this season.

Detroit pulled ahead for good in the second quarter and led by as many as 29.

Israel says it killed a senior Hezbollah official in first strike on Beirut in months

23 November 2025 at 13:31

Israel on Sunday struck Lebanons capital for the first time since June, saying it killed Hezbollahs chief of staff Haytham Tabtabai and warning the Iran-backed militant group not to rearm and rebuild a year after their latest war.

The strike in Beiruts southern suburbs killed five people and wounded 25 others, Lebanons Health Ministry said.

Hezbollah did not immediately comment. Earlier, it said the strike, launched almost exactly a year after a ceasefire ended that Israel-Hezbollah war, threatened an escalation of attacks just days before Pope Leo XIV is scheduled to visit Lebanon on his first foreign trip.

We will continue to act forcefully to prevent any threat to the residents of the north and the state of Israel, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said in a statement. Government spokesperson Shosh Bedrosian did not say whether Israel informed the U.S. before the strike, saying only that Israel makes decisions independently. Israel did not issue an evacuation warning.

RELATED STORY | Latest remains returned from Gaza are not bodies of hostages, Israel says

Tabtabai had led Hezbollahs elite Radwan Unit. Israel's military said he commanded most of Hezbollahs units and worked hard to restore them to readiness for war with Israel."

In 2016, the United States designated Tabtabai as a terrorist, calling him a military leader who led Hezbollahs special forces in Syria and Yemen, and it offered up to $5 million for information about him.

Tabtabai had been the apparent successor of Ibrahim Aqil, who was killed in September 2024 in Israeli attacks that wiped out much of Hezbollahs senior leadership, including longtime leader Hassan Nasrallah.

Escalation of assaults

Earlier, at the scene of Sunday's strike, Mahmoud Qamati, deputy chair of Hezbollahs political council, told journalists that a high-ranking militant may have been killed but did not give details.

Hezbollahs leadership is studying the matter of response and will take the appropriate decision, Qamati said. The strike on the southern suburbs today opens the door to an escalation of assaults all over Lebanon.

Israeli airstrikes over southern Lebanon have intensified in recent weeks while Israel and the United States have pressured Lebanon to disarm the powerful militant group. Israel asserts that Hezbollah is trying to rebuild its military capabilities in southern Lebanon. The Lebanese government, which has approved its militarys plan that would disarm Hezbollah, has denied those claims.

Lebanons President Joseph Aoun in a statement condemned Sunday's strike and accused Israel of refusing to implement its end of the ceasefire agreement. He called on the international community to intervene with strength and seriousness to stop the attacks on Lebanon and its people.

Israel's military statement said Israel remains committed to the understandings agreed upon by Israel and Lebanon.

Smoke could be seen in the busy Haret Hreik neighborhood. A video circulated on social media showed dozens of people crowded around the area of the strike, which appeared to be on the fourth floor of an apartment building. Gunshots could be heard to disperse crowds as emergency workers arrived.

This is definitely a civilian area and void of any military presence, especially the neighborhood where we stand, Hezbollah parliamentarian Ali Ammar told reporters near the site.

RELATED STORY | UN approves US plan authorizing an international stabilization force in Gaza

An Israeli drone was flying near the building targeted. The Lebanese military cordoned off the area, the state-run National News Agency reported.

They want to take our weapons. But our weapons will not be taken, said Maryam Assaf, who lives nearby and heard the strike. She said it "only gives us more determination, strength, and dignity.

Hezbollah severely weakened

Lebanon and United Nations peacekeepers have been critical of ongoing Israel attacks in the country and accuse Israel of violating the ceasefire agreement.

Aoun last week said the country is ready to enter negotiations with Israel to stop its airstrikes and to withdraw from five hilltop points it occupies on Lebanese territory. It was unclear if Israel would agree.

Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam say they are committed to disarming all non-state actors in the country, including Hezbollah.

The latest Israel-Hezbollah war began Oct. 8, 2023, a day after Hamas attacked southern Israel, as Hezbollah fired rockets into Israel in solidarity with Hamas. Israel launched a widespread bombardment of Lebanon last year that severely weakened Hezbollah, followed by a ground invasion.

That war was the most recent of several conflicts involving Hezbollah over the past four decades. It killed more than 4,000 people in Lebanon, including hundreds of civilians, and caused an estimated $11 billion worth of destruction, according to the World Bank. In Israel, 127 people died, including 80 soldiers.

On Tuesday, an Israeli strike killed 13 people in the Palestinian refugee camp of Ein el-Hilweh near the southern city of Sidon in the deadliest attack since the ceasefire went into effect. The military said it targeted a military facility belonging to the Palestinian Hamas militant group. Hamas denied it has any military facilities in the crowded camp.

Thanksgiving Travel Forecast: From wet and mild to cold and snowy

23 November 2025 at 13:26

The biggest travel week is upon us and the weather across Metro Detroit will range from mild and wet earlier in the week to cold and wintry to wrap up the holiday.

The first storm system will bring a chance for light-to-moderate rain showers across the area throughout the day Tuesday.  However, temperatures will remain on the mild side for late November with highs in the low 50s.

A second front will sweep through the area on Wednesday with another round of rain trying to scoot through Metro Detroit.  This time it will trigger strong winds and much colder weather with temperatures tumbling throughout the day.

Youll definitely need to bundle up on Thanksgiving!  The blast of frigid air settles in for the holiday and sticks around for the weekend.  Morning lows will start in the 20s and afternoon temperatures will only rise into the 30s.  There will be a biting wind chill in the teens and 20s.  This winter-like chill will ignite the lake-effect machine across the Great Lakes, including Metro Detroit.  If youre traveling across Michigan on Thanksgiving Day, youll need to watch for slick and snowy road conditions through the heavier snow belt areas, like northwest Lower Michigan, the U.P. and the southwest portions of Lower Michigan. It looks like we may catch a brief break from the snow across Metro Detroit on Friday, but the typical Michigan snow belts will likely see more lake effect to finish the week.

Well keep an eye on next weekend for another potential storm system moving through Lower Michigan.  Its still a bit far away but be on alert for a hit of wintry weather, which could lead to messy travel after Thanksgiving with snow developing next Saturday changing to a wintry mix to close out the weekend.

The Climate Prediction Center has consistently displayed an upcoming atmospheric pattern shift bringing this winter-like weather across Metro Detroit.Again, the initial taste of arctic air filtering in midweek and maintaining its cold grip on the region into, at least, early December.

The building, formerly known as the Dexter-Elmhurst Community Center, was renamed to honor Helen Moore, a longtime Detroit activist who has spent six decades fighting to improve education for Black children in the city.

"I'm so happy that it's completed and I will be here quite often," Moore said.

Moore also led the fight to reopen the community center on Dexter Avenue after it closed in 2019.

"It was totally empty in there, there were all kinds of violations, that's why we lost the center but it wasn't done by us, it was done by the people who owned the center and they kept changing ownership," Moore said.

The city took over ownership of the building and completed much-needed renovations before the official reopening. Moore was present as officials cut the ribbon to the community center that now bears her name.

"It gives me a lot of joy to know that we are going to continue what we started and that our people will have a beautiful place to come to with their families," Moore said.

The renovated facility includes a gym, computer lab, STEM and art rooms. Outside the community center, a brand new park was named after Ed Davis, the first African American new car dealership owner in the United States.

"It's like a dream come true, it really is," said Detroit City Council member Fred Durhal III.

Durhal grew up attending the community center. His father, Fred Durhal Jr., a former Michigan state representative, advocated for the center. Durhal Jr. died earlier this week.

"I know he is smiling today because Dexter is a little bit brighter," Durhal said.

Meanwhile Helen Moore emphasized the community center's importance to the neighborhood and expressed joy that residents can enjoy it once again.

"We had children they came in here that didn't have water in their buildings and some of their houses even had holes in the roof, this was home to them and we made sure that they knew they were welcomed here," Moore said.

62 years after JFK's assassination, the limo he was in is on display at The Henry Ford

22 November 2025 at 22:53

Wednesday marks the 60th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. It happened in Dallas on Nov. 22, 1963, and the limo he was riding in at the time is on display in metro Detroit.

That limo is part of the "Presidential Vehicles" exhibit at The Henry Ford in Dearborn, which also includes limos from Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry Truman, Dwight D. Eisenhower and more.

According to The Henry Ford, the 1961 Lincoln Continental Presidential Limousine was called X-100 by the Secret Service. It was assembled by Ford Motor Company at its Lincoln plant in Wixom in January 1961 and was customized in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The Secret Service leased the car from Ford Motor Company for $500 per year, and some of its special features included removable steel and transparent plastic roof panels, two steps on the rear bumper, four retractable steps for agents, a rear seat to elevate the president and more.

Kennedy was sitting in the back right seat of the limo when it went through Dallas with the roof off when the shooting happened around 12:30 p.m. central time. He was hit in the neck and the head and was pronounced dead shortly after.

According to The Henry Ford, the X-100 was impounded for evidence in the weeks after the assassination and then plans were made to modify the car in Cincinnati.

The White House approved a plan to revamp the car in December 1963 and work was completed in May of 1964 with the help of a committee of six people representing the Secret Service and more.

The car was then put through testing in Cincinnati and Dearborn before it was delivered to The White House, according to The Henry Ford.

Once again, the X-100 went through major modifications in 1967, and went on to be used occasionally through the Carter administration.

The Henry Ford said it remained in service until early 1977 when it was returned to Ford after its lease and then went on display at The Henry Ford.

The Thanksgiving morning event that’s quietly taking over America

22 November 2025 at 20:50

Turkey trots are a popular way for novice and experienced runners to burn a few calories before sitting down at the Thanksgiving dinner table and theyre growing in popularity.

According to RunSignup, more than 1.1 million people participated in a turkey trot last Thanksgiving at one of over 936 races across the United States. The number of people who registered through RunSignup has nearly quadrupled over the past eight years.

In 2023, 920,000 participants used RunSignup to sign up for a Thanksgiving Day race, though the actual number was higher because some races use other registration platforms.

While some turkey trots welcomed just a few dozen runners, RunSignup noted that 322 races on Thanksgiving last year had at least 1,000 participants, up from 249 the year before.

These races happen nationwide all 50 states had at least one Thanksgiving Day event, with Florida leading the way at 56.

The vast majority of races (91.6%) offered a 5K (3.11 miles) distance. Fewer included one-mile, 10K and half marathon options.

Beyond fitness, turkey trots raise significant funds for charity. RunSignup said turkey trot registrations it managed in 2024 raised more than $3.6 million for various causes.

Expert tips for running a turkey trot

With so many runners hitting the starting line, these races can be a good introduction to running for beginners. If youre signed up for a race, here are tips from Cleveland Clinic exercise physiologist Katie Lawton:

Pick a manageable distance. Turkey trots range from one mile to a half marathon, but Lawton says a 5K is often best for beginners. Train ahead of time. Even with race day close, try to log a few miles beforehand. Run with a group. Invite friends or family to join for added fun. Wear comfortable shoes. Any athletic shoe works for a one-time 5K, but if you plan to keep training, invest in running or walking shoes. Specialty stores can help find the right fit. Dress for the weather. Layer clothing so you can remove pieces as you warm up. Hydrate. Drink water before and after the race, especially if you sweated or drank alcohol the night before. Pace yourself. Slower runners should start toward the back of the pack to give faster runners a clear path. Cool down and refuel. Keep moving after the race and eat a light snack, such as a banana or granola bar.

First human death reported from rare H5N5 bird flu in Washington

22 November 2025 at 20:28

A Washington state resident is believed to be the first person to die from a rare strain of bird flu, but state health officials said Friday the risk to the public is low.

The person, an older adult with underlying health conditions, was being treated for a bird flu called H5N5 after becoming seemingly the first known human infected by the strain, according to a statement from the Washington State Department of Health.

The person from Grays Harbor County, about 78 miles southwest of Seattle, had a backyard flock of domestic poultry that had been exposed to wild birds, health officials said.

The risk to the public remains low," the statement from state health officials said. No other people involved have tested positive for avian influenza.

Health officials said they will monitor anyone who came in close contact with the person, but there is no evidence of transmission of this virus between people."

Earlier this month, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a statement about the infection that said no information would suggest the risk to public health has increased as a result of this case.

H5N5 is not believed to be a greater threat to human health than the H5N1 virus behind a wave of 70 reported human infections in the U.S. in 2024 and 2025. Most of those have been mild illnesses in workers on dairy and poultry farms.

The distinction between H5N5 and H5N1 lies in a protein involved in releasing the virus from an infected cell and promoting spread to surrounding cells.

Senators say Trump’s Ukraine peace plan risks ceding territory to Russia

22 November 2025 at 19:51

A bipartisan group of senators echoed concerns over a peace deal pitched by President Donald Trump to end the war between Ukraine and Russia.

Five senators three Democrats, a Republican and an independent released a statement saying they share significant concerns about the peace deal. Sens. Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H.; Thom Tillis, R-N.C.; Peter Welch, D-Vt.; Chris Coons, D-Del.; and Angus King, I-Maine, gave the joint statement.

We share significant concerns over the details of the reported peace plan that has been released, the senators said. For over 10 years, Russia has illegally occupied Ukrainian territory and for almost four years, Ukraine has admirably defended itself against Russias attempts to fully occupy Ukraine. No one wants a just and lasting peace more than the Ukrainian people.

However, we will not achieve that lasting peace by offering Putin concession after concession and fatally degrading Ukraines ability to defend itself.

Trump has given Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy until Thursday to accept the deal.

Zelenskyy said Ukraine risks losing its dignity and the support of the United States as a key international ally if it signs the agreement.

Circulated points of the plan, which have not been independently confirmed by Scripps News, indicate Ukraine would be called on to give up some eastern territory, including the Donbas, and areas it currently controls. It would be required to cap its military size and forgo seeking NATO membership, instead relying on security guarantees from the U.S.

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin said the agreement could represent the basis for a peace deal but denied that Russia had substantive talks ongoing.

Trump briefly discussed the plan on Saturday.

Wed like to get to peace. It should have happened a long time ago. The Ukraine war with Russia should have never happened. If I were president, it never would have happened. Were trying to get it ended one way or the other. We have to get it, he said.

But the group of senators suggested the cost of ending the war might be too high.

History teaches us that Putin only understands strength and will not abide by any agreement unless it is backed by force. We must consult closely with our Ukrainian and NATO partners on the path forward, they said. We should put real pressure on Russia to come to the negotiating table. And we must make clear to the Kremlin and would-be aggressors in Beijing that America will stand unwaveringly in defense of freedom.

In the meantime, Zelenskyy met with several key allies Saturday at the G20 conference, which Trump did not attend.

European Union President Ursula von der Leyen expressed concerns over aspects of the deal, saying it would need additional work.

We are ready to engage in order to ensure that a future peace is sustainable. We are clear on the principle that borders must not be changed by force, she said. We are also concerned by the proposed limitations on Ukraines armed forces, which would leave Ukraine vulnerable to future attack.

Cracker Barrel CEO survives push for ouster after logo controversy

22 November 2025 at 18:14

Cracker Barrel shareholders voted Thursday to keep company CEO Julie Felss Masino in place despite a debacle over the company's logo that continues to hurt its sales.

But one of the company's directors, Gilbert Davila, resigned from Cracker Barrel's board Thursday after preliminary results indicated that shareholders rejected his reelection.

Davila, who joined Cracker Barrel's board in 2020, is the president and CEO of DMI Consulting, a multicultural marketing firm. He reviewed Cracker Barrel's advertising as part of his role on the board. Two influential shareholder advisory firms, Institutional Shareholder Services and Glass Lewis, had recommended against Davila's reelection ahead of the vote.

Sardar Biglari, a longtime Cracker Barrel shareholder and activist investor, was among those pressing for the ouster of Masino and Davila. Biglari is the chairman and CEO of Biglari Holdings Inc., a San Antonio, Texas-based company that owns Steak n Shake. He also owns 3% of Cracker Barrels shares.

Our campaign is about saving Cracker Barrel from a board and management team that are out of touch with Cracker Barrels customer base, Biglari said in a letter sent earlier this month to Cracker Barrel investors.

In its own statement, Cracker Barrel thanked its shareholders and said it was committed to returning the company to sales growth.

We are more focused than ever on delivering high-quality food and experiences to our guests while staying true to the heritage that makes Cracker Barrel so special, ensuring we are here to welcome families around our table for generations to come, the company said.

Cracker Barrel's shares fell nearly 5.5% Thursday to close at $25.97 per share. They are down 52% from the start of this year.

Cracker Barrel hired Masino, a longtime Taco Bell and Starbucks executive, in July 2023. She was chosen for her record as an innovator, with the hope that she would attract new customers to Cracker Barrel, which operates 660 restaurants in 43 states.

Masino introduced updated menu items, like Hashbrown Casserole Shepherds Pie, to increase Cracker Barrels dinnertime traffic. She also started remodeling the companys dark, antique-filled restaurants, lightening the walls and installing more comfortable seating.

But her decision in August to simplify the chains logo had disastrous consequences. Fans didnt like that the new logo didnt include Cracker Barrels longtime mascot, an overall-clad man leaning on a barrel, or the words Old Country Store. They also rebelled against the store redesigns.

Cracker Barrel reversed course a week later, saying it would keep its old logo. In early September, the company also suspended the remodeling of its restaurants.

The moves could hurt Cracker Barrels sales well into next year. Cracker Barrel said in September that store traffic would likely be down between 7% and 8% in its fiscal first quarter and could decline 4% to 7% for the full 2026 fiscal year, which began Aug. 2.

NCAA does U-turn on plan letting college athletes bet on pro games

22 November 2025 at 16:06

After the NCAA voted to allow college athletes to wager on professional sports, Division I school leaders have decided to rescind the rule change.

The reversal follows a Justice Department investigation alleging that an active NBA player and coach were involved in an illegal sports and poker gambling scheme.

Last month, Division I leaders approved allowing athletes to bet on professional sports. Later, leaders of Division II and Division III schools voted in favor as well. While Divisions II and III typically consist of smaller universities whose athletes are less likely to turn professional, much of the talent in the four major U.S. pro sports leagues comes from Division I programs.

The rule change was set to take effect Nov. 1, but schools were given until Nov. 21 to rescind their approval.

After a procedural 30-day period, two-thirds of Division I member schools have voted to rescind a previously approved rule change that would have allowed student-athletes and athletics department staff members to legally participate in sports betting on professional sports only, the NCAA said Friday. Because sports betting rules are common legislation, the ban on all forms of betting for sports in which the NCAA sponsors a championship will remain in place for all three NCAA divisions.

An anonymous NCAA survey in 2024 found that, despite bylaws prohibiting it, 22% of male athletes and 5% of female athletes wagered on sports.

The NCAA has faced several gambling scandals in recent months. On Friday, the organization said a former Temple basketball player and two former staff members bet on professional and college sports. The former player, Hysier Miller, admitted to betting on his team and was accused of betting against Temple three times.

Earlier this week, the NCAA said more than one-third of Division I mens basketball players reported being harassed by bettors.
